**************EDITOR'S COLUMN

The summer months are here and I wonderwhere the past six months have gone. ClubHawthorne has had many improvements this lastseason and next year looks to be just as busy if notbusier.

During the summer months the HawthorneHighlights will take a vacation. There will be no

publication during the months of July and August. Iwould like to encourage all activities to submitarticles for the Highlights. What better way for ourresidents to find out what is going on and who isdoing what. If you have something you would liketo submit, please see Sandy in the Program Office.

Right now I am lookingout my window and taking noteof how many golf carts are nowin Hawthorne. I believe the golfcart population has tripled in thepast two years. Please rememberthat we have plenty of golf cartparking at the clubhouse and askthat all golf cart owners park inthe designated parking places as

well as abide by the rules concerning your golf cart.As the weeks get hotter and hotter,

remember to drink plenty of fluids and stay out ofthe sun during the peak hours of the day.

There is plenty to do in the Clubhouse andwe encourage you to come down and join in thecard games, bingo and whatever else you mightenjoy doing. A good way to keep busy and stay outof the sun! .

YOUTH

Youth is not entirely a time of life -- it is astate of mine. It is not wholly a matter ofripecheeks, red lips or supple knees. It is a temper ofwill, a quality ofthe imagination, vigor oftheemotions.

Nobody grows old by merely living anumber of years. People grow old only by desertingtheir ideals. You are as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fears; as young as yourhope, as old as your despair.

In the central place of every heart, there is arecording chamber; so long as it receives messagesof beauty, hope, cheer and courage, you are young.

When the wires are all down and your heartis covered with the snows of pessimism and the iceof cynicism, then, and only then, have you grownold. - Author unknown.

'TIS THE SEASON

Hurricane Season runs from June 1 throughNovember 30. Although major hurricanes arerelatively rare, they are very dangerous. Learningabout hurricanes, the hurricane warning systems, and planning ahead can reduce your chances ofexperiencing injury or major property damage.

A hurricane watch is issued when there is athreat of hurricane conditions within 24 to 36 hours.A hu"icane warning is issued when hurricaneconditions (winds of74 miles per hour or greater or,dangerously high water and rough seas) areexpected within 24 hours.

During a hurricane warning, you shouldlisten to the radio or television for officialinstructions. It is a good idea to know where theprimary Red Cross Shelter locations are in LadyLake, Fruitland Park and Leesburg. Refer to your"Hurricane Preparedness at Hawthorne" sheets thatwere distributed to each home.

You can get more information from theAmerican Red Cross. "Before the Wind Blows" is ahelpful brochure on hurricane preparedness. Youcan obtain a copy by contacting Florida's Coast toCoast Chapter in Tavares 357-8335.

It is very important that you moveeverything in your yard or carport that is loose ormovable into your shed, utility rooms or house. This is especially important for residents to dobefore you leave your home.

Remember that the Clubhouse is not anapproved shelter. If you are leaving the area, it isbest to depart early to avoid congested traffic on thehighways. Remember to fill out a vacation formand drop it off at the Marina Security Office,Administrative Office or the Program Office beforeleaving.

HAWTHORNE GARDENCLUB

"A BIT OF mSTORY"

The Gardens were established in 1976,through the efforts of the late Gerard Frison and a

few other active gardeners.Amos Henley was theManager then and he,himself: an avid gardener. The gardens are locatedwhere Mr. Henley had agarden plot prior to 1976.The original garden layouthad 74 plots, and there were41 charter members of theoriginal 41 , only one

remains active today. The one still tilling soil isBob Hickey. The balance of the original 41, stilllive in the park, moved away, or departed.

There is a bronze memorial plaque, dedicated to our first gardener. Amos Henley, at thewest entrance to the garden area.

The records are not complete, but theChairmen over the years were:

Gerard Frison -76, 77, 78 and 83Charles Carlson - 79No Record - 80, 82Harold Waterson - 81Peter Darazio - 84Orvel Schmidt - 85, 86, 92 and 93Walter Liphardt - 87,88George Strohsahl - 89, 90Bill Karstetter - 91Bud Frank - 94,95,97, and 2000Jess Murray --96Jim 'BUrks - 98,.99

Since its inception, there have been manychanges. Originally every plot had a chicken wirefence around it to keep out rabbits. Grass or leaveswere used on the pathways to keep down the weeds.Water use was restricted due to the small supplyline. If more than two hoses were on, there was nopressure. Rules or instructions were graduallyest~blished as guide lines for good gardening. Inreview, some are no longer appropriate; however,

many of the rules are as solid today as they wereyears ago.

