There was a recent incident in LaPaloma which serves now as a reminder to ALL community dog owners. The incident involved a dog owner walking her dog on a leash that was attacked by a larger “unleashed” dog. PLEASE keep your dogs on leashes. Going forward, violators will be re-ported to the County. It is not only a community restriction, but a County Ordinance as well.

Reminder to Dog Owners

Page 3: Happy Thanksgiving!s3.amazonaws.com/villagescypresscreek/newsletter/fall_2017.pdf · In early September, Hurricane Irma, a Cape Verde-type hurricane, became the first Category 5 hurricane

While the official end of the Atlantic hurricane season is November 30th, the chance of any tropical storms developing at this point and hitting the United States is very low. Great news! The 2017Atlantic hurricane season has been hyperactive, featuring both the highest total accumulated cyclone ener-gy (ACE) and the highest number of major hurricanes since the 2005 season.

So far this season had the greatest number of consecutive hurricanes in the satellite era, with Franklin through Ophelia all reaching winds of at least 75 mph (120 km/h).

In addition, it has, thus far, been a very destructive season: the most destructive season on record, in fact, with a prelimi-nary total of over $316.36 billion (USD) in damages, nearly all of which was due to three of the major hurricanes of the season — Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

This season is also one of only six years on record to feature multiple Category 5 hurricanes. Irma's landfalls on multi-ple Caribbean islands and Maria's landfall on Dominica make 2017 the second season on record (after 2007) to feature two hurricanes making landfall at Category 5 intensity. In addition, Irma was the strongest hurricane ever recorded to form in the Atlantic Ocean outside of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. This season is the only season on record in which three hurricanes each had an ACE of over 40: Irma, Jose, and Maria.

The season officially began on June 1st and, as mentioned earlier, will end on November 30th. These dates historically describe the period of year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin and are adopted by convention.

However, as shown by Tropical Storm Arlene in April, the formation of tropical cyclones is possible at other times of the year. Arlene also marked 2017 the third consecutive year to feature a pre-season storm. In mid-June, Tropical Storm Bret struck the island of Trinidad, which is only rarely struck by tropical cyclones due to its low latitude. A few days later, Tropical Storm Cindy struck the state of Louisiana. In late August, Hurricane Harvey became the first major hurri-cane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, while also setting the record for the costliest tropical cyclone on record, as well as the most rainfall dropped by a tropical cyclone in the US.

In early September, Hurricane Irma, a Cape Verde-type hurricane, became the first Category 5 hurricane to impact the northern Leeward Islands on record, as well as equaling the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in the Atlantic ba-sin—the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. With Hurricane Maria striking Puerto Rico as a high-end Category 4, the season was the first on record to feature three Atlantic hurricanes making landfall anywhere in the United States or one of its territories at Category 4 intensity or stronger.

The season also featured the fastest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Gulf of Mexico (Nate). This was the first sea-son to have three hurricanes make landfall in the mainland United States (Harvey, Irma, and Nate) since 2008, and the first season to feature four hurricanes making landfall in the overall United States (Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate) since 2005. The season also featured Ophelia, the easternmost major hurricane in the basin on record, which later be-came the costliest hurricane to affect the United Kingdom and Ireland in history. Indeed, this season won’t end too soon!

As the 2017 Hurricane Season is Coming to an End …..

Peter Byrnes (LaPaloma) is researching several different types of storm shutters for possible installation before the 2018 hurricane season. He is willing to work with homeowners who may wish to add their names to “the list” so that we may achieve a group discount. Peter will be looking at various different styles of shutters, including metal, fabric and polycarbonate. It should also be noted that the purchase of certain certified shutters will mean discounts on homeowners insurance. Residents who are interested in joining him in receiving group quotations for future installa-

tion, please contact him directly by email: [email protected].

All that being said ……..

Cypress Village Boulevard Traffic As we all know, traffic has increased in number AND speed on Cypress Village Boulevard.

As you may or may not know, a Traffic Study was completed by the County in 2015 and at that time, the County deemed it was not necessary to do anything more than putting up road signs warning drivers of Ventana Drive entrance/exit.

Recently another attempt was initiated by a resident to petition the County to request that yet another traffic study be conducted in light of the many changes since that Study in 2015. And basically, what the resident found out was that the best way at this time to appeal to the County is through our Dis-trict County Commissioner.

The Zebans Celebrate Their 25th Wedding Anniversary!

