Dear Parents and Guardians,

Alleluia! The Resurrection of Jesus provides us with an entirely different perspective on our lives. We are the people of hope. We believe in an after-life and live this life differently as a result of this faith. Please join me in celebrating this momentous event in our Christian history. May the days of Easter (and spring) be filled with moments of new life made possible through Christ’s rising from the dead.

Spring seems like a well earned season. After the winter that we have experienced, it is good to finally hear birds and see children playing and enjoying the sunshine. Our school fields are busy every afternoon with practices and games. Our campus is once again filled with excitement and cheerful voices.

Special congratulations to our winter teams and coaches for providing us with another exciting season. The successes of the last three months drew many fans to our games. Wrestling and Swimming repeated as both Philadelphian Catholic League and District 12 Champions, while Hockey fell just short of a third consecutive Flyers Cup. Basketball proved to be a wonderful surprise by finishing first in the Philadelphia Catholic League Red Division and winning the District 12 (City) Championship. Their run in the PIAA State Tournament provided additional excitement. Bowling and Indoor Track continued to improve and their seasons featured several great performances. I would like to thank all of our athletes and coaches for spreading fame and providing us with much to celebrate.

Our faculty and students are likewise making some adjustments to a revised schedule due to snow holidays. We narrowly avoided another holiday on Monday, March 15, 2010 due to power outages caused by wind and rain. The power was restored 45 minutes prior to our having to make a decision; however, I express my empathy for those who had to endure the power outage over the weekend.

Enrollment and re-registration for next year is very good. La Salle is most appreciative of the sacrifice you are willing to make for your son’s education. It is my hope that our students will not disappoint you and frequently express their appreciation for your sacrifice in providing them with a value-driven education.

As the end-of-year events begin to unfold, I hope to see many of you at games, performances, and social events. La Salle continues to be a very active place, which requires a commitment of both students and their families on many levels. Your presence and support are key to our success as well as meaningful to your sons.

Enjoy all the blessings of yet another spring. May flowers and wonderful sounds fill each moment of your day.

Sincerely yours,

3 The Belcroft April 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Incredibly, warm sunny days and the emergence of intrepid tulip and crocus plants are giving unmistakable hints that the long winter of record lows and snows is finally behind us. As April begins and Easter approaches, it feels like the season of rebirth and fresh hopes is truly upon us.

During the past winter, La Salle’s Board and Administration have worked through the process of assessing the impact of the protracted economic downturn and recovery on our financial position, and developing a plan to return La Salle to fiscal self-determination. We understand the profound impact of these plans on those for whom we care the most – our students, our parents, and our faculty/staff, and sincerely appreciate the sacrifice that you make for your sons and the Brothers’ Boys of the future.

Like the dawning of a new spring day, we have moved into the future. At our recent Board of Trustees meeting, we approved the 2011 Fiscal Budget that covers the school year 2010-2011. This budget assures our fiscal strength and accountability and sets the framework for subsequent years. We are already working with the Administration and Faculty/Staff to develop compensation models that form a foundation for future budgets and are investigating alternative approaches to allow us to gradually retire our debt and control the impact of a potential extended economic recession. Our goal is to implement the results of these efforts to return to normal tuition and compensation increases in Fiscal 2012 and beyond. We will continue to work throughout the summer so that our Strategic Vision and Plans will be in the final stages of completion by our October Meeting.

In 2011, La Salle will be a $21,000,000 operation and the following pie charts highlight the breakdown of the Operating Revenues and Expenses that make up our Fiscal 2011 Budget. In addition to the Operating Revenue, in keeping with our Board directive we will be supplementing tuition with $2,737,000 to cover need-based aid and merit scholarships.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for the extraordinary support, understanding, and cooperation that you have shown. I also commend your sons for the outstanding effort, demeanor, and results that they have brought to the classroom and to the varied competition venues over the past year. You and your son make us proud and are a splendid continuation of our tremendous legacy.

