Warm weather is finally here! As the schools get ready for summer vacation, the Library is gearing up for its busiest season. We have great things in store for patrons of all ages this summer… exciting programs, outdoor concerts, reading incentives and fun prizes.

The theme for this year is “Dig into Reading,” and the fun begins on

June 17. All branches will feature performances involving puppets, comedy, science and magic. In addition, a select number of libraries throughout the county will host a program on the Native American Code Talkers for ‘tweens and teens.

Our popular outdoor concerts are scheduled at the Broadneck, Brooklyn Park and Crofton branch libraries for the week of July 1, and who better to Dig into Reading than the Rocknoceros trio?

Turn to page 14 for a chance to win tickets to see the Orioles play at Camden Yards later this summer and mark your calendars for August 17 when kids can march on the field during a Bowie Baysox game. Also in August, the Library will host computer trainings, trivia nights, end of summer celebrations and back-to-school programs.

I am proud of the important role that the Anne Arundel County Public Library plays in providing opportunities for education and enrichment year-round. Keeping an interest in reading alive during the summer months, especially for our younger patrons, is an important goal of the Library. So while we encourage you to partake of our programs and activities, this summer, don’t forget to check out a book on your way out!

Happy Reading!

Some animals live underground for all or much of the time. Search the library for photos of these burrowing animals. Using the pictures in the library and the clues below, write the animals’ names in the boxes. Transfer the golden letter to the corresponding numbered blanks to spell out the secret message.

a note to Parents:Studies show that children who read over the summer maintain the reading skills developed during the school year. The Library’s Summer Reading Club is designed to encourage children to read more so they retain and even improve their academic skills. Here are a few simple ways to encourage your child’s success. • Let your child see you reading.• Re-reading stories can heighten a child’s literacy. Also,

reading several books of different genres at once is a part of a child’s discovery process.

• When in doubt, ask a librarian for help finding age-appropriate literature for your child.

• Make reading enjoyable – the goal is to foster a love of reading!

• Talk about the books you’re reading and make sure to visit the library for a steady supply of new reading material – and attend our fun Summer programs.

Library Happenings! June • July • August 2013 98 Anne Arundel County Public Library

My old hometown library in Garden City, Long Island, was small but very strict. Children 12 and under were forbidden to take “adult” books out, and in fact were not even allowed to browse in the grown-up stacks.

My problem was that I liked to read. A lot. As I approached my twelfth birthday, I was already reading on the adult level and kids’ books just bored me.

One day after school I was visiting a friend in Hempstead, the town next to Garden City. Hempstead was the home of the county’s main library, of which my hometown library was just a branch.

Hesitantly, I went into that imposing library to look for books. I was afraid the librarians there would either throw me out or order me to stay in the children’s section. But that’s not at all what happened.

The women behind the circulation desk couldn’t have cared less about me. They were busy stamping date-due slips and chatting. I was free to wander, search and – most importantly – invade the Inner Sanctum of adult volumes.

The gigantic (to me) library was like a Disney World for bookworms. My eyes widened with greedy wonder as I roamed through stacks full of U.S. and world history, art, sociology, economics, law, religion, biographies, fiction and a whole lot of subjects I’d never heard of.

The librarians may have permitted me to look around, but I was pretty sure they weren’t going to let me go home with any of these fascinating books. No, sir. So I did what any desperate and morally defective kid would do – I stole six selected books and stashed them in my schoolbag. I went home and read them, rationalizing my theft by intending to return them somehow.

In due course I brought the books to my home-town library and boldly placed them on the return desk. Then I not so boldly tried to run out the door.

I was caught and brought before the head librarian. I wondered if there was a death penalty for what I had done.

She looked down at me (my head was barely above the counter), then she looked through the thick volumes I had filched.

“I guess maybe we should let you into the adult stacks from now on,” she said with a sigh. Then she smiled. I supposed she knew I would continue my criminal career unless they gave me a grown-up library card.

And so they did. And I still love them for it.

I am often asked, “What do you think is the future of libraries?” Some people believe that, with the world gone digital, books as we know them will soon cease to exist. We all know that the music industry suffers from the impact of digital file sharing and the newspaper industry is struggling to stay relevant in a time when news is shared instantaneously via social media. The publishing industry also is endeavoring to create a new model, balancing print and eBook income to authors, publishers’ revenue and pricing to readers and libraries.

Against this backdrop, is the sky falling for libraries? Au contraire! Consider why localities have libraries in the first place.

By pooling the purchasing power of taxpayers to buy more books than any individual could afford on his or her own, libraries extend the educational attainment and lifelong learning of whole communities.

Many library users get huge bargains out of their local libraries, especially here in Maryland, where any resident can borrow and return books, CDs and DVDs to and from any branch library in any county or the city of Baltimore.

Beyond that, public libraries are true community centers. Families visit libraries, as do friends and neighbors, either to browse for books, to attend programs, to access services, or to gather as a group in public meeting rooms. Couples have even been known to have dates at libraries! Libraries do everything possible to fulfill the educational, cultural, informational and recreational needs and aspirations of the people who make up their communities.

With great new libraries opening throughout Maryland over the past decade, including those in Crofton and Odenton (the West County Area Library), and with more modern facilities in our plans, the concept behind public libraries is still germane and the future still bright.
