Happy 126th Birthday Idaho!
National Ice Cream Month is celebrated each year in July and National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in July, in the United States. The celebrations were originated by Joint resolution 298, which was sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky on May 17, 1984.
The resolution proclaimed the month of July 1984 as "National Ice Cream Month" and July 15, 1984, as "National Ice Cream Day." It was signed into public law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984 with Presidential Proclamation 5219.
National Ice Cream Day is July 17, 2016
Idaho became the 43rd state in the Union on July 3, 1890. The State Flag of Idaho was adopted in 1907. Idaho has the only state seal designed by a woman. Emma Edwards Green designed the original great seal, adopted in 1891 by the first legislature of Idaho. Her painting is held in trust by the Idaho Historical Society - it is rich with Idaho symbols (look closely). The current state seal is an updated version commissioned in 1957.

The District Convention is coming to town July 28-30 and as you are aware, Chapter T has been tasked with leading several rides around the area. How’s that for drawing “good duty” as we used to say in the Army?
Jerry has volunteered to lead a group to the World Center for Birds of Prey on south Cole Road in Boise. Bubba and Tom have volunteered to work with the group traveling to the Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa. To date, there are approximately 30 for BOP and 16 for the Museum but there will probably be some changes during Registration. For the scenic rides, Cliff has volunteered to lead a ride to Bogus Basin and back, and Sonny has volunteered to lead another ride on the Horseshoe Bend-Emmett Loop and back. A signup sheet will be at the Registration table for all these rides.
Due to the number of riders involved, the group leaders will need to divide the main groups into two or three smaller groups of 8-10 riders each to keep the rides more manageable. We will need additional assistance from two or three other Chapter Members to serve as Ride Leaders for the sub groups. Yours truly will definitely need assistance with the Light Parade that starts organizing at 9 pm on Friday night. The proposed route is through downtown Eagle, more details to follow. If you come to the Ice Cream Day Ride on July 17th, I can take you on that route. The more Chapter Members who volunteer their time to assist with these rides, the easier it will be for all of our Ride Leaders. In order to be a Ride Leader, you must have experience leading a ride, have functioning communication equipment, and be familiar with our Chapter communication procedures.
I will be the Gathering Leader for July, and the District Convention is the Agenda item for the evening. If you have volunteered or will be available for any of these four planned rides, try to be present for the Gathering. Please call or email me if you have questions.
Chapter T’s role at the District Convention is gonna be FUN!!!

Our Gathering and ride attendance continues to grow. I want to thank the visitors for coming and hope that we showed them a good time. We wouldn’t be the Chapter we are without the excellence of all the Officers AND the Members’ assistance. You are the ones that make this Chapter GREAT!
This year is looking to be just as good as and probably better than last year, so let’s get our butts, or rather, our bikes in gear and get on the road! Dwayne Ellison Chapter Director

Joey and I have been much busier than usual, working on both Chapter business and spending time assisting the District with our 2016 Convention. All things considered, working on the food, rides, brown bags, and light parade has had fewer challenges than anticipated and has proven to be interesting and fun. Boy, have we ever learned a lot though. We look forward to having our Chapter Members participate in some of the Convention activities. Please come out and support our Chapter and enjoy Sharon Weber’s famous Sloppy Joes – FREE on Friday evening with your registration!

Couple of the Year Comments
Rob & Jeri Hofman Thank you for visiting!
July Fourth is the "biggest hot dog holiday of the year" according to TIME magazine, with Americans reportedly consuming about 155 million of them on Independence Day alone.
But despite a nationwide love for the salty snack, no one really knows where the hot dog came from. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, it is "likely that the North American hot dog comes from a widespread common European sausage brought here by butchers of several nationalities." The meaty treat's origin story remains murky, however.

The ride to Joseph, Oregon over the weekend of June 24-26 was everything that a great ride should be: unsurpassed scenery, great roads with a fair number of curves, and getting together with the group on our magnificent touring machines for lots of camaraderie, eating, and good times, etc. All in all, it was a “safe, organized and fun weekend” to quote Pam Kamm. Isn’t that what GWRRA is all about? Thanks to Hal for researching and making dinner reservations for the group on our first night in Joseph. On the return trip, we also have Hal and Gary to thank for routing us through the ‘villes of Cove and Union before returning to the Interstate a few miles north of Baker City. Both towns were nestled in low ranges of mountains in picturesque settings and both contained some great architecture dating back to the 1880’s. It’s one of those areas I would like to return to sometime and explore it in more detail.
While we’re on the subject of rides, our Ride Calendar is sparse in the late summer after Wing Ding. I am considering another dinner ride in early September, this time to Buck’s Bar & Steakhouse in Melba and a couple of breakfast rides. Weather should be great, but the evenings will begin getting shorter so our window of time is closing. If you’ve got a great ride idea in mind, possibly one that the group hasn’t done before or a new twist on a familiar ride, call me with your suggestion(s) so that we can consider placing it on the Ride Calendar.
And watch for our Ride Reminder to the Emu-Z-Um on Saturday, July 9th with lunch at the Y Bar & Café in Grandview. There’s no doubt that lunch in a cool restaurant beats a brown bag lunch in sweltering heat. You’re gonna LOVE it!!
That’s it for this month. One last thought: Beware of peacocks and mama cows when you’re out riding -- they have a habit of making an appearance at the most inconvenient of times!

