Do you know why I love to live, work and play here? The same reason you picked up this guide and visit HappyValley.com. Like you, I have a special feeling and emotion for this place. But, why?I mean, really…why? Have you ever dug deeply into why Happy Valley holds so much meaning to you? Re-cently, I was sitting in a presentation about the Soul of the Community report, done by the Knight Foundation. Just like it has on many other studies about quality of life, our area scored exceptionally well in every cat-egory. This fall, we were named the third best college town in America and we always do well in just about any survey related to quality of life, retirement destinations, student experiences, and all the things that (we know) make our area so appealing to so many. The presenter on Soul of the Community asked each of us at to write down why we love this area. So I had to dig quickly into my own personal reasons: why I fell in love with this place in 1976 as a college fresh-man and why, as a 54-year-old, my wife Anita and I are raising our three boys here (through high school at least, until they eventually go off to college and med school). The answer that has crystallized for me, personally, is this: Fun with a Purpose. Happy Valley has a true hold on Fun with a Purpose…in offering residents and visitors opportunities to have fun while fulfilling the purpose of learning, community, friend-ship, and meaningful accomplishments. As the older guy that I am now, I notice more and more that the times I enjoy myself the most are the times something bigger than me is happening. Here’s a good example: running the Tussey Moun-tainback 50-mile relay with 5 other old guys, who happen to be my great friends. The running route from the top of Tussey Mountain to Whipple Dam in October offers a view of the most beautiful land-scape, painted in glorious fall colors. Every year the event raises money for a worthwhile local non-profit. And, at the end, my buddies and I get to enjoy local-ly brewed beer at the finish line. You can say the same for the many local 5K and

10K races I enter every year, usually with my family running alongside me.This convergence of fun and purpose is alive and well all over Happy Valley, not just in the running community. Enjoying Lady Li-ons Basketball in the Pink Zone. Enjoying a show at The State Theatre, our only com-munity-owned non-profit performing arts venue. Strolling through the Farmers Market for fresh, local products that drive our agri-cultural community. Watching friends’ and neighbors’ kids in the local youth soccer leagues as they form the player tunnel on Jeffrey Field for the PSU men’s soccer team. These opportunities are endless. For my fellow runners, get ready: next Sep-tember 1, Happy Valley welcomes our first full-marathon to benefit the Mt. Nittany Conservancy, keepers of one of our finest natural treasures.Enjoy our winter guide, which highlights all the wonderful fun here that is available year round. Visit our website when you want to make decisions about your Happy Valley experience. There are so many great restau-rants, attractions, and events to enjoy this winter. Make it a weekend. Here’s a personal recommendation: my wife and I recently enjoyed her birthday at the Gamble Mill, which now crafts its own beer. The Sampler of 6 of their 7 beers is just $10, and you’ll savor every delicious drop. That’s just one of many special places we have to offer.

