ERIK BENSON is a Minneapolis based painter whose work deals with the poetics and politics of edge city landscapes. He employs a unique process of building his paintings through collage methods to create mimetic relationships between the visual information depicted and the processes of their making. He believes that painting

results from seeing thinking and making. He received his BFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has had numerous group shows and solo exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Benson was a 2016 McKnight Visual Artist Fellow.

FRIDAYNOVEMBER 9, AT 7:30 P.M.

Within from Without is an ongoing collaboration between abstract oil painter Mieko Yamazaki and pho-tographer Jack Mader. Their collaboration grew from meetings, conversations and mutual appreciation of each other’s work. The title for the collaboration “Within from Without” was derived from those discussions and conver-sations about their respective art and mediums.

Mieko, being an ab-stract painter, experiences and visualizes her imagery from within and through her unique painting technique brings that vision to fruition. Jack, being a photographer, is stimulated from without,

and brings the outside world back into himself to create his work.

Each has a different experience and expresses that experience in a different way by tapping into their creative reservoirs stimulated by nature, music, movement, sound, surfaces, feelings and the senses, sinking into heart and mind. Words dilute the experience narrowing things down and diminishing pos-sibility.

Often the more one talks about their art, the less one says. Each piece of art is open to interpretation and each viewer has his or her own experience when viewing the work.

In 2018, Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts provided a dynamic Student Art Exhibition featuring more than 550 student’s artwork and dis- a- re- the culminating exhibition of BLCA Artist in Resident, Greg Lecker. We have also welcomed Sarah Ratermann Beahan as our new Writer in Resident and Susan Gangsei as our new Artist in Resident.

Also, the Art at Rice Creek festival in September engaged community members in their creativity and BLCA also provided a space for area writers to express their literary voices through our monthly Reading Series.

As you can see, BLCA has made great strides in supporting artists and writers, being a resource for your creative voice, and promoting the arts to strengthen our community. We can meet our mission of being a wellspring for the community providing inspiration, enrichment, enjoyment, and education opportunities through the arts with your generous contributions.

I, along with the Board of Directors, thank members like you for your continued support.

For 2019, BLCA recognizes the opportunity to develop a community outreach program. Many families do not have extra funds in the budget to have their children take

art classes or have reliable transportation to the art center. We recognized this challenge because 30% of the attendees of our Kid’s Art Camp this summer did so through a scholarship.

The first phase of developing our outreach program will help children incorporate creativity into their lives. By offering literary and visual art opportunities free of charge and in more accessible locations, BLCA can do this. However, to engage in this opportunity, we need to ensure we have adequate funding to achieve this and our regular programming.

I ask for your generous support to keep our programming strong and to engage in these new opportunities.

Please, return your enclosed envelope today to ensure Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts continues to build active communities through the arts.

With gratitude,

Jeffrey EbelingExecutive Director
