letter fromthe director

Dear Friendsof Happy Trails,

2015 is the 15 year anniversary ofthe creation of Happy Trails. Serving 15years as a non-profit organization in theanimal rescue business is nothing tosneeze at.

The growth and expansion ofHappy Trails as an organization isknown as progress. However, withprogress comes challenges and newobstacles to overcome. It is a constantlearning curve with glitches and bumpsin the road. However, those glitchesoften fine-tune us and help us strive tobe the best we can be. Growing painsinclude finding the right, experiencedpeople for the right staffing needs;coming up with new systems, policiesand procedures; arranging for care andmaintenance of new property; all whilebeing budget conscious and goodstewards of our funding. Sometimes welearn by trial and error. Most of the timewe try our very best to learn from ourmentors, the larger and more estab-lished animal sanctuaries and welfareorganizations. Their experience, mentorship and guidance is invaluable.Happy Trails has the advice anddirection of those we strive to be likeacross the country, and we realize whata unique opportunity that is for us.

Over the past 15 years, manydedicated supporters have watched thesanctuary grown and prosper, andcontinue to be amazed at the work weaccomplish, the services we provide, and the lives we touch with the re-sources available to us. You, our donors

Idon’t know if we will ever be perfect, butI can assure you that we do try veryhard and accomplish a great with theresources, both financial and human, that we have to work with. Often the rescued animals touchour lives and find a special place inour hearts. It doesn’t matter howbig or small, furry or feathered, friendly or grumpy, they work theirmagic and we are hooked.

Recently we lost a very speciallittle lady by the name of Ellen. Shecame from a hideous situation of

neglect inColumbianaCounty. Thisfrail sweet-heart thor-oughlyenjoyed herlife at HappyTrails takingsunbaths, napping withfriends, andgetting hugsfrom herhumancompanions.

She wouldlet visitors and volunteers alikesimply pick her up, hold her andenjoy her good energy. She lovedpeople and was very much loved inturn.

Here is a tribute by Happy Trailstour guide, Ilona Urban, for thesweet little hen who was de-beakedat some point in her life.

“I’ll always remember the

beautiful summer day when Annette

and Ashley and I sat under the tree

in the yard and ate our usual

healthy lunch of cookies and chips

left over from the Open House. Ellen

joined us on the table and we all fed

her little bits of food and took turns

holding her and loving her. I cannot

count how many lives she must have

touched in her time with us. She was

the ‘go-to-girl’ on tours as she

waited so politely to be picked up

and seemed to love the attention

everyone gave her. I am sure she

has changed more than a few minds

on what a chicken is. They are not a

meal or a nugget but living breath-

ing animals with personalities and

feelings. Our sweet Ellen was all

that and more. Enjoy the spirit

world my dear friend. I know she is

pecking the ground with a whole

beak and scooping up goodies she

could only dream of before. Ellen,

you were so loved!”

A Variety of Internshipsat Happy Trails ProvideOpportunities for Students

Tammy Lepley, a student atMt. Union College, will be gradu-ating in 2015 with a Major inCriminal Justice and a minor inPsychology and Sociology.

One of her internship experi-ences included working withHappy Trails Director, AnnetteFisher, to put together a trainingpresentation to provide lawenforcement officers with infor-mation that would help them tosuccessfully handle farm animalabuse cases.

Tammy, a former policeofficer for Marlboro Townshipand a staff member of thesecurity force for Mt. UnionCollege, had the opportunity toparticipate in an animal rescueand cockfighting raid during herinternship, was able to take andcomplete Humane Officer

training for Ohio, andtogether withAnnette presented ananimal abuse trainingseminar to a group ofpolice officers fromvarious police depart-ments.

One of Tammy’sfavorite quotes thatshe included in herfinal report is fromMartin Luther King, Jr.— “Never, never be

afraid to do what’sright, especially if thewell-being of a person or animal

is at stake. Society’s punishmentsare small compared to thewounds we inflict on our soul

when we look the other way.”To inquire about internships

Tribute to Zinger

page 8

Every once in a while an animalwho has been an icon at HappyTrails crosses the Rainbow Bridge, illustrating the passing of time andthe ending of yet another era.