Carnegie House

Directly accessible to Toftrees golf courses and just a few miles from town, the airport and Beaver Stadium, the Carnegie Inn & Spa is the most elegant destination in the State College area for dining, overnight stays, and spa services. We found, by personal experience, that Carnegie is more than just for special occasions. “You don’t need to wait for an anniversary or special occasion to have one of the best dining, overnight, or spa experiences you’ll have all year,” Pete Weaver, Carnegie’s General Manager, said. “Dining can always be a “special oc-casion.” And there is no reason to wait to have an excellent meal. That’s how we treat each guest visit every day at Carnegie Inn & Spa.” Established in 1994 as an exclusive woodland retreat modeled after Scotland’s grand country inns, Carnegie Inn & Spa reminds one of a subdued country manor. When we had the opportunity to speak with Pietro Pezzella, one of the management staff, he shared, “The design of the library, bar, dining room, and kitchen convey a level of intimacy—when you’re here, you feel at home. We have many repeat overnight and dinner guests that we get to know personally. That personal touch gives Carnegie Inn & Spa something you just can’t find anywhere else.” As a guest at the Carnegie House Restaurant at the Carnegie Inn & Spa, we found that the establishment’s reputation had preceded it. “You are first served your cocktails and some hors d’oeuvres in the library,” a friend told us. Truly, we enjoyed that unique service and much more. The library has a classic atmosphere of quiet, comfortable distinc-tion decked with rich woods, oriental rugs, and comfy leather arm chairs. The seating is strategically positioned in groupings facing quiet nooks, a roaring fire, and French doors that look out onto the veranda. Weaver personally greeted us and led us past the impressive Wine Cellar, featuring 1600 bottles from their extensive wine col-lection, to one of the most charming bar areas imaginable. “This part of the Inn is actually patterned after a pub in The Carnegie Club, a members-only inn and country club west of Dornoch, Scotland,” Weaver said. “They were so impressed with the way we captured the essence of their inn, they made us honorary members. Each month, their award-winning Executive Chef, Lisa Palermo, creates a unique European contemporary menu of items to suit each season. For example, in October there was a wonderful menu with an Oktoberfest flair, featuring wiener schnitzel, pretzel crusted pork chops, sausages, and cider. Another unique feature at Carnegie is that we were escorted from the library and into the dining room when our first course was ready to be served. For our dinner entrees, we had two recom-mended specialties of the house—the Filet Mignon and Chilean Sea Bass, both served over garlic mashed potatoes with braised asparagus. Carnegie is one of the very few restaurants in the central Pennsylvania area that serves a certified black angus steak

and one can taste the difference in quality. For dessert, we ordered cheesecake with raspberry sauce and a chocolate flourless torte complimented with raspberry ice cream. We learned that all desserts are made on the premises, including the delicious ice cream. “The Carnegie House Restaurant is offering more options than ever. We serve breakfast every day and a very popular three course lunch special,” Weaver said. Breakfast starts at 7:00 am seven-days-a-week with superior fare such as a spinach and bacon omelet with Asiago cheese for a rea-sonable price. Overnight guests of the Inn all receive a complimentary, made-to-order breakfast. Lunch is served at 11:00 am on weekdays and currently offers a three-course special for just $14.95. “We provide truly unique, premium corporate events,” Weaver said. “Small groups can bring spouses along and let them spend the day golfing, taking cooking classes, or going to the spa while they work.” Carnegie Inn & Spa currently features 21 large guest rooms ap-pointed with antique furnishings, oriental rugs, deep soaking tubs, and lovely views, as well as fresh cookies throughout. The spa attached to the Inn, ESSpa Kozmetika, was named “The Best Spa in America” by Industry Source. Services include deep Hungarian treatments such as organic facials, massages, wraps and scrubs, and vegan manicures and pedicures. Whether you’re looking for an outstanding meal, a beautiful place to spend the weekend, or world-class spa services, Carnegie Inn & Spa will exceed even the highest expectations. And since they are currently offering a range of packages, why not try all three? A couple’s massage, with gorgeous complimentary roses, followed by a delicious meal and drinks, and then on to your luxurious accommodations? A visit to Carnegie Inn & Spa is a fantastic way to make a memorable weekend. Make dining or lodging reservations at carnegieinnandspa.com or 814-234-2424 or visit them at 100 Cricklewood Drive, State College.

The annual Boalsburg Hometown Christmas kicks off the holiday season on Friday, November 30, with events running through Saturday evening, De-cember 1. Sponsored by the Boalsburg Village Conservancy, this celebration demonstrates the epitome of commu-nity as local merchants and businesses come together. One of the highlights of the weekend is the annual children’s coloring contest. All students from Mount Nittany Elementary are invited to submit their original coloring, which will then be displayed in the Boalsburg Fire Hall during the celebration. A panel of local judges, led by artist Terry Swanger, will select a winner from each grade who will have their project framed and printed on notecards. Winners receive a mug and gift bag and all of the children delight in seeing their creations displayed. Foodies are also in luck as several events are focused on filling your belly! In addition to your standard holiday fare of cookies and hot chocolate, Duffy’s Tavern is hosting their colonial Christmas dinner. Friday evening, Liberty Hill will offer A Taste of Boalsburg, a progressive dining event. Reservations for the dinner are $45 and are available by contacting Cori Kalupson 814-777-7828 by November 20. Saturday evening, head over to the Boalsburg Fire Hall for the

