SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS FOR THE TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Doing the will of the Father” is a recurring theme in the Gospel according to Matthew. It is the gauge of our relationship with Jesus: “For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother” (Matthew 12:50). It is the criterion by which people will be judged worthy of entering the Kingdom of Heaven. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). By means of the parable in today’s Gospel reading, Jesus had the chief priests and elders—the leaders of the people—pass judgment on themselves. Interestingly, the point of reference is not Jesus’ preaching, but the preaching of John the Baptist. The context of today’s Gospel story is significant. It takes place in Jerusalem, in the final week of Jesus’ life. Earlier in chapter 21, Matthew recounts Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and his cleansing of the Temple. The chief priests and scribes are “indignant” when the people acclaim Jesus as the “Son of David” - a title with clear messianic overtones (21:15). This reading is part of a tense discussion with the chief priests and elders about Jesus’ authority that begins in verse 23. It is here that Jesus first brings up their refusal to believe John the Baptist. At the time John was baptizing, “Jerusalem, all Judea and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized … as they acknowledged their sins,” but the Pharisees and Sadducees were notable exceptions (3:5-10). They would not recognize “the way of righteousness” John preached. Tax collectors, scorned as agents of the Roman government, and prostitutes, notorious sinners, did recognize it. They are the ones who did the will of the Father and produced good fruit as evidence of their repentance. Our response can be no less.

COME BACK TO CHURCH Have you started to come back to Church yet since Covid-19? Some have and some have not. We just want to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe. The diocesan guidelines requires:

Everyone wear a mask -The priest and Lector are not required to wear a mask while in the sanctuary. Try to keep about 6 feet between you and the person or family next to, in front of, or behind you. Ministers of Hospitality are at each Mass to remind people to socially distance if they are too close. People are to receive Communion in their hand, and then lower their mask to put it in their mouth. The Church, Hall or meeting rooms are sanitized after each use. The priest, deacon and Extraordinary Minister are to wear masks when distributing Communion.

We have sanitizer right next to the Communion station in case we make contact with you.

If you are still truly afraid to go out of your house, the bishop’s dispensation still applies and you are encouraged to watch Mass on line or on the TV. If you are ready to start getting back to the new normal, we encourage you to come to one of regular weekend Masses. Please also consider that you could come to daily Mass, as there are fewer people than at our Weekend Masses. This give you the chance to receive Communion if you have not been receiving it. Please always check the daily Mass schedule in the bulletin as it occasionally changes.