Recently Zinger the pot belly pigwas one of those animals. Zingerhad been with us since about 2005or so, and I remember when hecame in. He had been removedfrom a situation of neglect inSouthern Ohio by the Ohio SPCA. Helived outdoors in an area whereflooding had occurred, and his doghouse he had for a shelter hadflooded as well. Zinger’s owner didnot solve the flooding problem, andwith cold weather coming in, thewater in his dog house froze and hehad ice for a floor to lay on. He wasremoved from this situation byhumane officers and eventuallybrought to Happy Trails, where helived out the rest of his life.

There appears to bemore neglected pot bellypigs than there are peoplecoming forward who wantto adopt them. Zinger wasnever chosen by a familyto adopt, and he lived hislife with his other pigfriends at the sanctuary. This past Fall Zinger losthis best pig friend, Willisthe pig. They wereinseparable, and Zingergrieved the passing of hislittle buddy. I believeWillis was waiting forZinger to help him crossthe Rainbow Bridge into aworld where he can nowenjoy cool mud puddles, leisurely naps in the sun,and lots of soft grass to root fortreasures that only pigs know about.

Watching some of the olderanimals who have been with us formany years live out their lives andpass on into the world of the spirithits home and reminds us that time

is going by quickly. I hope Zingerenjoyed his life at the sanctuarywith belly rubs, special treats, andpig friends to snuggle with in thickpiles of hay on cold winter nights.Zinger - we’ll miss you little buddy! And tell Willis we miss him too.

Zinger was known for his impressive mohawk, astripe of hair down his back that was long andthick. This was very unique for a pot belly pig.

Meet Staff Member, Hope Evans

Getting to know Happy Trails

includes getting to know our staff,

volunteers and board members,

and their role in the organization.

Meet Hope Evans, a staff

member who works in marketing

and special promotions and is out

there in the community represent-

ing Happy Trails with requests for

sponsors and donations. Hope is

truly dedicated to the rescued

animals and feels passionately

about the mission of the sanctuary.

When asked what motivates

her in her work Hope said, “I love

being part of such a wonderful

organization because the animals

otherwise do not have a voice.”

If you plan to join us for “A

Night of Hope and Inspiration” on

March 21st and you are in awe of

the amazing raffle items donated

to raise money, Hope is probably

responsible for about 90% of the

items coming in.

Here is a list of some of the

special promotions that Hope is

directly responsible for. If you would

like more information about any of

these areas and would like to get

involved in promoting Happy Trails,

rescued animals!

...And More!

Blanche and DorothyGet Adopted!

Blanche and

Dorothy, two lovely

senior citizen sheep ladies, are getting adopted!

These sweet older girls arrived at Happy Trails from a

hideous neglect situation in Ashtabula County in

2014. Our friends at Lasa Sanctuary, also located in

Ashtabula County, have agreed to adopt these gentle

souls and let them live out their lives in peace and

comfort at their facility. Lasa is a sanctuary who does

not adopt out, but allows the animals to retire at

their sanctuary. While we will all miss Blanche and

Dorothy, our “golden girls”, they are going to have

lush green, spacious pastures and a human family

who will love them more than anything. Many thanks

to our dear friends at Lasa for taking them in! You

will be able to follow Blanche and Dorothy’s story at

Lasa at www.lasasanctuary.org.

By the way, LASA stands for “Love All, Serve All”,

and how beautiful is that?

If You Like Ornery Animals,Adopt Kyle and Renaldo!