annual Holiday Hop. This fun event is designed for kids of all ages and includes entertainment by M&K Music with DJ Marlin. The hop, which costs $3 per person and runs from 6:00-9:00 p.m, will also offer refreshments by the Boalsburg Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. If your holiday celebration isn’t complete without a horse-drawn carriage, the Boalsburg Hometown Christmas has you covered! Rides are just $2 per person with children under 12 free. Unique Winter “Cheers” in Happy ValleyBy J.J. Robb

While it’s true that a draught of stronger stuff may not fend off the winter wind—in fact, alcohol can lower your body temperature—you may want to trek to your favorite cozy inn for something to break up the monotony of the cold and snow. Fortunately, some of the taverns of Happy Valley offer spirits that go beyond the norm, such as unique libations to celebrate the season and warm your spirits, if not actually your body. The Elk Creek Café in Millheim is already one of our favorite locations for farm-to-table fare, but it’s also an established bou-tique brewery with some notable offerings. “Oh, Tim has big plans for this winter,” Genny Uhl, assistant general manager of the Elk Creek said, speaking of Café brewmaster Tim Yarrington. “We have plenty of new things on tap and quite a few ‘beer-centric’ events coming up.” Tim talks about brewing with the reverence of a true beer believer, but seemed most excited about their new beers aged in bourbon barrels. “When you age a beer in a bourbon saturated barrel, it infuses the beer with some of the essence of the bourbon. It can add a certain smoothness, sometimes with tones of vanilla and a little more alcohol content,” Tim said. On December 2nd, the Elk Creek will be celebrate the repealing of prohibition with an event featuring period costumes, an authentic still on display, live music, and “all that jazz.” Tim also looks forward to the “Day of Darkness” on December 23rd, which celebrates the darkest days and longest nights of the year. Elk Creek will be offering five varieties of black beer which

“don’t tend to get that kind of spotlight, so that will be an interest-ing opportunity for real enthusiasts,” Tim said. In 2012, Elk Creek Café worked with Zeno’s Pub to celebrate

with a unique Zeno’s 40th Anniversary Black Ale, an “up front and assertive blend with the characteristics of a black beer.” “Dave Staab from Zeno’s said he wanted the beer equivalent of an espresso with a twist of lemon,” Tim said. Meanwhile, the Tavern Restaurant in downtown State College has the perfect solution to a cold winter’s night—a roaring fire in their popular bar area, known as the Adam’s Apple, and just a little bit of sin. Eric Tishler, manager of the Tavern Restaurant, told us that people come to the Adam’s Apple from all over the area to try their unique liquid creation, the Original Sin. “People love it. It’s definitely a fan favorite,” Ishler said. “We serve hundreds on football weekends.” The patented cocktail includes brandy, cherry brandy, cherry schnapps, triple sec, sours and soda water, topped off with a little cham-pagne. The result is a sweet drink, enjoyed equally by male and female tavern goers, that packs a punch close to a Long Island Iced Tea. The Autoport Restaurant, just off of South Atherton in State College, has its own panacea to the winter blues with new seasonal martinis. Robert Monzillo, manager of the Autoport, told us that when patrons are gathered on the outside deck warming themselves by the fire pit, the pumpkin pie martini seems to be among the favorites. “It’s really pretty popular around the holidays,” Robert said. “We use Three Olives Vodka, vanilla Crème De Cocoa chocolate liquor, fresh cream, and pumpkin puree. It really does taste like pumpkin pie—and, after a few, you may start to feel like a pumpkin.”

Whether you’re looking for pie‑flavored martinis or bourbon‑influenced beers, dress warmly and see the sights of Happy Valley. Just remember to have a designated sleigh driver before you head out.

