With the greatest respect to all the long-suffering teaching staff who’ve crossed our various paths during our formative years, we think there’s been a horrible mistake. We can distinctly remember being told that autumn was a time when the whole world began to gradually slow down, shed, wither, and brace itself for the cold. Kids nearly come to blows this time of year for use of the solitary brown and orange crayons in the class. But having a quick nosey around our beloved NE1, things are starting to feel a lot more vernal (that means spring-like). There are new shops, new menus, new venues, new ideas and a whole lot of pretty exciting new plans. Far from falling from the trees, we’re positively blooming at present. So, with us as your cultural bee, join us as we hop from petal to petal keeping your spare time pollinated.

THE FORTNIGHT AHEAD IS FULL OF PROMISE WITH PLENTY OF IDEAS FOR PEOPLE TO SEE AND PLACES TO GO. CHECK OUT WHAT’S HAPPENING IN NEWCASTLE HERE.

For people who might not have visited before, can you tell us a little bit about Paradiso? We like to think of Paradiso as a hidden gem. We’re on Market Lane just off Pilgrim Street. Italian owned, we’re passionate about our food and creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

What sort of thing do you specialise in serving? Authentic Mediterranean cuisine, all prepared fresh on site and, where possible, using local produce. We even bake our own bread!

What made you decide to introduce pizzas to the menu? In short, our customers. We had many requests, especially from the families that come in, so we decided to do it.

What kind of pizzas can people expect to see? Authentic thin crust pizzas using the finest Italian cheeses such as ‘Fior Di Latte’. The ingredients are really important in creating that authentic Italian flavour.

Other than your passion for food, what motivates you? Happy customers. It’s not complicated, it’s about great food, good value and fantastic service. We like to think that a happy customer is one we’ll see again.

GIUSEPPE FRUTTUOSO OF PARADISO, NEWCASTLE@PARADISONE1One of those restaurants you’ll discover by word of mouth rather than by walking past. Tucked away down Market Lane, Paradiso is a hidden treasure.

After nursing a baby bunny back to health, an American family decides to release it back into the wild. With some... um... unfortunate consequences.

WHO’S THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON YOU’VE MET IN NEWCASTLE?I almost met Justin Timberlake once. I was on a Geography field trip looking at regeneration on the Quayside and he was coming out of Malmaison. He was a lot shorter than I realised and had a very amusing swagger.REBECCA CECELIA HOWARD, 23, NORTHUMBERLAND

QUICK QUESTIONQUICK QUESTION

LOST WORLD OF NORMAN CORNISHOften described as “the last pitman painter”, Norman Cornish spent 33 years working down the mines before forging a wonderful career as an artist - primarily with paintings and drawings of miners, their work, and their communities. Running from 18 October and into the new year, the Northumbria University gallery and Baring Wing play host to his Lost World collection, which spans his entire career.www.northumbria.ac.uk

NEW LIVING ROOM MENUNow there’s nothing wrong with a sandwich meal deal from a supermarket (thank heavens), but that hasn’t stopped The Living Room from trying to tempt you with something a bit more substantial. Offering everything from sandwiches and steaks to burgers and bakes, they’ve got lunchtime sorted for anyone venturing near Grey Street on their hour off. Don’t worry, a lot of these treats come in at under 500 calories as well.ww.thelivingroom.co.uk

BOWLED OVERNewcastle’s become home to many things over the years, but a “boutique bowling alley” is definitely a first. That’s precisely the idea behind Lane 7, which opens on St James’ Boulevard later this month, and includes pool and ping-pong tables, a private karaoke booth and some quality dining, as well as eight posh bowling lanes.www.lane7.co.uk

JUICE FESTIVALShowcasing more projects than you could shake your keys at, Juice Festival 2013 is all set to celebrate the burgeoning and blossoming creativity of our region’s children and young people this month. Looking at the innovative ways the whole family can engage with the arts, the festival runs from 25th October to 3rd November and takes in the likes of Northern Stage, BALTIC, Dance City and Laing Art Gallery.www.newcastlegateshead.com/juice-home

