Marcello Mastroianni, Daniela Rocca, Stefania Sandrelli Baron Fefé Cefalù is a Sicilian nobleman bored of life and of wife Rosalia: he falls in love with young and beau-tiful cousin Angela, who spends summers in the same palace. Since divorce is impossible in Italy in the 1960s, he decides to kill the wife, knowing that sentence would be very light if he proved that he committed murder for a matter of honour, i.e. when he found the wife together with another man. Therefore, he starts finding a lover for Rosalia, using Carmelo Patané, a painter well-known by her.

Bill MorelliHoly Smokes… It is 2012! Where did 2011 go? It is hard to believe that we celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the Festa della Repubblica, and the many diverse events that took place at YOUR center throughout the year.
It was great to have the First Annual Sportsman’s Dinner - honoring Judge Peter Maceroni, a Craft and Gold Swap event and “Christmas with the Gaylords.” And, as a final wrap - a return of the Judelaires for the
final Nonna’s Nite before Christmas - which was an outstanding success. With over 400 attendees, it was the finest way to start the final week before Christmas.
As we look forward to 2012, we are anticipating another fine year for your IACS Center. Our new Consulting Chef Dan Lowry has already added a number of innovations to our menus and our Executive Chef Geoff Vercnocke continues to please all palates with his amazing knowledge of soups and fine meals.
We also welcome Father Pino Licciardi to Holy Family Church. I know that the Italian Community has been patiently awaiting a new pastor for that church and is now trying diligently to build a community of parishioners for it.As we begin 2012, I want to wish you all Buon Capo Anno and Salute for all your family. Ciao

Post Holiday Blahs
Banana Loaf Cake Yield: 6 servings
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 2/3 cup granulated sugar2 teaspoons double acting baking powder 2 ea. eggs ¼ teaspoon baking soda 1 ea. egg yolks1/3 teaspoon salt 1 cup mashed very ripe banana1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1 cup seedless raisins1/3 cup unsalted butter room temperature ½ cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
One 9x5x3 inch loaf pan, greased and lined, bottom and sides with greased bakingpaper.
Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Sprinkle with grated lemon rind. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and extra egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add sifted ingredients to bananas, raisins and nuts. Then blend all ingredients well into a smooth batter. Pour mixture into the prepared pan. Bake at 350 degrees F. for approximately 1 hour or until the point of the knife inserted through the center comes out clean.
The holidays come and go so fast these days that it seems like most of us are already looking forward to Spring …Which means we’ll have to find a way to overcome those dreary January, February and March months. I will share an idea with you that I think is fun and entertaining. That is to look for cooking classes at your local school, township, or at one of the local department stores
where you can learn from top chefs and share ideas with friends.
I remember one year when my wife and I signed up at Hudson’s to learn how to decorate cakes. It was great to have a night out with her, but it was also nice to show off our newly acquired tips when baking and decorating cakes for family gatherings. I encourage you to really take advantage of the many types of classes to learn from such as regional cuisine, international, fruit and vegetable carving, baking classes, healthy cooking or learning about wine and spirits.
Lastly, please come out and try some of the new recipes Chef Geoff and I are preparing at the IACS Banquet & Conference Center. We are always listening and sharing new ideas on great food, and our plan for 2012 is to purchase a commercial pasta machine and a sausage stuffer to make fresh pasta and homemade Italian sausage. I have a recipe that I have been waiting to make that includes the both that I think you will all enjoy!
So great ideas are in the works at the IACS, and I thank you for your continued support.
Best wishes
for 2012

The talented and gracious Aaron Caruso thrilled the residents and staff at Evangelical Home of S t e r l i n g H e i g h t s with a “command” performance o n November 28, 2011.
The concert was quickly arranged by Aaron’s dear friend and queen of our hearts, Cathy Ripari, who was at Evangelical recuperating from her recent surgery.
Although her family, numerous friends, and fellow club members know Cathy as an impresario who appreciates great talent and has organized many musical events, Cathy’s reputation had not preceded her to Evangelical. Therefore, some of the staff members were understandably a little skeptical when Cathy announced she needed
a room with a piano because Aaron Caruso was coming to perform!
And what a performance he gave! Aaron sang
some Italian favorites and American classics, as well as, the beautiful Irish ballad “Danny Boy”. He chatted and joked with the audience and made them feel as special as an audience at Carnegie Hall. Dawn Dahl, RD at Evangelical, said “It was awesome to see the residents light up when they watched him perform.” Dawn posed for a photo with Aaron to send to her mom, who has seen him perform several times and is a great fan. Aaron concluded with a beautiful performance of “Oh Holy Night” and a promise to return soon. It was a memorable afternoon for all!