Reflections and Home Reflections, 244 and 236 East Calder respectively, are two of Happy Valley’s gem—whether you are shopping for yourself, your home, or a loved one. Since opening their doors in 2006, the sister stores reflect the true community feel of State College. Carefully selected items, many from local producers, fill the stores with their charm and individuality. It’s easy to get lost for hours browsing the shelves, or their websites. At Reflections, you can feast your eyes (at least) on gourmet foods, like jam and fruit butters from Tait Farms, Harrison’s Fig and Olive Relish, wine selections from Oak Spring Winery and Evergreen Valley Winery, and unique Happy Valley gifts, such as wine boxes and house signs. Other collections include hand blown and cut

glass, ceramic serving pieces, table art, and their exclusive Nittany Coffee Collection, hailed as Happy Valley’s finest cup o’ joe Then, step next door to Home Reflections to pick out your new Vera Bradley items and browse through their extensive collection of

Carlo Biagi charms and licensed sorority beads. They also carry accessories from the one-of-a-kind Leakey Collection,

which uses environmentally sustainable sources while supporting the Maasai women Kenya.

If you’re really stumped for the perfect gift, invest in a gift card. With any luck, the

recipients will invite you to join them when they go shopping. And don’t forget to put one on your own holiday list. (And one more thing…most of their items are available on their websites at reflections-pa.com and homereflec-tions.us. But don’t check them out at work—you’ll be there for hours.)

Out and About: MillheimBy Holly Swanson

Just a few years ago, the main reason to visit Millheim was to take in the scenery and catch a glimpse of the Amish. Aside from one or two country shops, there wasn’t much else to do, but a lot has changed. Millheim has now become one of the most happening little towns in the Centre Region and has earned a SoHo-like reputation for comfortable cafés and art galleries. The 30-minute drive from State College to Millheim, still scenic and relaxing, is now just a small part of the overall experi-ence. Each of the following storefronts, which focus on their originali-ty while supporting local initiatives, is within easy walking distance of each other along Main Street. Penns Valley Outfitters—a small town general store that also rents recreational equipment like bikes, kayaks, and water tubes. They’ll even help you get to your destination with a shuttle

service. They carry natural and organic dry goods, clothing, and accessories. Elk Creek Café and Aleworks—the place all your friends are talking about! Elk Creek makes fresh food from local producers, hosts live jazz and blues music, and has a microbrew on the prem-ises—what’s not to like? And don’t forget to check out the featured artwork and Sunday brunch. Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center—with an

extensive display from local artists, including paintings, photographs, jewelry, and sculptures, the Green Drake is a must-see. The upstairs is devoted to semi-private studio space for members. Check their website for specials shows and workshops at greendrakeart.com. IngleBean Coffee House—this friendly coffee shop uses locally roasted beans from Standing Stone Coffee Company and makes sandwiches with hormone-free poultry and local ham. Breakfast fare, specialty coffees and espressos, and other fresh baked goods are also available along with free WIFI and film screenings.

Your Community Stage Awaits! Come Home to the State! By Jodie Dello Stritto

Through history and across cultures, the performing arts have been a constant, providing a forum for joy and celebration, for sorrow and coping, and most of all, for coming together. Since re-lighting its marquee in 2006, The State Theatre has built a solid foundation as a community stage—as a place for our community to come together and experience the transformational power of the performing arts. Thousands of performers have graced the stage—excited children in their first dance or music recitals; aspiring actors and singers on their way to bigger stages; amazing local talent with day-jobs and a passion for performing; nationally and internationally renowned performers wowing audiences in the State’s intimate setting. The big screen at The State Theatre has given our community the unique opportunity to enjoy independent films, documentaries, and the work of local filmmakers; and to witness the awe-inspiring talent and beauty of live performances from the New York’s Metropolitan Opera and London’s National Theatre Live. Students of the arts, of all ages and at all skill levels, have studied, learned, and experienced firsthand how the performing arts can change and shape one’s life. Growing self-esteem, learning self-discipline, and embracing teamwork are only a few examples of the impact of an education in the performing arts. Downtown State College and the entire region enjoy the

destination appeal of The State Theatre as it attracts both local residents and visitors. In addition to being a key economic driver in the Downtown economy by attracting consumer to local restaurants and businesses, the theatre significantly enhances the curb appeal on College Avenue. Local non-profit organizations have utilized the stage at the State to bring the community together around their own missions. Benefit shows and events hosted at the State have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for worthwhile causes that impact people right here in Happy Valley and beyond. If you haven’t been to The State, some see what you’ve been missing at your community-owned theatre!

