southern portion of our great state and make the Happy Trail north.  You’ll find that on page 6 as we started with one of the most famous towns here!   There’s just no way to fill y’all in on all that’s available here.  There aren’t enough news‐letters between now and September 2011, but you can check out a great site, www.arizonaguide.com.   It has beautiful pictures and a lot more information than is available in the Epitaph.     Yer gonna have more fun than hog‐tyin’ a calf!  So sit back, grab a cuppa joe and enjoy this issue of the Epitaph! 

H owdy Pardners!  Ya know, there’s just so much to do here in Arizona, so much fun to be had, that it’s hard to know exactly where to begin.     There’s the historical sites and mining towns,  and then there’s ghost towns with more ghosts than a Halloween display!    Even though we’re a growing metropolis people still think we have outlaws running around!  But we do have culture,  great Indian and western art, the symphony and theater.  We also have great adventure things like river rafting, back‐packing and hiking, jeep tours to those hard‐to‐reach places, not to  mention fishing and hunting.  There are many lakes around here (yes, we have lots of water in the desert!) complete with renta boats and jet ski’s to go out on or hop on a paddle‐wheel boat for a leisurely ride around one of our scenic lakes.     We’ve got pine country, Indian ruins and trains (both the working kind and the museums) and shopping (outlet stores, Indian jewelry, western memorabilia, 

boutiques and of course Department 56 stores!) and we are a golf mecca!  Did you know there are more than 300 golf courses in Arizona?     There’s race car driving and dude ranches complete with horseback riding and shooting and branding, there’s the Desert Sonoran Museum, the Phoenix Botanical Gardens, the zoo and wow!  The list is longer than a cattle drive! Whatever yer pleasure – you’ll probably find it here!   The Posse is working hard to bring you the fun, flavor and excitement that not only Arizona has to offer, but that we are going to offer at the Happy Trails to Arizona gathering as well.  Just to give you an idea, I asked the Posse to saddle up—and look—they took me literally!   I’m as sure as the sun shines here, that this gathering is bringing out the little kid in all of us!  So we’ll start the stagecoach in the

E very great Marshal in history has had a sure‐fire, Ace High, badge‐wearin’, gun‐slinging, sharp‐shootin’ bunch o’ deputies to get the job done!  I am just plum tickled to have the greatest bunch of hands to put on a Gathering this side of the Pecos!  You’ll see some of them in Livonia as we take the Happy Trails to see all of them fine folk at their gathering, while we leave some behind to tend to the doin’s at the Circle 56 Ranch!  We’ll introduce you to them a bit at a time, and you can also find them listed on our website!

General Store Keeper (Vendors) Deputy Leigh Gieringer  Leigh’s been collecting Department 56 villages since 1988 with the purchase of the original Old Curiosity Shop.  At that point, it was pretty much in control until she became a charter member of Village Addicts Anonymous in the early 1990s when she lived in Southern California.  It was downhill from there.  She used to be able to say that she collected anything that was not shiny, however the intriguing Halloween Village ended that.  When she moved to the Phoenix area, she joined the Southwest Villagers Collector's Club.  Leigh became the Village Chronicle's Alpine Village feature article writer in the early 1990s, wrote her first display book ‐ Village Display Tips ‐ a few years later.  She’s currently a feature writer for Village D'Lights and Village D'Tails; has written four village display books (with a new one in the works) and co‐produced five DVDs on the subject.  Stay tuned for the next projects. She’s currently working on other display resources for village collectors.  

Merchandise Deputy Vanessa Taylor  Vanessa is an Information Technologist Specialist for the State of Arizona.  She’s been married for 29 years to her beloved husband Monroe, who is her structural engineer, electrician, and second set of eyes for all of her displays.  She collects Christmas in City, Season Bay, Little Town of Bethlehem, Snow Village, Dickens and other Villages.  

Gathering Program Deputies Ron & Wilma Devlin  Ron and Wilma have been members of the Arizona Village Collectors in Tucson for almost seven  years.   They collect Christmas in the City and Halloween.  Wilma has been an active board member for five years.  They enjoy being part of a club that features their love of Department 56 houses.  They started collecting Department 56 in 1992. They always enjoyed the way the collectable shops celebrated product Introductions and retirements on the first Saturday in November.  It got you in the mood to buy, buy, buy.

Fer the Womenfolk...

I f’n yer heroes have always been cowboys, then you have to visit two places—the one I’m going to tell about here is Tombstone (and is adapted from an article by Danelle Cheney).  The other is about Old Tucson, but we’ll get to that one in another Epitaph.   The gunslingers face each other, sneers crossing their faces. Taunts and threats fly like the black hats and coats of the cowboy rustlers who try to rouse the gunmen across from them – the lawmen and the U.S. Marshall.    Voices get louder, and dusty heat rises on the deserted street. Suddenly the street explodes in a volley of gunfire. Men fall, dead, their bodies twitching in the dirt. The lucky ones re‐holster their 

guns and race away, leaving the dead to the buzzards and eerie silence.      Time freezes for a moment, and the audience disperses, the actors return to bow and pose 

for photos. The crowd returns to the bustling boardwalks of Tombstone, Arizona, filled with museums, tourist shops, costumed cowboys and ladies dressed in 1880s clothing. Tombstone is an hour’s drive south of Tucson, but it’s a whole other world.   Over a century has passed since the gun battle between the infamous Earp and Clanton cowboys on October 26, 1881, at the entrance to the O.K. Corral, a blacksmith shop and livery at that time. The O.K. Corral shootout claims its place as one of the most famous gun battles in Wild West history. U.S. Marshal Virgil Earp and his brothers Wyatt and Morgan along with John “Doc” Holliday (a ruthless gambler emboldened with terminal tuberculosis) faced the notorious outlaws, Ike and Billy Clanton and Tom and Frank McLaury – all suspected cattle rustlers – and their friend Billy Claiborne. Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne fled.   Frank and Tom McLaury died in the shootout, while Virgil and Morgan Earp were wounded. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday fled from town as soon as the dust settled. Although the infamous duel happened over 100 years ago, it is still the talk of Tombstone. They restage the fight for tourists by firing blanks every weekend.   Surrounded by the blazing 

