Book Group LuncheonIn April, 1985 Penn alum Jennifer Egan won the Pulitzer Prize in Fic-tion for A Visit From the Goon Squad. Please join us over catered lunch for a reading and discussion of her work. Attendees of the luncheon are especially encouraged to “meet the author” on November 2nd.

A Visit from the Goon Squad |by Jennifer EganMonday, September 19th, 12 noon. Readers will be pleased to discover that the star-crossed marriage of lucid prose and expertly deployed postmodern switcheroos that helped shoot Egan to the top of the genre-bending new school is alive in well in

this graceful yet wild novel. We begin in contemporaryish New York with kleptomaniac Sasha and her boss, rising music producer Bennie Salazar, before ¤ ashing back, with Bennie, to the glory days of Bay Area punk rock, and eventually forward, with Sasha, to a settled life. Egan’s overarching concerns are about how rebellion ages, in¤ uence corrupts, habits turn to addictions, and lifelong friendships ¤ uctuate and turn. $49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest by Monday, September 12th at noon. $54 plus tax and service charge per member and $59 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reservations. There is an attendance minimum for this program to take place; early RSVPs are encouraged. No walk-ins. This program includes book discussion and full bu et luncheon with co ee/tea and dessert.

As summer draws to a close, it’s worth noting that the past few months have certainly proved interesting. From record-breaking heat to torrential storms — with a tornado or two thrown in to the latest nancial disruption — we have certainly faced some very out of the ordinary moments. Through all of it, your Club has continued to be a place of comfort and retreat.

With the start of the new academic year at Penn, the Penn Club also begins a new year of activities and programs. I do hope you all found time to enjoy the summer months, and I want to welcome you back to our great Club and its many o erings.

Over the summer months, we performed our annual clean-ing and maintenance programs. All areas of the Clubhouse have been thoroughly cleaned, furnishings have been inspected and repaired or replaced where necessary, and nishes and details have been touched up throughout the building. In short, we are well prepared for another year in the active life of our Club.

The Club ended its scal year on June 30th; and I am pleased to report that we were able to nish the 2010/2011

year in a modestly positive cash position. With the many challenges surrounding us, this is a noteworthy accomplish-ment. I’d like to thank the loyal and dedicated members of my team who made this feat possible, as well as recognize the tremendous support of our Club members.

We are still within our membership renewal process at this time. A signi cant number of our members have already re-newed their memberships for the 2011/2012 year. If you are among those few who put those dues bills aside while you enjoyed the pleasures of summer, I urge you to renew your membership at your earliest convenience. The Penn Club provides great value in terms of networking and services. This year will once again be lled with programs and events that will surely enhance your Penn Club experience.

My sta and I are excited to be a part of your Penn Club life. Its status as a Platinum Club of America is a source of great pride to us all. Your comfort, safety and enjoyment are of top importance to us. We are eager to welcome you often to your home-away-from-home in New York.

Featured Member Bene t!International Club Network (ICN): Additional Golf Club Privileges

Penn Club members have the opportunity to enhance the reciprocal club bene ts that you now receive from the Club. Because our club is a city club, we do not have many private golf and country clubs to reciprocate with due to the lack of parity in our club facilities. If you love to golf, this may be a useful bene t for you. In addition, our recip-rocal clubs in Asia are very strict about not allowing those who reside in Asia to utilize their club. With ICN, as long as you reside beyond a 200km radius from the club you wish to visit you may utilize their facilities. Joining ICN extends the reciprocal club network now available to you. Private clubs of all types, such as golf, country, racquet, athletic, yacht, and ski clubs are now open to you to make your business trips more productive and your vacations more enjoyable. ICN has more than 250 a« liated private clubs in 20 countries, and will contact private clubs on your behalf to make your reservation wherever you may go even if they are not listed as being a« liated with ICN, making this bene t virtually unlimited.Penn Club members save $100/year and the $500 initia-tion fee is waived. Penn Club members’ ICN fee is only $150 per year. If you were a member of a private club that is not a« liated with ICN, you would be required to pay a $500 initiation fee and $250 per year. Your spouse/domestic partner also becomes a member without ad-ditional cost (as long as s/he is also a Penn Club member) and enjoys all of the same advantages you do. You must be a current member in good standing to join and con-tinue to take advantage of this low rate.To learn more about this exciting bene t, visit the ICN web site. It gives you the latest information available about this bene t, including the current clubs in the portfolio and answers to frequently asked questions.