In 1986, a request was made to have a fenceconstructed around the gardens. It was to be arabbit-proof fence, which it is, unless someoneforgets to close the gate. The fence was completedin 1987.

The gardens took on a new look. No morestakes and chicken wire. New comer posts of PVCwere set up to mark plots. Chips were furnished tomulch pathways. This was a great improvement, both in appearance and maintenance of thewalkways. A new water line was provided for abetter supply of water.

Shortly after the fence, there was amovement to build tennis courts. Also, a gazebowas built between the Tennis Courts and garden. Afew plots were taken from the garden to place thegazebo.

Two electric outlets were installed in thegardens in 1993. A pine tree was removed as votedon by the gardeners. In 1994, posts and hangerswere installed so hoses no longer were left layingon the ground.

In June 1995, the garden group had asuccessful dinner. Profit was used to purchase alightweight tiller. Shelves were installed in thegazebo and the area was cleaned out. In 1996 we,had a spaghetti lunch and the profit was used toreplace some hoses.

In 1999, chicken wire and wood wasinstalled around the bottom of the fence to keeprabbits out.

Since our growing season allows twogardens a year here in central Florida, there isseldom a time when something isn't beingharvested in our gardens at the same time new seedsor bedding plants are being planted. Over the years,Newcomers have put in gardens; some soon quit, and others became ardent gardeners. For those whoare dedicated, there is nothing like getting goodfresh veggies.

Any resident can have a garden plot. If youare interested call Bud Frank, Chairman of theGarden Club, at 360-0269.

ALZHE~ERSUPPORTGROUP

The group of Hawthorne residentswho in 1998 began considering the development ofa support group for caregivers ofpersons withAlzheimer's Disease have continued to seek waysof helping people here in Hawthorne. As we heardcaregivers speak of concern that their loved onesmight become lost, if they ventured outside thehome, we did some study on the problem, readabout programs for "wanderers," and then discussedthe matter with our own Security Department.

As a result, we have obtained wristidentification bracelets of a medical design, andwant these to be used by any resident of Hawthornewho might be in danger of becoming lost. Thebracelet is engraved with a special number, which ison record with Security. The individual's namemay be engraved on it, also. But with the number,Security will be able to identify who the wearer is,and return them to their home, or call theircaregiver.

Two clubs at Hawthorne have contributed tothe cost of the bracelet - Golden 50-80 and QuiltingBees. We are very grateful for this gift; it enablesanyone in need to get a bracelet for their loved one. Please take advantage of this service. It has, ofcourse, the full support of Hawthorne and ourSecurity Department. You may call Lee Braswell,at 728-1713 (after June 15) to make arrangementsabout getting a bracelet or come to a Support GroupMeeting.

Remember, the Support Group meetings arenow being held in the Conference Room (oldLibrary) once a month on the second Friday, at 1:30PM. There will be no meeting in June, but they willresume in July.

The AD. Teams consists of Lee Braswell728-1713, Mary Leonard 787-8309, GailFuller 360-0841, Margaret Bell 323-8003, andBarbara Bauerle 323-8288.

THE CANCELED STAMP STORY FORHABITAT

About seven years ago my neighbors, theLiphardt's, came over-with envelopes and asked meto cut them for Habitat. Mr. and Mrs. Liphardt goto the stamp club in Mt. Dora.

They showed me how I should cut the stampon the envelope, leaving about Y4inch around eachstamp. I then took them to Habitat and was givenmore. We had lots of envelopes when we had thetelephone company. At one time I had about eightor nine girls from Hawthorne helping cut stamps offthe envelopes. Each Tuesday I would go to Habitatand pick up more.

My supervisor for Habitat is Elinor Raitz. She is there every Tuesday, sorting envelopes andstamps.

Eventually I began taking the stamps on thepieces of paper. I had to soak them for some timeso they would slide off the paper. I usually had abowl to put them in and ifwater was cloudy I wouldput them in clean water. At times, I would have upto eight sheets of newspaper on the floor to dry.

Over the years Elinor Raitz, Emma Zaiac, and a few other women made up packages ofstamps and sent them to New York and Arizona. As a result we sold over $21,000 of canceledstamps. So on April 25th a house on GeorgiaAvenue in Leesburg was dedicated to the canceledstamp people.

There are many volunteers in this program, Ihave three, Dottie Kapp, Bill Sommers, and CarlSadowski. Ifyou are interested or would like toknow more about the canceled stamp programplease call Olive Morgan at 787-7765.