Four-year-old Renaldo the sheep (shown below) and his BFFthree-year-old Kyle (show at right) are available for adoption to afamily who has an amazing sense of humor and can be quick to dodgea head butt. OK, so Kyle with his intimidating horns is actually the

friendly guy who lovespeople and enjoys socialinteraction. Renaldo enjoysattention and social interac-tion as well, but probably alittle too much. Renaldowaits until you are notpaying attention then runsup from behind to give youa healthy jolt with his head.He believes he is very funny. Most people who experi-ence this do not find it quiteas funny as he does. Bothmales are castrated (meaning neutered in sheep terminology). They areup-to-date on vaccinations, deworming and hoof trimming. If you can findroom in your heart and barn for these adorable boys (who really are fun to

work with) and you don’t mind a good game of dodge-the-sheep during feeding time, call us for adoption informa-tion at 330-296-5914. The adoption fee for the pair is $150. Read the story of their rescue and the conditions from which

they were removed at http://happytrailsfarm.org/category/adopt-sponsor/goats-sheep/

Jolie andDulce Waitingfor You!These two senior piggies are hoping to find a home together. The two girl friends came from a neglect situation in MedinaCounty, and have worked their way into the hearts of everyvolunteer and staff member at Happy Trails. They are bothvery sweet, extremely loving, and truly the best of friends. Norman (the pink guy on the left)

and Munna, a beautiful “paint”

pig (with splotches of whites and

dark grays and a half-pink nose)

are fun to be around and will

always make you smile. Pigs are

born commedians, and this pair is

always up to something. They are all “personality” and once you get to know them, you will love them. For adoption

information contact Happy Trails at 330-296-5914.

How Can You Resist This Little Face?Hershberger (nicknamed Hershey), with his adorable inquisitive face and

that bad spiked hair-do, is an indoor pig. In fact, he is one of two indoor pigs

available for adoption. He is potty trained and goes outside to go to the

bathroom, therefore requiring a fenced-in yard. Hershey is a little shy with

dogs so he would do best in a no-dog family. However, he tolerates cats. His

favorite things in life include shredding jackets and coats, biting into pop

cans to taste the carbonation and sugar, and training people to rub his belly

when he flops over unexpectedly.

Seriously though, pigs make excellent pets. The only requirement is that

you have to be smarter than the pig. We can help you find out if adopting a

pet pig is right for you. Too many pigs find themselves homeless after

uncsrupulous breeders convince unsuspecting buyers that their pigs will

stay small, and instead they grow up to be...well, a pig. Call Happy Trails for

pig adoption information at 330-296-5914.

Kachina the Horse GetsNew Hoof Extensions

Ornery Kachinais a 7-year-olddwarf mini-horsewho is a perma-nent residentat Happy Trailsand serves asa sanctuaryrepresentativeat communityevents. She cameinto our rescuethrough ourAmish HorseRetirementProgram when she was only 10 weeks old, her bonesnot quite fusing where they were supposed to due toher dwarfism. Throughout the past seven years Kachinahas had all types of hoof care to compensate for theway her hooves grow and the way her ankles turn in.She was able to walk for a short time on her ownhooves, but the stability just wasn’t there. Kachina isonce again getting hoof extensions at the EquineSpecialty Hospital thanks to hoof injury specialist, EdCigany. Ed, a blacksmith specializing in severe hoofinjuries for the hospital, has worked on numerousHappy Trails horses over the years who were sufferingfrom severe neglect or catastrophic injuries. Kachina’shoof extensions enable her to walk as normally aspossible, and in her world, the way she walks is normal. In fact, she was sited running wildly around the yard in

circles at Happy Trails theother day. Though wewill not be able to evercompletely correct hercondition, we can makeher as comfortable aspossible. Kachina willneed her hooves moni-tored, and hoof exten-sions created aboutevery six weeks or so forthe remainder of her life. Each visit costs between$100 and $200.

She is a trouper and agreat little ambassadorfor our nursing home

visitation program, educational programs in schools, and is an icon with visitors and guests.

To help offset the cost of her special hoofextensions to help her walk, tax-deductible donationsearmarked for Kachina, can be sent to Happy Trails,5623 New Milford Road, Ravenna, Ohio 44266.
