The Ohio Scholars' Association Leadership Conference
By Zachary Zader
Last Friday, November the 15th, The Ohio Scholars'
Association (OSA) held its annual leadership conference.
The conference was held at Gilead Christian School. The
focus of this year's conference was on the "four
temperaments of man." This is an ancient theory developed
by Hippocrates, which, in an attempt to explain different
personalities of people, theorized that men had four
different temperaments, each corresponding to an excess of
a particular fluid in the body.
The four temperaments described by Hippocrates
are Choleric (driven), Sanguine (extroverted and social),
Melancholy (creative), and Phlegmatic logical). Before the
conference, all of the OSA members were asked to take a
survey to determine which temperament they had. Once
the meeting began, the students were divided up into
groups based on their temperaments.
The main event of the conference was a race
through eight different activities; these included charades,
writing a motivational speech in 5 minutes, making your
way through a minefield, and an egg drop competition. The
goal of these various activities was to help the participants
understand their type of leadership when it came to
different situations. After the various activities were
completed, the group broke for lunch. Following lunch,
students were treated to a lecture on the problem-solving
method, developed by American executive Alex Osborn.
After the talk, members were broken into groups and
tasked with solving different school-related problems.
There was a group that tackled school-wide issues such as
stress levels, as well as groups dealing with matters in
FFA, band, student council, and others.
After the conference concluded, everyone went
away with a better understanding of their individual
leadership style, which will help them in their future
endeavors.
Operation Christmas Child
By Tori Griffin
Christmas is an exciting time of the year full of
fun, faith, and, most importantly, family. For many years
children and adults around the world get excited for this
one magical day, eager to see what gifts they will receive
from loved ones but what about children that won't get
anything for Christmas?
To eliminate this problem, many organizations
have fundraisers and charities to give gifts to those in
need. A popular one is Operation Christmas Child, a
group that gathers small, simple gifts and personal care
items for millions of children in situations where they
will get nothing for Christmas. Once these items are
collected, they are put in shoe boxes and sent off in large
shipments to where they are needed worldwide. This has
been happening since the start in 1993. Since then, they
have sent out 135 million boxes!
This year our school again partnered with Gilead
Friends Church to take part in the Operation Christmas
Child's mission. Earlier this month, our high schoolers
went to the Mount Gilead shopping plaza and using their
own money bought items to be included in the boxes.
Once back at school, they sorted the gifts into appropriate
categories for packing later. Then on November 12th,
after lunch, the students helped the church pack the
shoeboxes. The event organizer, Patty Levering, said, "It's
great to see all you kids take your own money and use it
on people who really need it." We packed a total of 91
gifts! These boxes will make a lot of kids happy this
Christmas season, and by doing just some simple
shopping and packing make a big difference in some kids
this Christmas.
Our lost and found box at North Campus has several
items left behind. If you think your child/children may
have left something, please check the box located in the
back hallway next to the cafeteria. Thank you