Thank you and best wishes for a blessed spring.

Sincerely yours,

Benjamin J. Ventresca, Jr. ’70 Chairman Board of Trustees

National Honor SocietyLa Salle’s odyssey of weather-related event cancelations continued throughout the month of March. Due to a recent power outage on the Belcroft campus, our annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was rescheduled for Monday evening, Monday, March 29, 2010. The Office of Academic Affairs is excited to report that 88 new members were inducted into the La Salle College High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Father Anthony Janton ’69 presided at the Eucharist and induction. Personal reflections on the characteristics of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character were presented by the society’s senior officers: William McHugh, Patrick LaFata, Ryan McElroy, and Kevin Breen. Moderators of the National Honor Society are Brother William DiPasquale, FSC, and Ms. Tina Shustack. Congratulations gentlemen!

Course Registration UpdatesAside from the immediate focus of finishing our current academic year strong, planning for next year’s academic start is in full swing. Registration for the 2010-2011 school year is expected to finish up before Easter break begins on Wednesday, March 31, 2010. As students finish submitting their requests, counselors will review and approve their selections. As soon as a student’s selections are approved, a “parent sign-off sheet” will show up in your son’s Naviance account under the “course requests” heading. This form will serve as a verification of his course requests. The student and his parents should review this document to make sure that the courses listed are those he needs and/or requested for next year. If there are any problems or errors, the student should see his counselor(s) as soon as possible. Returning the signature sheet to La Salle is the responsibility of each student. It will be collected by your son’s counselor. The process will end with your son submitting the sign-off sheet before or on Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Students will have until Thursday, April 16, 2010, to entertain changes. On a related note, your son has been explained that all placements are approved by his teachers and reviewed by the respective department leader in that subject area. If you have questions or concerns about placements in World Language (Mrs. Diccicco), Math (Mr. Ponisciak), or Science (Mr. Gillespie), please contact the appropriate department chairperson. Other, more specific concerns in placements should be forwarded to the appropriate teacher or counselor.

Moving forward, the scheduling of students will take many months. It is a complex process since we are attempting to build individualized rosters for nearly 1,100 students; thus, once a roster is complete and the school year begins, that is the student’s roster. We cannot honor requests for specific teachers, lunch periods, or early dismissals (unless supported by compelling educational reasons). Your support of our efforts here is greatly appreciated. Each student will receive his official schedule for the 2010-2011 academic year in late August.

GraduationAs is the custom at La Salle, we would like to know if there are any graduates of the Class of 2010 who have members of the clergy in their families who would like to participate in the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 2010. If you have a family member who is a priest, and he would like to concelebrate the Mass at graduation, please contact Mrs. Suzanne Russo at (215) 233-2911, ext. 4896 by Friday, April 30, 2010.

SpeakUp!Congratulations to Mr. Lew Clark (Campus Minister) and Pat Kerr ’11 who received “Jimmy Coins” at SpeakUp! this past month. This honor is given to students, educators, and parents who embody the “Spirit of Jimmy.” They make a difference in the lives of others because they are non-judgmental and recognize the goodness and potential in each person they interact with. Each one of them possesses the character traits attributed to Jimmy – resiliency, empathy, humility and loyalty.

Battle of the BandsThe Battle of the Bands was held on Friday, March 12, 2010 and featured eight bands on three stages. The event raised $1,600, which was donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The winners were:

1st Place – “No Safety” featuring seniors Craig Bunting, John Ericcson, Dean Ripley, and Nick Volpe

2nd Place – “Cadence” featuring seniors Teddy Kradzinski, Maitland Minderjahn, and Tim Vogel

3rd Place – “Enterline” featuring freshmen Aaron Carreras, Mark Chandler, Pat May, John Tyrell, and Colin Weber

Senior NightOn Monday, March 15, 2010 the Class of 2010 marked 82 Days until Graduation (Saturday, June 5, 2010) with a dress-down day, a pasta dinner, and entertainment by hypnotist Kevin Hurley. The seniors and faculty/staff who attended had a great time! The event had to be rescheduled this year because of inclement weather. Hopefully next year’s celebration will be 100 days before Graduation!