Towels, towels there are not enough towels!“Ask Joe”
He will know !
Joe Cipriano Jr.CEO, Constructeam Inc.
“ASK JOE” he will know “DUMB QUESTION” from Tonya in Farmington Hills: “Joe, HELP!! I’m going to be having a HUGE Super Bowl party at my home this year and I’m really stressed out! Instead of snow this year we got rain, rain and more rain. The recent rain storms that seemed to last forever have found their way into my basement for the first time since we moved in 5 years ago and I have no idea where it came from. We soaked it up with a ton of towels and used a wet/dry vacuum to soak it up and it appears to look fine, however, it is starting to smell really bad and I’m really worried something is wrong. OMG! Where is the smell coming from? It’s horrible!! Should I do something more? And how can I prevent this from happening again?” Really sad :(
Answer for Tonya in Farmington Hills:
I’m so glad you asked this question; a lot of people are in the same position this year. The answer isn’t exactly simple, but with the right information and a little effort your Super Bowl party should go on as scheduled with no worse smells then chicken wings and nachos! :)
Using towels and a wet/dry vacuum is a logical solution in cases when you have concrete floors and walls. However, the horrible smell you mention makes me suspicious? Keep reading. First, where did the rain enter the basement? Was it the floor drains? Was it the sump pump? Or did it come in from the perimeter of the basement walls? If it came from the
floor drains, the technical term is “Black Water” (basically considered “crappy” water!). If it came from the sump pump, the technical term is “grey water” (typically clean water). The good news is, both sewer and sump pump back-ups are a limited coverage insurance loss with a proper insurance Rider called, “Sump and back-up coverage”. That is a question for your insurance agent. The not so good news: if the water was around the perimeter of the basement walls this policy will not help you. Ground water is generally a foundation problem and insurance coverage will not protect you even with a Rider. Check out the foundation tips on our website www.restoreitright.com to try and prevent ground water from entering your basement.
Now, is your basement finished with carpet, drywall, trim molding and doors? I suspect at the very least, you had carpet and that is the culprit that is producing the smell. This happens when all the water was not removed. It only takes 72 hours of carpet and drywall being wet for the water to go from “clear” safe water to “black” dangerous water, no matter where it came from. Now, here is where it really gets smelly. After 72 hours you have to remove and discard carpet, pad, base molding, drywall and any wet insulation. It sounds like you are past your 72 hours and towels will not soak up your problem. The basement will likely need to be dried down professionally with commercial dehumidifiers, and air movers
and sprayed with an antimicrobial in order to prevent future bacteria or mold growth in the future. I know, what a pain in the butt! The good news is that there are people to help you and you are not alone with this problem. So, Tonya, put the towels back in your linen closet & call Constructeam 24/7 if you have an emergency so we could help you soak up this problem.
This was a long answer, but an awesome question that we get a lot. And remember at “Ask Joe” He will know, there is never a “DUMB” question, but always a “SMART” answer! - Joe

The Gaylords, one of America’s favorite musical and comedy teams, appeared at the Italian American Cultural Center on Saturday, December 17, 2011.
No matter how you bill them, or whether they’re headlining or co-starring, The Gaylords are not only a singing comedy team, but they’re also a comedy team, as well…and what a fantastic performance they gave at the Italian Cultural Center. Over 450 of their fans attended.
The afternoon and evening shows with The Gaylords were an unmatched experience. The audiences’ jaws ached from laughter. The Gaylords are to audiences what the finest Italian wine cellars are to gourmets!
If you missed the Gaylords this time around, watch for a future engagement at the Italian Cultural Center.

Christmas magic was in the air at the Italian American Cultural Center on Saturday, December 10, 2011. Santa Claus took some time out from his busy schedule at the North Pole to come and visit with the boys and girls who came to have Breakfast with Santa. He even liked being with us so much that he stayed for Lunch. Of course we even took care of his Reindeer and gave them lunch.
The Center was transformed into a Christmas workshop as kids and adults attended craft center and made Christmas decorations for their friends and families. Many smart looking crafts were displayed at the tables for all to see. One little boy gave his recently cut, colored, and decorated paper tree to Santa.
The second sitting of Breakfast was entertained by the children of the Italian Language Classes as they sang Christmas songs in English and Italian. Over 30 kids participated in singing led by Maria Sugameli, Director of the Italian
Language Department of the IACS.
The Luncheon sitting was entertained by the Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan Children’s Choir accompanied by the “Cima di Abruzzo” composed of Lucio D’Aloisio, Maria Cicchini and Roberto Cicchelli. The Group sang traditional Italian and American Christmas carols.
Altogether, the event was attended by over 300 people who came to the IACS to visit with Santa, but left with a little peace in their heart knowing that the younger generation was carrying on the popular traditions.