The State Theatre has fun for the whole family By Holly Swanson

Even though the holidays are all about the kids, the littles can also get (figura-tively) lost in the shuffle. We spend so much time doing things FOR our kids—shopping for gifts, running around to school recitals, baking cookies for class—that we might miss chances to do things WITH our kids.

We all suffer from a shade of the winter blues now and then. Maybe a little treat for your chilled soul is all you need to bounce back! From antique decadence to the crisp lines of modern comfort, you can find the perfect bed & breakfast in Happy Valley that will bring some color back into your winter. Try one of these local gems to help you relax and renew: The Chatelaine Bed & Breakfast in Pine Grove Mills features a “layered generational” design—it was originally built in 1841 and has been added onto throughout the years. The delicate landscaping and surrounding farm fields gently invoke a sense of simpler times. Inside, you’ll be greeted by the one of the two ladies of the house, Mae or Amanda McQuade, a mother-daughter team who will see to your needs while respecting your privacy. Mae has furnished the Chatelaine (French for “mistress of a large chateau”) with an eclectic mix of antiques and treasured collectibles from her travels, like a marble bust from a French junk pile and various sets of china from overseas. Murals and hand-made dolls designed by Mae’s daughters enliven the halls and stairwells. There are four guest rooms, each with a king-sized bed. The premier Swan Room, on the second floor, boasts an attached bathroom, plenty of natural light and a mammoth four-poster brass bed from a Texas bordello. Another guest room on the second floor has its private bath in the hall while the two third-floor rooms share a bath between them. A full breakfast is served each morning in the formal dining room and there is a common sitting room where you can enjoy the company of other guests if it suits you. A carriage house in the back has been refinished recently to host parties for up to 45 people. The main area is lined with French doors and decorated in shabby chic: white walls, ceiling, wicker furniture, and chandeliers. A catering preparation area in the back, enough fine china to serve all 45 guests, and modern restrooms finish out the rest of the space. So, if you desire to unwind in an antique-filled château in the countryside, the Chatelaine is for you. But if you are looking for something a little more modern, there’s Our Fair Lady in Bellefonte. This Italianate Second Empire home was built in 1883 by lumber baron John Ardell, Jr., and still displays the original stained glass front entryway, rich woodwork, pocket doors, and fireplace. Extravagant renovations have been made during the last five years, but they were all thoughtfully influenced by the home’s

architectural details. The proprietors, Bob and Tami Schuster, pride themselves on offering a pampered experience—a place where you can kick back and relax. Each room features luxurious bedding atop a queen-sized bed, soothing colors, and simple, classic furniture. There are four guest rooms, two of which have private full baths. The bathrooms have been completely modernized and are stunningly beautiful with marble floors, detailed tile-work, and shining fixtures. The third-floor bath features a curved walk-in shower and a glass cabinet door that allows you to see the original stairs into the cupola. Even more decadent is the extended-stay suite featuring a

separate bedroom, its own entry, a back porch complete with wicker furniture, and a modern kitchen and bath. Guests can enjoy breakfast in the formal dining room and games or a good book in one of the two front parlors. Surrounded by ornate Victorian-era homes known as “painted ladies,” Our Fair Lady is within walking distance of local restaurants, shops, and the Centre County Library and Historical Museum. This B & B is perfect for those who like to be in the middle of things, surrounded by fine appointments, and treated like a favored family member. Between the bases of Mount Nittany and Tussey Mountain lies the bed and breakfast at the Rock Garden in Oak Hall. You’ll travel a short ways down a back road to find this new farm-house style B & B, built in 2005. It is ideal for those who want to escape from the world for a moment. The views from each guest room window are spectacular! And, if you sit for a moment on the wrap-around front porch, all you see for miles are treetops, staggered valleys, ridge peaks, and vast blankets of sky. The quiet of this landscape can be quite soothing. Each of the five guest rooms feature simple, serene decor and attached full baths. One room is on the main floor and is fully handicap-accessible with two twin beds (all other rooms have queen-sized beds). Natural wood, light walls, and many windows help give an airy feel to the home.

