Hello Members!

Here’s a reminder about the State Membership Program !

We have already launched the 2016-17 Florida State Elks Associa on Member-ship Incen ve Program where our Lodge and District can win! Be a PROPOSER and help our Lodge and District grow their membership and win! The state will be awarding $20,000 by Divisions and District prizes!

This is for new and reinstated members from April 1st, 2016 to March 31st, 2017. All membership totals will be verifi ed by the CLMS program a er the close of the Elk year. Transfers do not qualify for the incen ve program.

As our new state president, John Harris’s mo o of “Blast Elkdom into the Future”, I’m asking every Elk in our lodge to set a goal, and propose 2 new members! Together we can BLAST our membership growth to a posi ve this year, and for years to come, so we are around for a long me for our communi es, our youth and especially our Veterans!

ANY MEMBERS WHO HAVE NOT PAID THIS YEARS’ DUES—IT’S NOT TOO LATE! Just send your dues into the offi ce. Call me if you have any ques ons.

God Bless America!

Lodge 2193 Secretary

FUN AND INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THE BPOE:

ELEVEN O’CLOCK TOAST

Regular meetings of Subordinate Lodges have always been held at night. In the earlier days they were usually held on Sunday nights and were con-cluded about eleven o’clock. As the participants departed, they naturally made inquiries about the absentees and expressed sympathetic interest in the causes of their absence. It soon became a custom for some member to propose a toast to the brothers who were not present. And in the course of time this custom was quite generally observed when-ever a group of Elks were together at eleven o’clock.

Eventually the Grand Lodge specifi cally provided for such a ceremonial to be observed during Lodge sessions; and designated it as “The Eleven o’clock Toast.” Under this provision, whenever a Lodge is in session at that hour, the regular order of business is suspended for a few moments while the Exalted Ruler recites the beautiful ritual pre-scribed, concluding with the words: “To our absent Brothers.”

Upon other strictly fraternal occasions this “golden hour of recollection” is generally observed in somewhat the same manner. A designated brother, with or without a few preliminary remarks, proposes the toast, to which all members respond with the words: “To our absent Brothers.” Even when small groups of Elks are together at this hour, al-though it is not a formal fraternal occasion, it is not inappropriate to recall the sentiment with a moment of dignifi ed silence.

The ceremonial is a very effective one, distinctively associated with the Order of Elks. The sentiment it embodies is wholesome and commendable; and it is, therefore, obvi-ous that the designed effect should not be marred by any lack of dignity or decorum; and that it should never be cheapened by observance in inappropriate surroundings.