Student Council ElectionsStudent Council Elections for 2010 – 201 will begin in April and conclude by mid-May. Students have the opportunity to run for Executive Officers (seniors only), Class Officers, and/or Senators.

Fran Johnson Field DayLa Salle’s Sixth Annual Field Day is scheduled for Friday, April 23, 2010 (rain date Monday, April 26, 2010). For the past five years this event has been a huge success due to the planning and execution done by the Student Council. The enthusiasm of the faculty, staff and the student body for the day has been great. Students are able to “compete” in games of knowledge, dexterity, and athleticism while interacting with faculty and staff that run the events and/or accompany the students around the campus. Two favorites of the students have been the ultimate frisbee and dodge ball – competitions sure to return again this year. The day will end with a final assembly which will feature a tug-of-war between homerooms on each level and the walk/run on the track in memory of Fran Johnson, a teacher/coach who passed away in 2004. It should be a great day for the entire La Salle community.

A Taste Of The Big AppleOn Monday, March 22, 2010, forty-two juniors and five members of the faculty/staff from La Salle College

High School converged upon New York City to meet with alumni and gain valuable insight into a variety of

career paths. The primary focus of the trip was to acquaint students with the wide range of opportunities

offered by New York’s renowned businesses and institutions, and featured visits to the Public Theater,

United States District Court, New York Stock Exchange, Clinton Recording Studios, Madison Square Garden,

and Time, Inc.

The day began at the New York Public Theater on Lafayette Street in Greenwich Village, where the students met with eight La Salle alumni. The alumni who spoke about their various career and educational paths included: John Behan ’60, a law professor; John Casper ’87, a financial controller; Reverend Steven Clark ’72, a pastor in the Archdiocese of New York; Tim Erb ’94, a private wealth manager; Martin Feeny ’90, a senior vice president for an insurance and investment firm; Jerry Hathaway ’72, a labor relations and entertainment attorney; Marty Silvestri ’67, a composer and musical producer; and Walter Updegrave ’70, Editor of Money Magazine.

The boys divided into three groups and visited various locations in Manhattan. One group traveled to the United States District Courthouse, where they sat in on a trial and met with United States District Judge Kevin Castel and discussed the legal system and various legal professions. They proceeded to the New York Stock Exchange, where they were given a tour of the Stock Exchange floor by traders from J.P. Morgan and learned the process of buying and selling stocks and bonds.

A second group traveled to Clinton Recording Studios where they discussed the entertainment business with Marty Silvestri and sat in on the recording of a new Broadway musical. The boys also toured Madison Square Garden and discussed the business side of sports with Pat McDonough of MSG.

The third group traveled to Time, Inc. and toured various historical exhibits, including the Zapruder footage of the JFK assassination, and discussed the editorial, advertising, and publishing process with Walter Updegrave.

“How could a trip like this not be inspiring? Besides the fact that it occurred in New York, one of the most fascinating cities in the world, what made this trip really inspiring was the fact that it was led by La Salle graduates. To think that they all sat in the same seats we did, and at the time, did not really have a clue as to their career, motivates me to not fall in to the trap of going into a career simply for the money. The love for their careers, which was evident as they introduced themselves and touched on what they did for a living, was nothing short of inspiring. How many kids my age can honestly say they got a tour of Madison Square Garden or witnessed the recording of the soundtrack for a potential Broadway show? The opportunities all display the endless variety of options that one has heading into adult life.”