PATHWAYS CHARITYIf you’ve been wondering what all the fancy posters dotted around intu Eldon Square are about, then wonder no more. Local charity Pathways 4 All, which provides leisure and social opportunities for children with disabilities and additional needs, has asked 31 of its younger beneficiaries to star in a photo shoot that reflects the new £22m shopping centre investment. As the “next generation of shoppers”, their faces will adorn hoardings both inside and out.www.pathways4all.co.uk

YATES’ BAR OFFERWe’re always beside ourselves when we find a new way to treat you lot, and thanks to the good folk down at Yates’ we’re about to do just that. Not only has the Grainger Street bar had a full interior makeover, but it now joins the Slug & Lettuce, Percy Arms, Three Bulls Heads, Black Garter, Label, Pop World, Old George, Flares and the Akenside in offering all NE1 Exclusive Card holders 25% off all their transactions. You’re welcome.www.ne1exclusive.com

THINK TANK MOVESince opening its doors in December 2012, Think Tank? has been bringing some of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll to the region, or more specifically, to Hoults Yard. Now though, they’ve taken over Digital’s adjacent venue, The Other Rooms, and have completely remodelled it with a new sound system, lighting and visuals, as well as improved sight lines and facilities for both artists and customers. www.wearethinktank.tv

ALIVE AFTER FIVEWe love a birthday here at NE1, and even more so when it’s one of our own. Our Alive After Five project, which has seen millions of people enjoying free parking after 5pm and extended retail opening hours until 8pm, turns three this month. We couldn’t be prouder of the impact it’s had on the city and, now that we’ve secured its funding until at least 2019 (should we be re-elected), we think it’s still got a lot to give.www.getintonewcastle.co.uk

PRIMA FUNCTION ROOMWhisper it quietly, but party season – and its mix of fizz, karaoke and regrettable photocopier incidents – is fast approaching. And so demand for a decent function room is rising by the day. Thankfully, Prima on the Quayside has had the bright idea of opening up its spaces to you and the rest of your family/co-workers/ civil war recreation society. Seating 20-120 it offers food packages from £5-£50 a head.www.primarestaurant.co.uk

with a spooky twist. Twinkle-toed children can choose the style of dance they would like to take part in or choose a combination of two.

Across at Tyneside Cinema’s pop-up school in Eldon Square, kids will be calling ‘lights, camera, action’. The Film Boot Camp runs

from 28 October to 1 November, from 10am to 3pm for ages nine-to-twelve, and is part of the National Youth Film Festival.During an action-

packed week kids can gain hands-on experience of camerawork, special effects and show off their masterpieces at a

screening for family and friends on the final day.Budding masterchefs can try their hand at Spooky Cooking at Northern Stage’s cookery workshop

on 31 October at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. And the best part is... they get to eat their

culinary delights afterwards. The theatre is also hosting a Behind the Scenes event for would-be thespians on 30 October. Find out what goes on backstage when all those actors are on stage in this event for young people aged 14+. Over at Seven Stories little ones can settle down for a Spooky Story Party on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 October at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Mini ghosts and ghouls are invited

to hear spooky tales, sing songs to frighten away monsters under the bed and join in with interactive activities. Dressing up is encouraged at the event which is suitable for children aged 18 months to four years. And it’s music to our ears as Julia Donaldson’s Gruffalo and Gruffalo’s Child are brought to life on the big screen at the Sage Gateshead with live orchestral accompaniment from the Royal Northern Sinfonia. There are two performances on 28 October at 1.30pm and 4pm.

Whether it’s zombie workshops, pumpkin carving, art classes, honing their hip hop moves or discovering the science behind slime, there’s something to entertain all kids this half-term.The holidays run from Monday 28 October to 1 November with Halloween falling on the Thursday. And for kids that like to get their hands dirty they should head to the Centre for Life and its slime workshops. Little witches and wizards can roll up their sleeves and make ghoulish gloop in the daily classes from 26 October to 3 November when they can learn about the science behind the slippery substance. In the Science Theatre, audiences will

be asked to help figure out what will happen next in a number of exciting experiments. Meanwhile, in the centre’s planetarium, the ‘Moonstruck’ show will explore the dark side of the Moon. Across the river, BALTIC has a serious pumpkin carving challenge lined up and families are encouraged to dress up in spooky costumes and get creative with their carving. Over three days Level 1 will be transformed into a themed Halloween space full of pumpkins, witches and wizards. Ilaria Longhi, BALTIC’s community programmer, says: “Each year the event gets bigger and this year we are aiming to carve