beautiful Sonoran Desert, mining gave Tombstone its start. Prospector Ed Scheifflin discovered silver there in 1877, and staked a mining claim called Tombstone with ironic humor since a soldier weary of fighting the Apache Indians had warned him “all you’ll find in those hills is your tombstone.”   The name of Tombstone remained, and the area lured adventurers from all over the globe. By the early 1880s, Tombstone had a population of 10,000. The silver boom collapsed at the turn of the 20th century, and within 20 years, Tombstone’s boomtown days were over. The town has survived ever since as a tourist mecca and has rightfully earned the slogan “the town too tough to die.”   With a steady population of 1,750, the town has succeeded in drawing 350,000 visitors a year, ranking as the second most popular destination in Arizona next to the Grand Canyon, which draws three to four million people a year.   Much of the excitement over the O.K. Corral comes from the romanticized attention it has received from Hollywood in movies dating back to 1932. Recent movies like Tombstone (1993) starring Kurt Russell, and Wyatt Earp (1994) starring

lighting fixtures that came from a 19th Century whaling ship.    Boothill Cemetery, on the northern end of town, is filled with Tombstone’s infamous dead, like Billy Clanton and Frank and Tom McLaury of the 

O.K. Corral. It’s authentic, even though it appears somewhat phony with the tourist shop entry and freshly painted wooden markers, some that are too clever: “Here lies Lester Moore; 

Four slugs from a .44; no les, no more.”     On the opposite side of town – both morally and geographically – you will find the Bird Cage Theatre, once known as the most wicked place between New Orleans and San Francisco. Booze, prostitution, dancing, poker and casino game tables all contributed to unexpected brawls leading to the bullet holes still in the walls. 

   Whether you're a western history buff or new to this era, the streets of Tombstone offer a unique chance to see and touch an old western mining town as it once may have been.   Remember to stop by the Rose Tree Inn Museum and   Books, the home of the Guinness Book of World Records' largest rose tree.  It is a 119‐year old Lady Banks covering 9,000 square feet!  The rose bush (now a tree) found her way to Tombstone in 1885 as a gift of love to a new and very homesick bride from Scotland. 

Holliday prior to the gunfight.  In Arizona, it is against the law for donkeys to sleep in bathtubs.  The bola tie is the official state neckwear.   Arizona observes Mountain Standard Time on a year round basis. The one exception is the Navajo 

The Arizona trout is found only in the Arizona.  Wyatt Earp was neither the town marshal nor the sheriff in Tombstone, Arizona at the time of the shoot‐out at the O.K. Corral.  His brother Virgil was the town marshal, who had temporarily deputized Wyatt, Morgan and Doc 

Nation, located in the northeast corner of the state, which observes the daylight savings time change.   In Arizona, it is unlawful to refuse a person a glass of water.

Kevin Costner, have presented the legend most realistically, yet not without inaccuracies.    Finding the true gems of Tombstone doesn’t happen without some digging. Without any effort, you’ll easily find Tombstone’s mementos ‐‐ staged gunfights, stagecoach rides, or pretend lynching of tourists on cobbled streets. But it’s worth searching for the town’s authentic western roots.    The 1882 distinctive red‐brick Courthouse, a building on the National Register of Historic Places, has archival records and research materials that you won’t find anywhere else. It features exhibits such as rare documents, diagrams and varied accounts of the O.K. Corral shoot out.  On the second floor of the courthouse, you can enter into a 1880s courtroom and view a gallows restored to its original form.    St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is the oldest Protestant church in Arizona still standing on its earliest site with original stained glass, and elegant 

This 1800s six­passenger Concord Stagecoach at the Tombstone Coffee & Tea Co. was used in a variety of John Wayne and Gene Autry movies like The Lone Ranger, Maverick, Cisco Kid and several Bonanza episodes. 

  We’re roundin’ up some T‐riffic seminars with inventive ideas to make your displays come alive  and we’ll be havin’ those awesome make‐and‐takes!  Of course, there’ll be the opportunity to find that elusive item you’ve been looking for in our General Store (formerly the Vendor Marketplace)!  We’ve done some updating to our website, and we’ll keep filling in the blanks as we lasso the tours, the General Store Keepers (formerly market place vendors), the seminars and define the display contest (one of my personal favorites!).  You’ll want to wander through the Display Contest corral and view the talents of some very creative folks and get great ideas for your next display.  I reckon that’ll do right fine!   In addition, there will also be raffles, drawings, prizes, a few surprises and great entertainment and a chance to give to two great

T hings are going three ways from Sunday (which is western slang for moving quickly) here at the Happy Trails to Arizona Circle 56 Ranch!  Your Happy Trails to Arizona—a Destination Gathering for 2011 Posse is having a rootin’ tootin’  durn fun time putting together this gathering!  These are some hard working hands who are creative and talented and are thinking a bit outside of the corral (or outside the box to you city folk) to bring you a memorable gathering and I’m durn proud to have them as part of the posse.     The Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa is having some fun too and the staff there are real excited to roll out the welcome wagon fer y’all.    I’ve been there a bunch over the past few months, and I have to tell ya – I really do just want to move in and make it my personal homestead!