Marcus Richardson ’11

The day concluded with a visit to the Vatican Embassy for the United Nations, where the students had an audience with The Most Reverend Celestino Migliore, the Titular Archbishop of Canosa and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. His Excellency Archbishop Celestino Migliore and the students discussed the role of the United Nations in world affairs, the role of the Permanent Mission of the Holy See in World Affairs, other ways in which the Vatican seeks influence in world politics, the significance of the Holy See’s declaration of the Year of Priests and Vocations, and future challenges a sixteen or seventeen year old boy of today can expect in his lifetime as well as what leadership positions should be sought to address those challenges.

The College Counseling Department can be found at on the school’s website at www.lschs.org/college and is filled with important information about the college search and application process.

JuniorsVillanova University will host the Main Line College Fair on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the Pavilion on the Villanova Campus. Admission counselors from over 300 hundred colleges and universities will be present to discuss entrance requirements, curriculum offerings, and financial aid. The event will provide students and their families the opportunity to gather information about colleges and universities from across the country.

Check the calendar on our web page for a list of college fairs, open houses, and information nights.

Visits to college campuses are most important in finding the right match. Make every effort to visit campuses while classes are in session to get a realistic view of campus life. Please call ahead to make a reservation and remember to email the Admission Office after the tour and interview.

A list of academic and community service summer programs for sophomores and juniors is available on our College Counseling website, www.lschs.org/college at the Pre-College Summer Programs link. Many of these programs take place on college campuses locally, nationally, and internationally.

Juniors are reminded to be aware that May 5, 2010 is the deadline for the June 5, 2010 SAT. Consider taking the SAT II: Subject Tests on June 5, 2001. Many selective colleges require or recommend SAT Subject Tests for admission or placement. The ACT registration deadline is May 7, 2010 for the test on June 12, 2010. Remember to register for the Writing Section when taking the ACT. See the standardized testing tab on our website, www.lschs.org/college, for details. Also check out the Test Preparation site on Naviance for sample SAT and ACT questions and tutorials.

Students hoping to play intercollegiate sports should check out the NCAA Eligibility link at www.lschs.org/college for clearer understanding of the recruiting process and the NCAA Clearinghouse Eligibility requirements. Contact coaches, the Director of Athletics, and College Counselors with questions. As mentioned at Information Night for Parents of Juniors, another good source of information is The Winning Edge, the Student-Athlete’s Guide to College Sports published by Octameron Press.

With the costs of college education increasing, now is a good time to investigate scholarship programs at www.lschs.org/college at the Scholarship Information link. For comprehensive information about financial aid, check out College Links and Resources at www.lschs.org/college. An early estimate of eligibility for federal and state financial

aid, the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), can be calculated at the FAFSA site, www.FAFSA4caster.ed.gov Also check out the December 28, 2009 issue of the Wall Street Journal and an article titled “College Aid: There’s More Out There If You Ask” that can be found at Links and Resources at www.lschs.org/college

Parents of juniors are reminded to return to the College Counseling Center the following forms (if you have not already done so):

• Permission to Release Academic Information

• Parent’s Section

• Criteria for Selecting Colleges

Juniors are reminded of the importance of thoughtfully completing their homework for Advisory Class. Each assignment is a building block for the next in the college search an application process.

An important reminder as the semester progresses is that GPA’s and rigor of curriculum are the two top criteria for admission to college. Spring is the time for renewed motivation and best effort. It is also time to think about asking two teachers, preferably from junior year, to consider writing letters of recommendation for senior year college applications. Remember that writing letters of recommendation is very time-consuming and is a voluntary service on the part of our faculty.

SeniorsAll seniors who receive any scholarship or grant awards from any college (whether or not they intend to enroll) must bring a copy of the award letter to the College Counseling Center as soon as it is received. In order for a student’s name to appear in the Graduation Program as a scholarship recipient, he must follow this procedure.

Be prepared to register at one college by that college’s registration deadline. May 1, 2010 is the date viewed by the collegiate community as the universal reply date for regular admission. You will be required to send an admission and/or housing deposit to confirm your enrollment intentions. Under no circumstances should you enroll at more than one college.