Chapter Education & Safety
While going to Joseph, Oregon this past weekend, I noticed a few safety concerns that everyone should be aware of. The mountain roads are full of unseen sand that makes your bike feel like you have a flat tire in the curves. There are also many potholes in the mountain roads due to the winter snow, and there are also wildlife and domestic animals on the road roaming free around a lot of corners. We almost hit some while coming around one mountain curve. Even going through the town of Joseph there were deer on the road and in the yards of the residents. Remember that although the temperatures are going up, continue to cover up what you want to use later on in life and always wear a helmet. Tom Galas Chapter Educator

Membership Enhancement “Team Commitment”
Chapter T is growing and there have been new people at nearly every Gathering. Robert & Jeri Hofman were guests last month – Welcome! On May 14, six members of Chapter T’s Team went to Jerome for a Horizon Training Session: Glen & Joey Goff, Gary & Maxeen Evans, Tom Galas, and me. Everyone there was divided into groups or “chapters,” and Gary was chosen as the Chapter Director of the group I was in. Each group was presented with a scenario and ours was to decide on new shirts for our Chapter. Before we did our presentation, the instructor asked me to put a twist in our presentation by insisting that the shirts be lime green even if I had to be a pest at it. Nobody in our group knew I was going to do this. I thought that Gary would get upset at it but he didn’t. So at the May Gathering, Gary presented me with a lime green shirt. As you can see, the FUN FACTOR is present in everything we do. Your Team is a dedicated bunch to GWRRA and all it stands for. The next time you get a chance, why not thank them for it. They have been working hard to make the Idaho District Convention a fun event but will need your help to make it successful. If you haven’t volunteered, it is never too late to help.

July 4th is America’s 240th Independence Day. Please take a few moments to acknowledge and appreciate how much there is to celebrate about our American Dream. It’s more than just another day off, barbeques, picnics, camping, or fireworks. Particularly here in Idaho, our liberties are unparalleled: wide open country in which to ride or wander at will; spectacular scenery to enjoy within our diverse geographical areas; our National Monuments and National Recreational Areas; and of course, a myriad of other cultural and recreational opportunities.
The United States of America is indeed a great country. Citizen leaders built this country, and here, freedom is defined by our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution -- “We the People…” -- and it is defended each and every day by those who serve in our Armed Forces. Please thank the service men and women you may encounter over the weekend for their service. They were proud to serve and your recognition is always appreciated.
Be safe in your travels and, of course, especially while around any kind of fire and when handling fireworks!

Closing Thoughts…
AUGUST 1
It’s hard to believe that another month has come and gone. And what a whirlwind of a month it has been! I have been very busy with multiple projects including various tasks related to the District Convention. Now it’s time to harvest my apricots! Glen, too, has spent many hours researching and mapping upcoming Chapter rides (we were on one this past weekend), and is also coordinating the rides for the District Convention as well as the Light Parade.
Speaking of Glen, many of you may be unaware of the many Chapter hats (responsibilities) that he wears, and I feel compelled to use this opportunity to give him a shout out for what he does for and on behalf of the Chapter – and for me. Glen has enjoyed his Ride Coordinator position and strives to keep everyone interested and satisfied. After receiving suggestions from you, he considers the riding routes, rounds up Ride Leaders (thanks – you know who you are ), and arranges for dining and/or related social opportunities. As a result, our ride participation rate has been exceptional over the past two years. He has also more or less taken on the photographer’s role (when he isn’t distracted!) to document and publish our activities. For the Newsletter, Glen unofficially serves as the Assistant Editor, reviewing submitted articles for content, proofing and editing my work, and evaluating whether or not our readers will take away something of value. He gets personal kudos from me for always submitting his articles on time without prodding. As your Assistant Chapter Director, Glen maintains detailed records of our Chapter activities, and has managed to keep us all together and as informed as possible. Additionally, Glen assists me with coordinating our special events. Recently he has taken on other additional responsibilities for the District Convention. All this and he still works full time! I know how grateful Glen is for the assistance he receives from you, and I hope that you will take an opportunity to let him know that his efforts do not go unrecognized. I know that I couldn’t do what I do without his support and assistance.
My closing thoughts to each of you: Happy Fourth of July! Have a safe and meaningful holiday, lots of food and fun if you are with family and friends. I thank all of you so very much for your support and participation with our Chapter activities. It is significant and appreciated much more than you know.
See you soon and until next time, keep smiling!!