On January 14, 2012, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History will be presenting The Great Michigan Read: Arc of Justice and The Ossian Sweet Trials. Former Chief Judge of the Wayne County Circuit Court William J. Giovan will portray Judge Frank Murphy in Dr. Sweet’s Tinderbox, the dramatic re-enactment of the 2nd Sweet trial that is one of the main features of this historic event. Dr. Sweet’s Tinderbox is based upon the National Book Award winning Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age by Dr. Kevin Boyle.
Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age tells the story of Dr. Ossian Sweet, an African-American physician who moved his family to an all-white neighborhood in 1920’s Detroit. When a white mob gathered to force Sweet back to the ghetto, Sweet gathered friends and acquaintances for protection. The confrontation ended in a murder indictment when a white man was killed. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People took charge and ensured that famed attorney Clarence Darrow defended Sweet in a sensational trial that ended in Sweet’s acquittal. The trial was presided over by Judge Frank Murphy, who later on became Michigan’s governor. President Franklin Roosevelt eventually appointed Murphy to The United States Supreme Court.
William Giovan is looking
forward to performing in Dr. Sweet’s Tinderbox. “As a lawyer, amateur actor, and former Recorder’s Court Judge myself, I couldn’t have asked for a more awesome role to portray than that of Frank Murphy, one of the legal and civil rights giants of Detroit and the nation,” says Giovan. He has been interested in acting and has performed off and on since his De LaSalle High School days and is still a member of Grosse Pointe Theatre.
In 2010, Giovan completed his final year on the bench as Chief Judge of the Wayne County Circuit Court, where he served for 36 years. He first attained judicial office in 1966 when he was elected to a short-term vacancy as Recorder and Judge of the Recorder’s Court. During that time he was ex officio a member of the City of Detroit Election Commission. From 1970 through 1973 he sat by appointment at monthly intervals as a judge of Recorder’s Court. Judge Giovan also served on the Common Pleas of Detroit from 1973 to 1976.
Dr. Sweet’s Tinderbox was written and is being directed by retired educator, playwright and T.V. host Brenda Perryman. Perryman had the honor to meet and discuss Arc of Justice with Kevin Boyle a couple of months ago. He said he was happy she tackled the trial. “There was so much information to compile into little over an hour, but I think the audience will get the entire idea,” says Perryman. “It’s also wonderful when
you’re working with great actors including Judge Giovan.”
The Museum’s programming January 14, 2012 will include: a dramatization (Dr. Sweet’s Tinderbox) of the 2nd of the historic Detroit 1925-26 murder trials involving Dr. Ossian Sweet, Clarence Darrow, and Judge Frank Murphy that became an early and significant marker for civil rights efforts, a short literary arts interpretation by InsideOut, a panel discussion with law professionals (Jocelyn Benson, Denise Page Hood, Dr. Irshad Altheimer) and Q&A, regarding historic and contemporary racial equality issues involving themes drawn from Arc of Justice. Special guests will be Students of the Detroit Urban Debate League.
The event, Arc of Justice and The Ossian Sweet Trials, starts at 1 p.m. on January 14, 2012 and will be held in the GM Theatre of the Charles Wright Museum of African-American History. There is no cost associated with this event.

Dear Friends & Members of all the Clubs and to all of you, who donated food and preparation, please accept our sincere thanks for participating in the Christmas Party luncheon for the residents of the Saint Louis Center.
To have a successful party, it takes many hands. We want to thank all the individuals, who took the time to help prepare for this special day.
All your donations, whether monetary, food, or clothing, or just being there was much appreciated. The 50 residents who received the presents from their wish list were very excited and happy to get it from Santa Claus and the help of Padre Pino Licciardi of Holy Family Church.
There were approximately 70 people from our community who were all excited to be
at the Center and to eat and serve these special people. Thanks to all that helped.
Monetary gifts were given to Fr. Enzo and his staff. Much clothing was also brought in for the residents to use. We did it all together, in the Spirit of Christmas, for the
people that need to know WE CARE, “The Residents” of St Louis Center. I hope that we can do this again next year!
