Principal’s message: Hi everyone, Certainly COVId-19 (Corona Virus) is dominating headlines and public debate at the moment. It is important that we share accurate and up to date information, which is of course challenging as the situation evolves rapidly. Our School website, Facebook page and the NSW Schools Update App contains the most up to date and accurate information direct from the NSW Department of Education. I encourage you to use these resources. Later in the newsletter I have provided the most recent update I received Sunday night from Mr Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, for your information. My message to you is that we are following the plan that has been clearly communicated to us and developed in consultation with health experts at the highest level. As a school, we have an important role to play in sharing information and protecting our most vulnerable citizens. As such we will be taking some proactive and sensible actions in line with NSW DoE directives. They include:

- Additional hygiene and hand washing procedures

- Sending home students or staff who present as unwell

- Increasing ventilation in the classroom - ‘Social distancing’ measures as sensibly

prescribed by the NSW DoE including the postponement of all excursions and sporting events involving other schools until further notice.

This means that our planned 3MAPS and LDPSSA Cross Countries, along with all planned assemblies (including our Easter Hat parade) are postponed until further notice. I know this may cause some disappointment for students and families but I urge us to focus on the big picture. This is a temporary measure, designed to cause certainty for schools across the state and ‘flatten the curve’ of infection rates, thus protecting our most vulnerable. I will be speaking with students about these measures and I would expect that some may be feeling a little anxious given the media coverage and quite vocal public debate. My aim is to reassure everyone that we are doing all that we reasonably can and will absolutely follow the advice of the experts. As a principal I feel very well supported with information and a considered, sensible plan.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at school. Now back to learning. Thanks,

Nicole Menzies

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Fantastic session on Friday!

Kitchen students made delicious food with our harvest of thyme, basil, eggplants, zucchinis, parsley and tarragon this week!

We enjoyed Flatbread, with hummus prepared by Harry and Mark and a Frittata of the Imagination.

Gardeners completed Wheelbarrow Licences with Ms. Fulford. Top work Tyler, Shayla, Andie, Maya, Elizabeth, Odette and Javier.

We also got busy with pH testing specific areas of the garden, and then getting on with garden maintenance. There were weeds to pull.

We researched a little about dragon fruit – that’s Andie planting one - and also asked when do we harvest the pineapple? Apparently next gardening session – researched by Tyler! The dragon fruit requires a pole to sort of “hang onto” ….we are getting this organised ASAP. Things have got a bit wild and woolly in the garden, with the magnificent rain. Lots to do, but we are getting there.

Next Kitchen Garden is on Friday 3rd April. Mrs E

HANNAM VALE PUBLIC SCHOOL – EXCELLENCE & OPPORTUNITY

Information from Mark Scott AO, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education As you are aware the World Health Organisation has declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The situation in regard to COVID-19 continues to evolve with an increasing number of countries having sustained community transmission. In Australia the majority of COVID-19 cases are returning travellers or close contacts of cases, but there is evidence of limited community transmission in some states including NSW. There have also been some temporary school closures across the state where suspected cases of COVI-19 have been identified. The department has been planning and operating in accordance with its pandemic plan to support the safety and wellbeing of staff and students. Efforts are now focused on considered actions to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community and protect those who are likely to experience more severe disease such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. These steps are also essential to reduce the demands on the health system so that it can function effectively. The department has been planning and operating in accordance with its pandemic plan to support the safety and wellbeing of staff and students. This is part of the government-wide strategy to ‘flatten the curve’ of confirmed cases so that our health services can meet the needs of those who require care when they need it. Schools have been provided with comprehensive advice on the actions to take to support that plan. The situation is evolving quickly and we will continue to respond to the advice from NSW Health as we receive it. I will be in touch regularly to keep you updated on our plan.

Three actions you can take to help manage the spread

1. Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly. 2. Sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, disposing of the tissue straight away and then washing your hands. 3. Stay home if you are unwell and in schools, send home staff or students who show signs of being unwell through the day.

Masks are not an effective measure in protecting staff or the community from the virus and therefore no member of staff should need to wear a mask in going about their normal duties. Schools have a vital role to play in reinforcing health messages with students and through their community. Schools will implement some proactive and sensible measures to protect our staff and communities while maintaining our essential services across early childhood, schools and further education. I know some have called for school closures and the matter is triggering significant public debate. This and other public health responses to COVID-19 are being considered daily in meetings between the Australia’s chief health officers, drawing on advice from the national leaders is epidemic management and from the experience with this and previous pandemics. Our strategy to date is working. NSW Education is in discussion with NSW Health throughout every day. At this point, case numbers and transmission of the virus in NSW remains low compared to other countries. Our strategy to date is working. If or when school closures become the best way to manage the spread of the virus in NSW, then we are ready to do so. In the meantime, our schools provide an essential service that enable our healthcare and other essential workers to fulfil their roles. I want to thank you – particularly those of you working in schools – for your strength and leadership in working through these most challenging of times. As we all know, things are moving quickly. The department is working closely with NSW Health to ensure we have access to the latest advice on how to keep our staff, our students and community safe. We are following their guidance