After the student has committed to a college he should write a letter informing all other colleges of his intention to enroll elsewhere. This is an obligation to be taken seriously. It enables other students who may be “wait listed” to move up on that list.

Final transcripts will be sent by the College Counseling Office to the colleges where your sons are enrolling so it is important that seniors notify Mrs. O’Connell of their final choice. On the subject of final grades, check out “Colleges Don’t Like Senior Slump in High School” under Links and Resources at www.lschs.org/college

Show your son that learning is about more than grades. You probably ask your son how he’s doing in school. You may ask how biology is going or if math is getting any easier. If you’re lucky, he’ll tell you a funny story about something that happened in art class. But be honest – that’s not what you’re really asking about. You want to know about your son’s grades.

It may be an important concern, but remember that the learning process is just as important. Make sure you show interest in what your son is learning at school and not just what his report card says. Be sure to ask your son:

• What book he is reading. What questions does he have about the story? Does he relate to the main character? Does the book remind him of any others he has read?

• About his most recent test. Does he think the test was a good way to measure how well he knew the material?

• About his accomplishments. How did he handle the most difficult science problem he recently aced? How did he feel after finishing that research paper?

• If he has had any experiences in class that changed his way of thinking. You may be able to share some of your own experiences that had a similar effect on you.

Questions like these show your son that you are interested in what he is thinking. They also show you are monitoring his development. Both of these reinforce the message that learning is about far more than just grades.

Chore options can motivate your son.If you left it up to your son, the grass in your backyard would be eight feet high. He would be completely out of clean clothes and you’d have dust elephants, not dust bunnies, in the corners of your house.

For whatever reason, chores just aren’t high on your son’s list of priorities. Consider asking your son to spend a half hour per day doing whatever chores he chooses. Perhaps he’ll mow the lawn on Thursday and tackle that laundry on Monday. He may vacuum his room on Tuesday and clean the bathroom on Wednesday.

By letting your son decide what chores he completes, he gets a taste of adulthood. If he needs more encouragement, make it a house rule that he can’t watch TV, play video games, or chat online until a half hour of chores have been completed, but avoid nagging him if he occasionally opts to stare at the ceiling instead of completing chores.

Avoid being an overprotective parent to teach independence.Overprotective parents tend to “rescue” kids from problems to protect them from any pain or suffering. Kids often love this kind of parenting – at the time. But overprotection can prevent them from learning the life skills they’ll need as adults.

It’s especially important to avoid overprotecting teens. Teenagers need to learn to take care of themselves, especially as they will probably move away from home in a few years.

To make sure you’re not an overprotective parent:

• Avoid rescuing your son from small problems. If he has forgotten his geometry book at school and he has homework to do, he’ll have to figure something out. (Obviously, if your child is dealing with a larger problem, like being bullied, it’s fine to step in and help him.)

• Give your son responsibilities around the house. Knowing how to do his own laundry, how to make doctors’ appointments or how to mow the lawn will definitely come in handy when he’s an adult.

Have you talked with your son about integrity? Even a teen with the best of intentions will make mistakes. He may lie to a friend. He may go to a party he told you he wouldn’t attend.

It’s important to talk with your son about acting with integrity. While morality is the set of beliefs that help your son judge what’s right and wrong, integrity is how he acts on those beliefs. It’s great if your son says he believes in being honest, but what does he do when his friend asks for the answer to Question 10 on the test? What he does in that minute affects his integrity.

There are going to be times when he makes decisions that he knows are wrong. Some experts say that teens actually learn integrity in those minutes – they gain integrity by losing it, but that only works if someone helps them think through their choice. Ask your son:

• What got in the way of telling the truth?

• Were you trying to impress someone else?

• Would you have acted differently if you had been with a different group of people?

Tell your son that integrity is like a muscle. The more he uses it, the stronger it will become. So when he has to

make a tough decision, he should ask one question: Will this action build up my integrity?