1500 pumpkins!” The event is part of the Juice Festival for children and young people and takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of half-term from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Over at the Laing, zombies will be invading the normally serene setting of the art gallery for the day. Twelve-to-sixteen-year-olds are invited to work with a professional special effects artist to transform themselves into zombies. Zombie Takeover day is on Thursday 31 October from noon to 3pm. Julie Milne, chief curator at the Laing, says: “Visitors to the Laing Art Gallery on Halloween will need to be prepared to see some unusual sights as our young zombies stagger and drag their way through the gallery.” At the Hatton Gallery in The Quadrangle at Newcastle University, children will be going starry-eyed at the Moon and Stars art workshops. Children can make a mask based on the theme of the moon and stars on 28 October from 10.30am to noon and 31 October from 10am to 11.30am. In between on 29 October, from 11am to 12.30pm, young people can show off their artistic flair with a tutored drawing workshop for twelve-to-eighteen-year-olds using charcoal and pastels.Kids looking to shake a leg should hot foot it down to Dance City. From 9am to 5pm on Monday to Thursday the venue will be running a fun-filled series of street dance and musical theatre events

GRAINGER MARKET FESTIVALTake a saunter down memory lane at the splendid Grainger Market when the indoor shopping emporium hosts a 1950s-style week-long festival in half-term.Folk visiting the market for their fresh fruit and veg and haberdashery bits and bobs can catch a glimpse of life in bygone days. And a 1950s caravan and buses will be parked up on Grainger Street in keeping with the theme.Built in 1835, the Grade I listed building is home to this absolute gem of a market, selling everything from meat and fish to handmade crafts and hardware as well as having characterful cafes galore. It is also home to Marks and Spencer’s Original Penny Bazaar, the world’s smallest M&S store. The Grainger Market October Festival kicks off on Monday 28 October with an event themed, At Home in the 1950s, involving Beamish curators and Beamish Youth Club. There will be a set design erected with 1950s furniture and appliances

including a record player. Members of the youth club will also come along in costume and play with toys from the era. On Tuesday Newcastle United Foundation will be bringing history to life through football with fascinating photos of the team from the 1950s.Children’s activities, a face painter and street science are planned for the Wednesday.

Thursday of that week will be devoted to 1950s fashion

and make-up, with mannequins kitted out in the outfits of the day and fashion pages from women’s magazines on display. Watch out

for chisel-chinned men posing in

chunky knits. On Friday 1 November why

not get into the swing of the action with a 1950s tea dance? While on Saturday there will be a make and mend market with handcrafted and up-cycled items for sale including textiles, ink illustrations, soy candles, comics, stationery, cards and jewellery.

I DESPAIR SOMETIMES, I REALLY DO

TONY JAMESONTHE STAND COMEDIAN

What the hell am I gonna write about now?As the dust has finally settled on the Edinburgh Festival, us comedians are in reflective mood. Did it go well? Who can I blame for the fact I didn’t get a slot on Russell Howard’s Good News? How much debt have I accrued? How many more Twitter followers have I got? While I can’t answer these questions right now, there is another, more pressing matter I need to address.Last week I got asked to write a piece for a ‘lads’ mag’. Now, I don’t read these sorts of magazines (I’m not sure if ‘read’ is the correct verb here or not), but I was pretty sure I knew that the content had to be suitably limited in order to appeal to their readership. What I wasn’t expecting, was to have my article sent back three times for being ‘too wordy’. What I had written wasn’t particularly profound, thought-provoking, or of the level expected from a thesis, but it was still too much for them. In hindsight, I should’ve just written the word ‘boobs’ and drawn a big willy.I guess it’s also unfair of me to suggest that the people who read these magazines would find grammar taxing. However, I think I met someone recently, whom I firmly believe would probably read this sort of publication. It was after a gig, and I got chatting to this lad, who seemed canny enough. However, I couldn’t help but notice that he had a cast on his right hand (something that would probably ruin his enjoyment of lads’ mags, ironically). I asked him how he ended up with the cast, expecting him to say he’d fallen out of a tree trying to get some conkers. Instead, he told me that he’d broken his wrist punching one of those machines in a takeaway trying to win a free garlic bread! I despair sometimes, I really do.You can follow more things I find troubling on Twitter: @tonyjameson