Murder Mystery Dinner Show

Pete & Judy Zeban (LaPaloma) ~ we celebrated our 25th Anniversary with a surprise party at our residence in LaPaloma on September 16th! The party was given by Judy’s sons, marking the special event. Approximately 75 peo-ple attended to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon with great food and drink. On September 23rd, we traveled on the largest ship afloat (Harmony of the Seas) to the Caribbean. It marked our 31st

cruise together and we enjoyed the islands in the Caribbean. The Royal Caribbean surprised our special day with our cabin decorated, champagne and chocolate strawberries for this special happening. To top it off, an anniversary party was given to us by Royal Caribbean to our 25th Anniversary with lobster and steak being served. Thanks goes to Royal Caribbean for this SPECIAL offering by their company. ~ Pete Zeban

On Sunday, October 22nd, at the Cypress Creek Golf Club, the first Murder Mystery show of The Villages at Cypress Creek was presented by the WorldWide Marriage Encounter Club. There were 170 people in attendance to solve the mystery ~~“Who Killed the Department Store Santa at Lacey’s Department Store?” Some got it right and others are still trying to figure out their wrong guesses. I want to thank those patrons who gave gifts which numbered 30 that were given away as raffled-off prizes. Also with the fun in hand, I want to thank my co-Chair, Judy (Zeban), and committee members, D.K. Benson (Ventana) and Coleen Laskey, Robin Rose, Tom Rose and Mimi Rose (all from LaPaloma) for their help in presenting this first-time adventure in our community! As Chair, I look forward to putting together more shows at restaurants or facilities and have a fun-filled day! ~ Pete Zeban

The Annual Festival of Trees is Back!

The Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library are gearing up to sponsor the 6th Annual Festival of Trees! NOW through Friday, December 8th, the middle aisle of the Library is transformed into a beautiful season celebration with decorated holiday trees. The Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library are presenting this fundraiser, with pro-ceeds to help fund kids, teen and adult programs at the Library. Proceeds are raised via silent auction bids for purchase of these donated decorated trees. Everyone is invited to view the beautiful trees and wreaths and perhaps make a bid on a favorite!

Bidding will end on Friday, December 8th at 6pm

Announcement of silent auction bid winners is scheduled for 10am on Saturday, December 9th

The Library is Your Holiday Card Connection!

The Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library held their 9th Holiday Student Art Contest ~ and for a 9th year, we had wonderful results! Back in the late summer months, artwork created by local students was entered into the contest. This year the participating schools were Cypress Creek, Reddick and J.Vince Thompson Elemen-tary Schools and BridgePrep Academy in Riverview. We had a total of 315 entries and out of that group, the judges chose 10 winners (see all of the winners on the next page!). The winning artists’ holiday renderings were then beautifully transformed into cards by Ruskin printer, M&M Printing Company, Inc. Cards are now on sale at the Library (a pack of 10 cards for $5) and proceeds from the sale of the cards will be used to help supplement the cost of various Library programs offered to the public. Cards can also be purchased from Tom/Mimi Rose 633.0677. Help us spread the Joy!

Economic Forum for the Month of December ~ Golf Cart Safety!

The holiday season is upon us. And, typically this is prime time for the “bad guys”! Thefts and burglaries increase dur-ing this time as we are more hurried, harried and distracted. Here are simple tips for safe holiday shopping: >>> As purse snatchings are most common this time of year, try to go without a purse at all. Keep wallet contents in a zipped or buttoned pocket. If you must carry a purse, use one that can be strapped tightly and worn on the front.

>>> Stay aware while leaving your locked car and returning. Thieves may follow you, looking for an opportunity to strike. If possible, shop with a buddy. If you must shop alone, especially at night, and you feel uneasy about walking to your car, request that a store employee escort you to your vehicle (Beall’s Department Store has been offering this ser-vice for years).

>>> If at all possible, do not make multiple trips to the car with gifts/packages. Thieves will often follow a shopper out, wait for them to go back into the store and then break into the car to steal the items. If you need to keep packages in the car, cover them up. Some thieves will break into vehicles for the packages which are visible from outside the car. When arriving back home, check your mirrors before exiting your vehicle, and look around as you are getting into your car to get your bags out. Too often we can be distracted by the phone or just lost in our thoughts during this time of year ~ makes us easy marks for thieves.

So, follow these safety tips, be aware of your surroundings. On behalf of all of the Security Committee Members, have a happy and safe holiday season with family and friends!