Regular consequences lead to fewer arguments with your son. He’s missed his curfew. You’re too tired to argue about it, so you let it slide. It happens all the time.

Parents think they are avoiding an argument by letting their teens break the rules. And they are – for the moment, but they’re really just postponing the battle until the next time they try to enforce the rules.

It’s one of the great mysteries of discipline. The more consistently you apply consequences, the less you will have to impose them.

When you’re inconsistent, your son starts to think you don’t really mean what you say. The rules really aren’t rules – they’re more like suggestions. So he’ll fight your rules all the time. After all, sometimes pushing back works. On the other hand, if you enforce curfew every time, your teen will almost never fight. She knows what to expect if she breaks the rules, so she’s more likely to follow them.

Help your son benefit from the effects of community service. Woodrow Wilson, a wartime president, once said, “If you would be a leader, you must lead your own generation, not the next.” That’s what teen volunteers do every day.

Over the years, researchers have examined many of the positive effects of community service on teens, which include:

• Respect. Teens who volunteer learn to respect others and themselves. As they work to solve problems, they gain new skills. They see the results of their work. They gain the respect not only of their peers, but also of adults and community members.

• Leadership skills. Teens who participate in community service learn how to organize others. They know how to work in teams. Those are skills they can use in the classroom today and in the workplace tomorrow.

• The “coolness factor.” Other teens think that those who volunteer are cool. They respect them as leaders and look up to them.

La Salle Academy is dedicated to educating children in grades 3 through 8 whose potential is limited by social, academic, or financial challenges, and whose parents desire, but cannot afford, a Catholic education. The keyboards will allow the music teacher to introduce the art of playing an instrument to these underprivileged students.

Spring training is almost over and the Men of La Salle has already reserved our annual trip to beautiful Camden Yards in Baltimore. We have purchased 125 tickets, which are available on a first come, first serve basis. The Orioles have many new players and will be entertaining the Boston Red Sox at 1:30 pm. The day will begin with and Express Mass by Father Tony at 9:00 am and the buses will leave at 10:00 am to provide time to walk around this lovely baseball facility before the start of the game. Our tickets this year will be in the sun in the lower boxes along the left field line. The Red Sox are considered a premium, so the total cost including the buses is $69.40 per person. We expect the tickets to go fast, so please reserve your spaces early.

As we do every year, after the game, time is allowed to visit the Inner Harbor to grab something to eat or watch some of the veteran fathers bring a few laughs to everyone. Buses will leave from the ESPN Sports Zone at 7:00 pm for the trip home.

St. Vincent’s Soup KitchenEvery weekend through the end of the school year, the Men of LaSalle will continue our service to those less fortunate in our community, by helping to prepare and serve meals at St. Vincent’s. The Soup Kitchen is located at 109 East Price Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. This is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to spend some time together in service to the needy in our community, while at the same time setting an example to give back. Volunteers are needed to prepare food every Saturday and serve every Sunday from 9:30 to 11:30 am and 12:30 to 2:30 pm. No experience is needed, just a desire to spend time together and help others. Please go online to sign up and help make a difference.

Building Bridges of SolidarityCochabamba, Bolivia

Señora Lastenia Breen, a member of La Salle’s Spanish faculty, is asking for your generosity towards the people of Cochabamba, Bolivia. They are in need of usable clothing for all age groups, including newborns (no XL or bulky clothing). This past summer, nineteen La Salle students and three faculty members traveled to Cochabamba, and distributed clothes and food donated by the La Salle families to children in hospitals, country-side schools, and the poor working class. They also helped to construct, paint, and cement rural schools.

We need your help again. Building Bridges of Solidarity, will be traveling to Cochabamba, Bolivia in June of 2010 to help assist the people of the country. All La Salle families are invited to help with this International Lasallian Outreach. Donations will be accepted at any time at the La Salle College High School Language Office. Thank you for your generosity. If you have any questions at all, please contact Señora Lastenia Breen at [email protected]
