December 2016 For Employees of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools O Happy Holidays to all of you! ne of our most foundational core values involves being student-centered. At this special time of year, I am mindful of our purpose for existing as a school district—the children. Amidst all of the hustle and bustle, the twinkling lights, and the joyous sounds, I am keenly aware that we need to stay focused on our students. While we hold one another accountable for our adult impact on student outcomes, we need to practice a generosity of spirit that allows each of us to experience success and pride in what we do. I am so heartened by the awe-inspiring support of our community that demonstrates a commitment to its youngest members in so many powerful ways. I am encouraged by our efforts to increase opportu- nities for pre-kindergarten students, and I was overwhelmed by the community support for our bond referendum. Sometimes it is too easy to let stress and anxiety influence our decisions. I encourage you to take some time for yourself, to enjoy time with friends and family, to rest and re-energize yourself during the upcoming break. We have difficult work ahead of us; however, we are strongly committed to our goals and our strate- gies for improvement. Let’s all look forward to the possibilities that a new year brings! Sincerely, Beverly Emory Superintendent

Happy Holidays to all of you!

ne of our most foundational core values involves being student-centered.

I am encouraged by our efforts to increase opportu-nities for pre-kindergarten students, and I was overwhelmed by the community support for our bond referendum.

Sometimes it is too easy to let stress and anxiety influence our decisions. I encourage you to take some time for yourself, to enjoy time with friends and family, to rest and re-energize yourself during the upcoming break.

We have difficult work ahead of us; however, we are strongly committed to our goals and our strate-gies for improvement. Let’s all look forward to the possibilities that a new year brings!

Sincerely,

Beverly Emory

or more than twenty years, stu-dent artists of the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools have been creating holi-day card designs in their art classes. The designing of cards has become a tradition that students look forward to each year. The card design assignment allows students to experience a real-world design problem. Students must deal with compo-sition, symbolism, and mood. In addition, they develop skills in creating artwork suitable for print and must meet deadlines. Each year, the designs get stronger, mak-ing the selection process more and more challenging. Over five hundred cards were submitted this year. The top 100 holiday cards includ-ing the ones in this publication are all on display through December 18 at the Delta Arts Center for an exhibition sponsored by The Links, Inc.