Penn Club members have access to over 150 reciprocal clubs worldwide. Two such examples are the reciprocal clubs below.

Royal Scots Club — Edinburgh, ScotlandSituated in one of Edinburgh’s nest Georgian streets, e Royal Scots Club o ers that rare combination: the charm of a country house hotel with a cozy club atmosphere. More per-sonal than a hotel, the clubhouse is a perfect home from home to relish the culture and

character of Scotland’s capital city. Founded in 1919 as a tribute to those who fell in e Great War, e Royal Scots Club is proud of its heritage. Traditional values are very important to members and sta . Courtesy, personal service and warm hospitality are at the very heart of the Club. e building boasts many unique architectural features, creating a warm ambiance, which is relaxed and comfortable. All of the guest suites, whether standard or superior size, o er modern facilities, some with scenic views over the rooftops to Fife or to private gardens to the front. If you are planning to dine at the clubhouse while visiting, please note that gentlemen are expected to wear a jacket and tie for lunch between Monday and Friday, and a jacket and tie for dinner Monday thru ursday. For reservations, call +44 (0) 131 556 4270 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

Rainier Club — Seattle, WashingtonImagine walking up the steps of a historic mansion after a day out on the town. You turn the key and nd yourself in the lap of luxury.  e Rainier Club’s overnight suites have been appointed with exquisite design, allowing you to feel truly at home in the midst

of downtown Seattle.Founded in 1888, e Rainier Club is a vital part of Seattle’s future as well as a cornerstone of the city’s history. From the moment you enter the club, you know that you have arrived in a very special place. e clubhouse o ers a wide-range of amenities, including room accommo-dations, health club, and dining facilities. Guests will discover ne dining in the sophisticated and intimate Heritage Room. ose seeking a relaxed dining alternative will nd it in the newly remodeled casual atmosphere of the Fireside Lounge. e health club, located on the 5th ¤ oor, o ers a cardiovascular room, strength training room, and a dry sauna. For reservations, call 206.296.6848 or e-mail [email protected].

National Cholesterol Education Month |

September is National Cholesterol Education Month, a good time to get your blood cholesterol checked and take steps to lower it if it is high. National Cholesterol Education Month is also a good time to learn about lipid pro les and about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach personal cholesterol goals.High blood cholesterol a ects over 65 million Americans. It is a serious condition that increases your risk for heart disease. The higher your cho-lesterol level, the greater the risk. You can have high cholesterol and not know it. Lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens your risk for developing heart disease and reduces the chance of having a heart attack or dying of heart disease. Now is a good time to schedule your annual physical with your primary care physician and get to know your numbers!

Did You Know?Every Month HapPENNings features a new Penn Club House Rule!

Rule 5: Reciprocal Club UsageWhen a member of the Club wishes to use a reciprocal club, a letter of introduction to that club must be obtained from the Club Executive O« ces during business hours within the 24 hours’ notice. is letter of introduction is conditional on the member’s Club account status being current. A member should be prepared to present a valid Club membership card and/or other forms of identi cation at the reciprocal club. Members must accompany any guests to reciprocal clubs. While at the reciprocal club, it is assumed that members will conduct themselves as tting representatives of the Club and will act in accordance with the reciprocal club’s rules. Inap-propriate behavior at the reciprocal club may result in a Club member’s loss of reciprocal club privileges and other disciplin-ary action in accordance with these Rules.
