2016 FROM OUR PTO PRESIDENT Happy 2016! Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are ready for the new year. The new semester will be busy with many things such as: the annual Library Book Fair, Valentine's parties, Arts Night, field trips, and Spring Fling. Before we know it, the school year will have flown by. I want to thank each and every one of you again for your commitment to and involvement in Madison Station. Without your help, we couldn't do what we do! We have so many more things to accomplish this year and we need your continued support. This support MAKES A DIFFERENCE! I look forward to working with all of you this semester. Sincerely, Christie Smith MSE PTO President HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Our MSE Teachers & Staff January 2 Sheila Hamilton (Resource) 2 Savannah Reis (2 nd ) 11 Nikki Ivy (3 rd ) 14 Melanie Hughes (Speech) 14 Marae Rigby (3 rd ) 17 Heather Rogers (Resource) 18 Ree Ree Byron (4 th ) 22 Betty Jo Mahaffey (Gifted) 26 ShandaWalenta (Nurse) 28 Mary Katherine Segrest (1st grade assistant) FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Dear Madison Station Families, Happy 2016! I hope your holidays were filled with fun, family, rest and that you are now ready to get back into a routine. As educators, we find that January and February are great teaching and learning months. Our students know the routines of the classroom and are not overly consumed with night sporting events and activities. I encourage you to also take advantage of these months at home to make sure homework is completed, to get in extra reading, and extra math practice. It will sure make a difference! As we get back into our routines, please make sure that your child has lunch money in his/her account. We had a large number of students that received a fruit and vegetable only tray during the last few days before the break. Remember that we do not charge in the cafeteria or in the office this year. Thank you for a great first semester! We look forward to continuing our partnership in creating learners that will one day be the leaders of our community, state, and country. Thank you for your sweet gifts during the month December. I am blessed! ARTS NIGHT CELEBRATION

Madison Station will host its 13th Annual Arts Night Celebration on Monday night, February 29th, at Madison Cen-tral High School’s Performing Arts Cen-ter.

The festivities will begin at 6:30 with a visual art gallery featuring selected pieces from MSE students. Mrs. Hammack’s 5th grade honor choir will perform selected works. The evening will culminate in the premier of this year’s original opera, written, produced and performed by fourth–grade mem-bers of Bows and Bros Making the Shows Opera Company. PREPARE TO BE AMAZED by all of the talented students in-volved in Arts Night.

The MSE Reading Fair will take place on Wednesday, January 13th. This is an optional activity, but we would love for lots of MSE students to participate! Information packets were given out before the holidays. If you need another packet or if you have questions,

please contact our librarian, Mrs. Shawna Grimes ([email protected]). It is almost time for our MSE Book Fair! The fair will take place the week of February 1st-5th, and we have some exciting events planned! We will be collecting spare change for “All for Books," a program that provides books for our classrooms. In the weeks before the fair, jars will be placed in the library for Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Hanna, and Mrs. Grimes. Students will have the opportunity to bring change to put in the jar of the person they would most like to see kiss a pig! We will have a

"Family Fun Night" on Thursday, February 4th from 5:00-7:00. Come join us for some shopping, snacks, games... and also to see the "winner" kiss a live pig!

Classroom Needs: Please check with your children to make sure they have pencils, paper, scissors, glue etc. for the 2nd semester. If you would like to donate, teachers can always use tissues, paper towels and Clorox type

wipes as we aim to keep our children healthy this semester.

Thank you!! Thank You!! The Christmas parties were such fun and enjoyed by all. Thank you to the many volunteers that helped prepare for the parties and for those that attended. What a special memory for

our students!

January Artist of the Month

Hannah Grace Williams

Born in Memphis, TN and raised in the small town of Holly Springs, MS,

Hannah Grace Williams is a southern girl through and through. She currently lives in Madison, MS with her husband Chase and two dogs, Aimus and Schnook. As an artist, her goal is to project her life experiences in the south onto canvas. Her style is one that is very layered, textured and full of depth. She is known for her bright colors and rich textures. Her signature impasto-style of applying layer upon layer of acrylic paint, and finishing with a high gloss UV-protectant varnish is a technique that she developed by trial and error. Unexpected touches can always be expected. A pallet knife is her tool of choice and acrylic is her preferred medium. She uses a pallet knife to create dimension and adds layers of color to her paintings. She never has a certain color scheme in mind when she begins a new piece; the picture evolves with each added stroke of color. She paints churches, angels, landscapes, flowers, animals, barns and abstract works. Some of her smaller pieces include crosses, hearts, and mini abstract works. Each painting is unique in its own little way, but all of her work has the same theme -- true southern charm. You can find her art at the following stores and online: The Cupboard, Clinton, MS; The Pink Possum, Madison, MS; Livingston Mercantile, Livingston, MS; Simply Spaces, Madison, MS; The Gathering, Livingston, MS; The Sugar Magnolia, Oxford, MS and Facebook.com/mississippigraceart& Instagram.com/hgrace04
