The Essential New York Times Cookbook: Classic Recipes for a New Century |by Amanda Hesser

Why attend? Because you love to read, cook and bake!

Tuesday, January 18th, 7:00 p.m. Amanda Hesser spent six years cooking her way through the New York Times’ recipe archive—the world’s most extensive collection, with recipes going

back more than 150 years—to create a cook-book unlike any other. In The Essential New

York Times Cookbook Hesser highlights more than 1,000 of the paper’s best recipes: the book includes dishes from some of our most beloved cooks, includ-ing Maida Heatter, Nigella Lawson, Eric

Ripert, Rose Levy Beranbaum, Julia Child, Mark Bittman, Marcella Hazan, David Chang and Jamie Oliver. This is the book every cook has been waiting for: a painstakingly researched, entertainingly written, and unfailingly lively compendium that gathers up both modern and classic recipes. The book is organized into eighteen chap-ters, including drinks, hors d’oeuvres, soups, vegetables, pasta, fish and shellfish, poultry and game, beef, breads and desserts. There are timelines that launch every chapter, serving

suggestions with most of the recipes, and full menus for more than fifty occasions, such as Super Bowl Sunday and dinner out on the patio, as well as sparkling essays and headnotes that place each recipe in a fuller context—and cooking tips that tell you everything from how to roll out pie dough (chill it first) to how to turn meatballs (use an icing spatula) to how to bring out the best flavor in stews (cook them a day in advance). In short, The Essential New York Times Cook-book is a cookbook for loyal fans of the Times Dining section, first-time home cooks looking for a single volume of reliable recipes, and food lovers eager to uncover the surprises of America’s culinary past. It is a must-have addition to every cookbook library. Books will be for sale.$34 plus tax and service charge per member (includes snacks and one beverage per person) and $49 plus tax and service charge per guest by January 11th at noon. $44 plus tax and service charge per member and $59 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reservations.

In the days immediately following Thanksgiving, the Penn Club magically transforms as we roll out all of the trim-mings of the Holiday Season. As the years have advanced and the Club has matured, the festive excitement of this grand time has grown in the hearts of our members, guests and staff. The Clubhouse comes alive with activities where old friendships are rekindled, new acquaintances are made, families are reunited and a general feeling of peace and happiness is infused into our lives. There is a level of refresh-ment that comes upon us at this time of year, and we hope it will carry forward into the coming year.It is at this unique time of year that the Penn Club becomes a focal point in the lives of so many of our members. Holiday shoppers come in to rest their weary feet by the fireplace, busy office workers congregate to wish each other good cheer, members and their guests partake of our members’ holiday Party and smiles are abound. Whatever your plans are for this Holiday Season, I encourage you to make the Penn Club a part of them. If those plans include a social, business or family gathering in one of our banquet spaces, I would like to urge you to make your reservations as soon as possible. These areas are heavily used during this special time of year, and we do not want to disappoint anyone.By now, you have all received an invitation to contribute to our Penn Club Employees’ Holiday Fund. Your generous support has allowed the Fund to grow larger each year, and I sincerely hope this year will be no exception. Your thoughtful generosity is deeply appreciated by all of the staff members who share in the Fund, and I personally

thank you for your kind consideration.Since this is a combined issue of HapPENNings, I would wish each and every one of you a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2011. Each New Year brings with it new hopes, opportunities and challenges, and I am sure this year will be no exception. With each of these shifts, please keep in mind that the Penn Club will always remain a constant refuge and a safe haven for you. You will always find a comforting environment within our walls. One of the traditions of a new year is the making of resolutions. As the clock slips into 2011 keep in mind that the Penn Club may very well be helpful in keeping your resolution. Whether is was a promise to reconnect with a lost friend or estranged family member, a decision to finally shed those few extra pounds, or thoughts of a job or career change, the Penn Club may well serve your purposes. In closing, I would like to extend a personal invitation to you to take part in an event that is near and dear to me — our Annual Robert Burns Dinner. This is one of those random thoughts that floated into my head several years ago, and it has grown into one of those traditions that just should not be missed. Our Burns Supper has become the epitome of good cheer, good fellowship, good food, good drink and good times. This year’s event will take place on Friday, Janu-ary 21, 2011. I do hope to see many of you there. My staff and I are excited to be a part of your life at the Penn Club. Its status as a Platinum Club of America is a source of great pride to all of us. We are eager to welcome you often to your home-away-from-home in New York.

Dushyant Pandit, Wharton Graduate ‘79 who currently resides in Summit, New Jersey, has been a member of the Penn Club since 2005. In addition to being a member of the Penn Club, Dushyant is active in both the Wharton Club of New York and New Jersey. He recently founded Dorchester Advisors, an investment management firm specializing in working with successful management consulting, financial services and pharmaceutical industry executives. Dushyant balances his professional life playing rock guitar, attending single malt tasting events, golfing, traveling and, of course, coming regularly to the Penn Club! He is currently writing a book to apply the “80/20” rule to learning and playing

the rock guitar, insights that will be particularly useful to other professionals who also pursue music as a hobby and must use their limited time effectively. You should ask him about it the next time you see him around the Club! Dushyant also applies his creativity to learning about and discussing new concepts in investing. The Penn Club and its intra clubs (like the Hedge fun Intra Club) allows him to engage with other members with similar interests. Whether he is lounging in the library discussing his passions over a cold beer or a single malt from the Kite and Key Bar or upstairs in the Business Center getting some work done, Dushyant is always greeted by the friendly staff of the Penn Club.
