The ‘Minery’ is a fully submerged, gravity fed winery located at Cal Poly Pomona. The parti consists of 4 intersecting, skewed bars housing either public or private program. The program, excavated into the existing hill, appears to grow out of the ground and extend towards the vineyards and the city. The circulation follows the movement of the bars down into the central atrium, which opens up into a water feature further pulling attention into the depths of the earth. The structure consists of precast panels designed to mimic the natural undulations of the ground, which serve as retaining walls.

“Puzzled education” is an elementary school derived from the concept of a children’s puzzle called ‘the knot.’ The interlocking and shifting bars house the primary program of classrooms, and the deconstruction of the parti results in a central atrium space dedicated to an educational amphitheater framed by suspended walkways. The bars are sheltered by a solar panel canopy to protect the open air interior of the school.

‘Vand hus’ (water house in Danish) is a bath house located next to the Copenhagen lakes. The project features an underground network of baths and saunas that peak up above ground to receive unique qualities of filtered natural light. The ‘Vand Hus’ creates a gradient between aqua scape and existing hard scape, essential serving as the threshold between the two worlds. By creating a walkable project bisected by the existing bike path, the visitors are encouraged to meander through the man-made water features or onto the bath house roof which appears to float on the lake.

Interlocking volumes used to establish massing. Overlapping spaces excavated to create large openings to outside, framed by folded planes. Units organized to maximize private land ownership by dividing up outside space into private yards. Central courtyard framed by surrounding units establishes a communal gathering space to serve as a public node.

According to the EPA, cars and trucks are the number one recycled product in America. Approximately 8 million cars and 5 million trucks are recycled every year, with California registering more than any other state with a total of 12-15 million vehicles entering US salvage yards annually. The need for salvage yards continues to increase as the consumer desire for the vehicle maintains a steady rise. The ‘junkyard,’ an under-theorized category within recent architectural culture, serves as a monument to the inherent human desire of consumption. The eye catching signage endorsing a myriad of auto plazas along the vast network freeways consequently results in a surplus unwanted and totaled vehicles that require relocating. The acres of gleaming metal and affordable classic parts offered by junkyards are often unrecognized for their true potential of profit and instead mistaken as mass quantities of useless junk as a result of the developing world. The mechanical aspect of the dehumanized salvage yard will be transformed into an industrialized shopping center, creating a new relationship between the monotonous warehouse / junk landforms and the consumer. This reinvention of the ‘junkyard’ will solidify the need for the recognition of debris in the modern city as a “type of human-produced context – an antinature,” while simultaneously providing a solution to the problem of the overproduction of vehicles in a consumer based society.