There are three common rooms available for your use: a great room with a fireplace, a garden room, and a large dining area, where you will be served a full breakfast in the morning. In addition, there are 17 acres of woods and countryside to explore. Just off the road, you also will find a retail greenhouse, where you can buy rock garden plants at 10% off retail price. This wind-swept homestead is just right for those who want

to disappear off the map and surround themselves with utter peace and quiet. There are many more bed and breakfasts around Centre County, all of which are waiting to warm up your winter weekends.

THON 2013: Inspire Tomorrow’s MiraclesBy Holly Swanson

For nearly 40 years, Penn State students have participated in the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (or simply THON, if you don’t want to get looked at funny). What started as a friendly competition of both endurance and moves back in the early 1970s has evolved into the World’s largest student run philan-thropy, culminating in a weekend long, no-sitting, no-sleeping event, all to support children who are battling back against cancer and their families who are right by their side. Through year-round fundraising efforts, THON students have raised more than $89 Million ($10.6 Million last year alone!) all to support children and their families who are living with pediatric cancer. More specifically, THON directly supports The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Four Diamonds was co-founded in 1972 by Charles and Irma Millard after the death of their son, Christopher, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 11. The Fund is named after a story that Christopher wrote shortly before he lost his battle with cancer at the age of 14. Inspire Tomorrow’s Miracles is the theme for THON 2013, which will take place inside the Bryce Jordan Center beginning the evening of Friday, February 15th and ending the afternoon of Sunday, February 17th. The 2013 theme was chosen by the THON Overall Committee earlier in the school year to embody the visions and goals for THON 2013 and for years to come. This theme signifies an innovative and inspiring future ahead for Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital, The Four Diamonds Fund, and THON.

A popular destination for these outdoor enthusiasts is the 8,300-acre Raystown Lake in Huntington County. Even though the marina closes in November, the Raystown Lake Area has myriad activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and even fishing. Although the busy part of the fishing season runs between April and October, fishermen come out in November to catch striper bass and catfish. “What makes Raystown Lake so special is there are so many things to do here,” Katrina Ormsby, visitor information specialist for the Raystown Lake Region & Huntington County Visitors Bureau. “There is every kind of outdoor activity around here,” Katrina said. “But what make it really special are the community and the friendly nature of the people in our area.” Raystown Lake is over 28 miles long, so whether you’re going for a weekend or just day tripping, you have a variety of options.

For an all-in-one-place experience, try the south end of the lake, where you’ll find the Lake Raystown Resort, Lodge & Conference Center. In addition to the hotel, the resort offers 221 campsites with water, electric, and cable hook-ups right next to the lake, with access to trails and all the outdoor activities you would expect for the area. It also has its own convenience store and two restaurants. If you’re willing to look for your perfect little hideaway, there are over 300 privately rented cabins and bed & breakfasts all along the lake. However, on the north side of the lake near Huntington, you can find a balance of nature with some man-made amenities. At Standing Stone Coffee Company in Huntington, they not only brew some of the best java, but also offer some modern conveniences that bikers and hikers may not find on the trail. “There’s an extensive trail system that comes very close to where we’re located,” Manager Damian Castener said. “Many people come in from the trail and we are ready to take care of them. In addition to coffee, we serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offer laundry, free Wi-Fi service, and use of computers on the premises.” If you’re tired out from a day of exercise and want to find a little night life, try Mimi’s Martini Bar & Restaurant. A hip little family-run establishment, Mimi’s has been an institution in Huntington for more than ten years. As their name suggests, they specialize in Martinis, offering more than 30 varieties, but they also have a wide menu to meet every craving, from crab cakes and Delmonico steak to a burger and fries. “Word of mouth brings people in from all over the area,” said Sarah Kovach, bartender at Mimi’s. “We get hunters, bikers, hikers – we’ve got something for everybody with some very stylish décor.” So, when you’re ready to take to the trail and hit the town, the north side of Raystown Lake may be your solution.

