FROM THE VERBAND
Hanoverian Auction in Iran
Pilot project turns out to be great success The first Hanoverian auction in Iran was held Thursday evening, December 11, near Teheran. The Hannoveraner Verband was the organizer of the auction in co-operation with a partner - the first sales event was already a great success. Ali Hojabr, official representative of the Hannoveraner Verband in Iran, hosted the auction at his spacious equestrian facilities. Such an event has been unknown so far in Iran, and it thus generated a great deal of interest nationwide. Aim of the project was to sell Hanoverian horses at a Hanoverian auction in a different cultural environment. Besides this innovative approach, the event was also meant to serve as marketing measure to make the Hanoverian brand more
popular in Iran. The people in Iran have a great passion for equitation. Breeding and Business Manager Dr. Werner Schade has been preparing this project together with the partners since May this year. 16 horses have been particularly chosen at the Verden auctions that were brilliantly presented by the
Verden auction team under the supervision of Joerg-Wilhelm Wegener. The audience was impressed by the performances and rewarded the riders with repeated spontaneous applause. There was a brilliant atmosphere in the amazingly prepared riding arena. The six dressage and eleven show jumping horses were sold at averagely Euro 50,000. Well-known and renowned training and show stables from all over the country purchased the futurity prospects. As this was a very successful start, it is scheduled to continue the co-operation in 2015.
Merger between Rhenish and Hanoverian
Studbook
Huge majority of delegates to seal the fusion After an overwhelming majority of members of
Rheinisches Pferdestammbuch already voted in
favour of the merger, the delegates of the
Hannoveraner Verband met today, Monday,
December 8, in Verden, to cast their vote. 82
percent decided in favour of the merger, thus
filling the future-oriented project with life.
Theo Leuchten commented on the decided
merger as follows: "This is a special day that will
certainly go down in the history books of the
German horse breed. Our two studbooks have a
rich tradition and have now set new priorities that
underline that structural change of modern times
have been identified and that they are willing to
shape the future together."
The merger between Rheinisches
Pferdestammbuch and Hannoveraner Verband
will become effective as of January 1, 2015.
The Next Auction at Verden..
The Verden Auction will be held in the
Niedersachsenhalle in Verden on January 24. The
Auction of Sport Horses will start on Saturday,
January 24, in time at 3.00 pm.

Member profile: Mary Mumford and Roundhay Dream Saskia
Article by Judy Smith
Mary grew up on a dairy farm in Berwick, always
pestering her mum and dad for a horse. Finally
she was given a pony in grade 6.
Mary’s parents opened a bookshop where Mary
worked after finishing school. During this time
she also became involved in book publishing and
this interest continues.
As a teenager Mary started to breed Arab horses.
The farm was owed a stud fee and, in lieu of
payment for the fee, Mary received an anglo arab
colt…..Musteer. Musteer remained with Mary for
35 years….that says a lot for her horsemanship as
well as his longevity!
Mary’s long term ambition was to own a horse
property whilst Musteer was alive. Ten years ago
Mary met Geoff…who was not ‘horsey’ but he
became involved in Mary’s passion for horses.
Geoff has a particular fondness for the mares,
and is supportive of Mary’s breeding pursuits.
Geoff and Mary subsequently bought Hollingrove
Stud at Longwarry. Initially they started with a
boutique agistment business for mares and young
stock. Two lovely Thoroughbred mares came on
agistment and after seeing their progeny Mary
was impressed and organised the purchase of
them. After much research Don Ricoss was
selected as a good sire for these mares. The
selection criteria was to have a proven dam line
as well as sire line so with Don Ricoss’s Granddam
a state premium mare, Arena 1 by Eiger 1 out of
the German Showjumping ‘E’ line it seemed a
good fit. So commenced Mary and Geoff’s
association with the Hanoverian society of
Australia.
Two fillies were bred from frozen semen
unfortunately the first filly was injured and was
not suitable for competition. The second filly now
rising 7 years old, is Roundhay Dream Saskia.
A dark black bay mare with a good top line and
impressive elastic paces. ‘Cassie’ as she is known,
completed her mare performance test as a 4yo with
only four weeks under saddle. She was also shown
at the Summer Royal as a 2yo and won the 2/3 year
class.
As a 5 to 7 year old Cassie has been campaigned
successfully by Anthea Wood. Her most recent
achievements include Reserve Champion Level 1 at
the HRCAV Top Team Trophy event and best
performed Hanoverian at the competition. Her final
competition will be at the upcoming Dressage
Festival where she will compete in the Novice and
Elementary classes.
Cassie will then have a spell from competition as
Mary would like her to have a foal and is hoping to
breed to Londonderry in 2015.