For 75 years the Tyneside Cinema has been right at the cultural heart of the city. From the vital screenings of newsreels in its formative years, right up to the extensive modernisation work that was completed in 2008, it remains to this day Newcastle’s only full-time independent cinema. Now, though, its been presented with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to give

itself a badly needed frontage on Pilgrim Street by taking over the empty shop downstairs and doing something wonderful with it.The plans are to turn the former site of a Barclays bank into a haven for cinema-lovers, with its own cabaret-style secret cinema and a brand new bar and restaurant – painstakingly restoring the plywood

and plastic ceilings to their former architectural glory in the process. The existing bar can then be turned into a visual art gallery and 40-seater cinema screen. This might be one of the most exciting new projects in the city, and the target of £1.3million is a tantalising £100,000 away. With funding for charities and the arts harder to come by than ever, the cinema has turned to the public to help get it over the line and there are a number of different ways you can help.

Alphabetti Spaghetti, not the tinned variety coated in tomato sauce, but rather a writing theatre company, has received Arts Council funding to run a new performance venue in the city – Upstairs At The Dog & Parrot in Clayton Road. Alphabetti Spaghetti Theatre now has residency in the 50-seater multi-performance space. Its second season, The Brolly Season, has just launched, and will run until 18 December. Artistic director Ali Pritchard, pictured, says it is the first venue of its kind in the city, dedicated to supporting emerging talent - providing a professional and affordable space for upcoming artists to perform. The Brolly Season includes 13 theatre productions, two of which come from Alphabetti Spaghetti Theatre, music gigs featuring an eclectic mix of genres and a poetry jam with eight local poets as well as the venue’s regular Saturday night music, Tuesday comedy club and free fortnightly open stage.

CHEF KENNY ATKINSON SAVOURS NEW RESTAURANT VENTURE

City diners can savour the culinary genius of Michelin-starred chef Kenny Atkinson with the news that his hotly-anticipated new Quayside restaurant will be opening soon.Newcastle-born Kenny, 36, who has won two coveted Michelin stars in a glittering career, one whilst at Seaham Hall in County Durham, is excited about having his own place. It will be called Kenny Atkinson House of Tides and will occupy the ground floor and first floor of a characterful five-storey Grade 1 listed former merchant town house, dating back to the 16th Century. Known as Buttress at The Close it is situated next door to The Cooperage.Kenny, who previously held the post of director of food at five-star Rockliffe Hall, near Darlington, says he hopes to help enhance the foodie offerings in Newcastle. He is also upfront about chasing a Michelin star, seen as the Oscars of the foodie world.“A Michelin star is the ultimate

accolade, a chef ’s dream. I’ve tasted that success twice before and it would be a dream come true if we could achieve a star not just for our restaurant, but for Newcastle too. “Newcastle’s food scene is becoming more exciting and diverse. We already have some great restaurants like Café 21, Broad Chare, Jesmond Dene House, Caffe Vivo and Bridge Tavern, and there are more on the way.“At House of Tides we will be offering stripped-back fine dining. I will be sticking to modern British food, quality produce and local sourcing, but the service will be very friendly and the setting relaxed, not at all stuffy. We want our guests to have fun.”

Kenny will be offering his six and eight-course tasting menus, too, but at keenly competitive prices. He says he hopes to be open before January, but adds: “Because the building is Grade 1 listed and one of the oldest in Newcastle, it is taking longer than planned. We have had to make sure all applications and listed buildings consent were done correctly in order to satisfy English Heritage. “It’s fantastic inside with bags of history and character and original flagstone flooring and wooden beams. The ground floor will be a bar area and the first floor dining and we’ll have about 55 covers.”