“I think that everyone benefits from a caring community,” says Audra Hixson. “Being active in the community also creates social connections and lasting relationships.” And, she definitely knows about being active in our community. Although originally from western Pennsylvania and living for a time in Tucson, Arizona, Audra has made Happy Valley her home during the last 16 years. She takes her role in the community seriously, wanting to help make State College a better place through her own connections, hard work, and volunteerism.

As assistant director of the Penn State Center for Women Students, Audra supports and advocates for Penn State students, both women and men, who are in crises related to sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking situations. Previously, Audra assisted survivors through the Centre County Women’s Resource Center. She also donates her time to Centre County violence preven-tion boards. Having university and county resources like those provided by Audra is invaluable for helping victims maintain their safety and feel supported throughout their recovery processes. And, if that isn’t enough, Audra currently is working on her second master’s degree. She is studying mental health counseling, specialization in trauma-related counseling. After achieving this degree, she will be able to work in private practice. The reason Audra stays in this area is because of the good quality of life she enjoys here. “I enjoy the easy access to a number of natural and outdoor areas, along with the cultural events that the university draws,” she says. “Having lived in several urban areas, I appreciate the open space that surrounds State College.” She participates in trail running events, such as the Rothrock Challenge, and many road running events. The local state parks and forests provide amazing opportunities for her love of biking and hiking, as well. When it comes to volunteerism, you will find her hanging out with the local animals. “I have worked in animal shelters as a volunteer, but I currently like to support the work of the Hundred Cat Foundation, which does valuable service related to the care of stray and feral cats.” Audra’s natural ability with animals is

well-known among her friends—she’s the person they all call when they have a sick pet or when find a stray that needs to get to a shelter. People like Audra are what make State College a wonderful place to live and work. She devotes herself to improving her community while taking time to enjoy it, too. She sums it up best herself, “There are so many great places to be active outdoors and it’s possible to meet some amazing people through organized events and clubs. Along with these places, there is a variety of musical and theater events that are easily accessible downtown or at the university.”

For the future of State College, Audra hopes that it will “grow in socially and environmentally conscious ways. We have an increas-ingly diverse community and, through conscious effort, I think we can strengthen a sense of community where everyone can feel welcome.” Luckily, Happy Valley has many residents like Audra who are willing to devote their time and energy to making that happen.

THON February 15‑17, 2013

Every year in February, Penn State students gather at the Bryce Jordan Center to dance for 46 unstoppable hours. Not just for fun… they dance for the kids. The largest student-run philanthropy in the world, THON continues to break its fundraising records every year, topping $10M in 2012—all of it for the Four Diamonds Fund to fight pediatric cancer. THON 2013 kicked off in October with the THON 5K, and students are hard at work raising money through canning weekends and other events leading up to the big weekend February 15-17, 2013. There’s nothing like experiencing THON in person, and many

Penn State alumni return to campus for this special event. To keep up with THON activities throughout the year and to learn how you can donate, visit thon.org.

recreational and environmental resources. The organization relies on generous support from the community and from Penn State alumni who cherish the beauty and the recreation of this natural treasure. The Conservancy has added an exciting new event this year to support their work for Mt. Nittany: The Mt. Nittany Marathon is a scenic 26.2 mile certified run winding around the area of its namesake, Mt. Nittany. The inaugural marathon is on a Sunday morning in September when historical average temperatures range from a low of 50 degrees to a high of 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Based on the current qualifying dates, the Mt. Nittany Marathon will also serve as a last-chance qualifier for the 2014 Boston Marathon. At mtnittany.org you can find rates and sign up information.

Mount Nittany Conservancy is also seeking business sponsors for this exciting event—more information is available online.