What happens when the horse you have bred or
own is unable to fulfil your expectations of being
next national dressage or show jumping champion?
For many reasons we often find that the horse is
either unsuitable or no longer able to perform in
the area we have chosen for it. For mares there is
often the option to consider a breeding program,
however that is not the option for geldings and
finding a productive life for them when
circumstances change can be more challenging.
So here is a story of one such horse.
Wilara Gunnedah ( Gymnastic Star /
Winterkornig/Daktulus) is Sharon Armstrong’s
much loved twelve year old gelding. He was a
successful dressage horse but as the expectations
increased it became apparent that the dressage
arena was not for him long term. So what to do
with a fit capable horse? He is now learning to be a
carriage horse of course. He will travel to Tasmania
shortly and become part of a team that will take
visitors around historic Battery Point. He will also be
available for weddings and private bookings.
With his beauty and movement Sharon expects that
his services will be in big demand. Here he is
competing at the Sale Show in Victoria after having
been with his trainer for a week. Wilara Gunedah
went on to win his class and then receive Reserve
Champion at the show.
We wish Sharon and Wilara Gunedah the best of
luck in their new direction.
When is a dressage horse really a carriage horse?
elcome to the story of the
Hanoverian horse. Few people realise that this
noble breed of horse has one of the longest
traceable genetic lineages in the equine world,
the story behind this being just as interesting as
the understanding of the modern Hanoverian
horse today.
Origin of the breed The story starts in 1684 with the birth of one of the three founding stallions of both the Thoroughbred and subsequent Hanoverian breed of horses. At the Battle of Buda (1686) in Hungary, a feisty dark bay stallion was captured by Captain Robert Byerley. The horse was to become Captain Byerley’s war horse and, after the European conflict, was transported to Ireland in 1689 to further serve with his master at the Battle of the Boyne before commencing his stud duties. This strikingly handsome and refined horse was to be known as ‘The Byerley Turk’. Prior to the death of The Byerley Turk, the next influential stallion was born. This stallion, known as the Darley Arabian, was bought in Aleppo, Syria, by Thomas Darley in 1704 and transported back to England. At only 15 hh, he was a small horse, but had an elegant refinement which was not yet present in the English and European horses. By 1722, this stallion was to be considered the leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland and, today, it is estimated that 95% of the modern Thoroughbreds can trace back to this single stallion. The last of the founding stallions was born in Yemen in 1724 and gifted to Louis XV of France in 1730. His potential as a breeding stallion was not realised by the French Court, and so he was sold
w

to Mr Edward Coke and transported to Derbyshire in England. On Coke’s death, the horse was again sold - this time to the 2nd Earl of Godolphin who then kept him at stud in Cambridgeshire. As with the Darley Arabian, this stallion was only 15 hh, but had the distinguishing feature of an unnaturally high crest. His name, the Godolphin Barb, was thought to reflect not only the Earl who owned him, but also the horse’s country of origin, Tunisia, on the Barbary Coast. In Germany, the horse was traditionally used in agriculture as a work beast associated with pulling a plough or cart. The horse was heavy in frame, strong and robust, but with a willing and trainable temperament - a characteristic suitable for what it was bred to undertake. However, the development of modern warfare and the need for carriage transport for the general population provided the impetus to consider infusing the genetics of the three founding stallions with the heavier German horses to produce horses simultaneously suitable for agriculture, harness and cavalry mounts. In 1735, George II, King of England and Elector of Hanover, founded the State Stud at Celle with this express purpose. By 1844, a German law was passed that allowed only stallions that were passed by the inspection commission to be used for breeding purposes. This prompted the formation of a specific Hanoverian breed society in 1867 whose aim was to produce both coach and military horses. The Hanoverian was to become the most popular breed in Europe for coach and army work. The demand for Hanoverians declined after World War I with the focus shifting to the production of horses suitable for agriculture and riding. Further refinement of the genetic pool progressively produced the modern Hanoverian horse that we know today. The aim was to breed an elegant horse with a trainable temperament, a strong back, athletic movement and around 16-16.2 hh. Colour was unimportant. However, the modern Hanoverian does not include palomino or buckskin.
Advertising is one of the strongest
mediums through which the Hanoverian Breed can be promoted. The article written on behalf of the HHSA for the Horses & People Magazine offered breeders an opportunity to showcase and promote their horses and the breed. HHSA has now organised an excellent opportunity for interested breeders and members to promote their horse in The Horse Magazine on a monthly basis.
The Hanoverian of the Month is a ½ page colour promotion at a cost of $200. If you would like to showcase your horse you are asked to forward your proposed article and photo to [email protected]
Hollingrove Dazzler was November’s feature horse.
Supporting the Hanoverian breed in
Australia is another aspect of the marketing
strategy used by the HHSA. The Young Rider
Subsidy is aimed at enabling interested riders 25
years and under, who are members of the HHSA,
to receive financial support to attend HHSA
organised lessons/clinics.

Continued The subsidy is valued at $50 /lesson or $100/clinic. Thanks must go to Janette Lewis (president HHSA) and Kay Sutherland Director Gemini Equestrian & Livestock Services Pty Ltd who worked to get this initiative up and running.
Information sharing is another way to
engage and involve current and potential
members to the HHSA. Dedicated trade stands at
key equestrian events provide an onsite and face
to face opportunity to deliver and discuss benefits
of membership, breeder information and
rider/trainer opportunities.

endorsed. HHSA and Equistore offer members a
range of items that can be purchased. Please
order online at the HHSA website if you would like

Another great initiative from the HHSA is the
introduction of the International Foal Passport.
This is a terrific step forward in both promoting
and supporting the growth of Hanoverian horses

developed) condition. The aim is to improve
understanding of how such foals can be managed
during their early years to prevent later
development issues. Anyone responding to the
survey can ask to be kept informed of future
findings.
The Survey into Foal Development is being run by
Jane Clothier, a postgraduate student at CSIRO
and the University of New England. Jane, who has
been an equine body worker for ten years in
England and Australia, explains that little is
understood about managing premature foals for
the long term.
“While a lot is understood about managing the
neo-natal emergency that often accompanies a
premature birth, less is known about the
development problems that can follow. I am
interested in hearing about foaling issues, and will
be looking for case studies to assess in more
detail. By understanding development issues
more, I hope to contribute to management
strategies to assist the young horse, whether
relating to training, nutritional or therapeutic
measures. However, I can only do it with the help
of the people doing the hard work – the
breeders.”
This online survey is open to anyone who has bred
a foal in the past three years. It includes questions
on service and birth dates, pregnancy, foaling and
post-foaling issues, veterinary treatment and the
foal’s growth and development. It will take ten to
fifteen minutes to complete for a single foal, or 20
to 30 minutes for three foals. All responses will be
treated in confidence.
