STEPHEN MINISTRY

Love One Another as I Have Loved You . . In John 15:12, Jesus says, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Loving and caring for one another is not just the pastor’s job—it’s something Jesus calls us all to do! Stephen Ministry is a ministry in which people with special gifts for caring ministry can put those gifts to use in an organized way, bringing Jesus’ love and care to those who most need it.

If you know someone who is going through a difficult time, contact one of our Stephen Leaders (Jan Hunt 210-325-3573, Wendy

Schneider 512-431-8594 or Sandy Hartman 830-625-8623) about Stephen

Ministry. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide focused, confidential, one-to-one

Christian care—to help that person experience the healing power of Christ’s love.

SLEEP: Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant (such as a car crash), or it can harm you over time in the form of some chronic health problems. It also can affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others.

Healthy Brain Function and Emotional Well-Being: Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you're sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. It's forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Studies show that a good night's sleep improves learning. Whether you're learning math, how to play the piano, how to perfect your golf swing, or how to drive a car, sleep helps enhance your learning and problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps you pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Physical Health: Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Sleep helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that make you feel hungry (ghrelin) or full (leptin). When you don't get enough sleep, your level of ghrelin goes up and your level of leptin goes down. This makes you feel hungrier than when you're well-rested. Sleep also affects how your body reacts to insulin, the hormone that controls your blood glucose (sugar) level. Sleep deficiency results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes. Sleep also supports healthy growth and development. Deep sleep triggers the body to release the hormone that promotes normal growth in children and teens. This hormone also boosts muscle mass and helps repair cells and tissues in children, teens, and adults. Sleep also plays a role in puberty and fertility. Your immune system relies on sleep to stay healthy. This system defends your body against foreign or harmful substances. Ongoing sleep deficiency can change the way in which your immune system responds. For example, if you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble fighting common infections. Sleep Deprivation: Studies also show that sleep deficiency alters activity in some parts of the brain. If you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior, and coping with change. Sleep deficiency also has been linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior. Children and teens who are sleep deficient may have problems getting along with others. They may feel angry and impulsive, have mood swings, feel sad or depressed, or lack motivation. They also may have problems paying attention, and they may get lower grades and feel stressed. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. MISSIONS

FUMCNB Supports Missionaries in Panama Did you know our church, through the Missions Committee, donates funds to support missionaries in Panama? The missionaries we support are establishing a new community of faith in Santiago de Veraguas (in an area called Punta Delgadita in central Panama) to bridge the two existing Methodist districts at the geographical extremes of the country (under the auspices of the Evangelical Methodist Church of Panama). Rev. David Ceballos, Ph.D., a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of the UMC, pictured below, provides leadership in evangelism, education, and social outreach for a new church congregation. Part of this effort is the construction of a multi-purpose building that will serve as a worship area and as a community building for the poor rural communities around Punta Delgadita. It has about 40 members in an area where there are few Protestants and maintains an average attendance of 65 faithful congregants. Rev. David Ceballos, Ph.D. Cindy Ceballos David dreams of building a sanctuary and a multipurpose center for educational, vocational and health programs for adults and youth. David says: "My call to mission came through participation in several Volunteers-in-Mission trips. I came to the realization that I could be most effective in cross-cultural ministry. I also came to the conviction that I would rather utilize my grace gifts where there is not an abundance of Christian resources." He earned a B.A. in political science at Pan American University, two master's degrees (theology and religious education) from Southwestern Seminary and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership at Northcentral University. David and Cindy are the parents of six adult children: Tanji, Randall, Sasha, Mike, Sophia, and Gabriel. Cynthia Ceballos Cynthia D. (Cindy) Ceballos (pictured above) is also a missionary serving since early 2012 as community health coordinator for the emerging church in Punta Delgadita. A nurse, she looks forward to the growth of the church and supporting ministries in health and education, as well as evangelism. Cindy explains that her efforts to build a career in the secular world became empty and unfulfilling. She said: “God began to show me that I could use my grace gifts in building God's kingdom, the only way to fill the void." Born in New Mexico, Cindy earned her nursing diploma in Lubbock, Texas and BS in nursing from Lubbock Christian University. She worked in cardiac and diabetes care, and then for a pharmaceutical company, before beginning her service in mission. Her church membership is with Amherst United Methodist Church in Amherst, Texas. Updates on Their Work A “Clinic in a Can” donated by FUMC Duncanville, TX was set up for use by the numerous medical teams that visit each year. They also raised sufficient funds to purchase several vehicles to aid in their work and are trying to raise funds to complete the first floor of their multipurpose building this year. They are asking organizations and individuals to adopt items needed, such as: stoves, toilets, sinks, etc. They have listed items needed (with their prices) on their web site at www.missionpanama.com.
