Building Community - Together

For many around the country, holiday gift buying equates to a few clicks on the com-puter, or bumping shoulders with other hurried shoppers under the florescent lights of mall corridors. Strolling along sidewalks and peaking in decorated win-dows, chatting with store owners, finding unique and unexpected treasures inside small shops; these are images of the past in most cities. Such holiday shopping is a nostalgic dream, an “It’s a Wonderful Life” kind of black and white memory.

Unless you live in a town where commu-nity still means something. Where there is still an authentic-- not manufactured-- heartbeat downtown. Where locally owned and operated businesses are labors of love, not just commerce.

In the following pages, we celebrate our small businesses and the character they add to our sense of place. The diversity of goods and services found in this area makes holiday shopping easy, and the real, sensory experience of doing so makes it joyful. We invite you to browse these pages and be reminded, again, of how lucky we are to live here. Shop in person if you can, or call and support our independent stores if you’re too far from your northern home. A conversation with

Liz Ahrens Executive Director,

Crooked Tree Arts Center

Editor’s Note: A community’s

sense of place is made up by many

spokes in the figurative wheel. For

northern Michigan, the water, the

landscape, the farm fresh foods,

independent shops, access to wild

spaces, and people all play defining

roles. Art, in turn, takes all of these

things and creates a sense of togeth-

erness, depth, and meaning. In this

article, Crooked Tree Arts Center

executive director Liz Ahrens helps

explain just what it means to be the

steward of this critical aspect of life.

By KATE BASSETT

Aristotle was on to

something when he said

the “aim of art is to represent not

the outward appearance of things,

but their inward significance.” The

human experience, the natural

world, the connection-- and some-

times disconnection-- of both are

most felt in art, music, dance, the

written word.

It’s a palpable truth in northern

Michigan. This is an area full of

creative hearts, folks who reside here

because the landscape, the light, the

people serve as constant inspira-

Typically Thanksgiving weekend

marks the beginning of ski season,

but due to the lack of snow and mild

temperatures the past few weeks,

winter sports enthusiasts still have a

few more days to locate cold weather

gear and wax those skis.

Erin Ernst, director of commu-

nications for Boyne, said the snow

guns have made an appearance,

with night time temperatures sig-

nificantly lower the weekend before

Thanksgiving. The key is having

temperatures low enough for snow

making, she said.

“With temperatures at say 20 de-

grees, we can make twice as much

snow,” she added.

Nub’s Nob is holding on to a little

white coverage, but lost most of the

snow made last week, according to

general manager, Jim Bartlett.

“This week is not looking favorable

for snow making,” he said, adding,

“but looks better than last week.”

It takes about two to three days

of continual snow making to open

a couple of runs, Bartlett noted. If

temperatures are only low enough

at night, it could take up to five days

to get needed cover.

“Temperatures are not favorable

for snow making now. Looking at the

week ahead, going into the weekend,

there may be some opportunity, but

not substantial. We are really fight-

ing mother nature here,” Ernst said.

Though local ski hills were unable

to make the holiday debut, Nub’s

Nob and Boyne Highlands have

snow makers standing by, waiting for

the first opportunity to start blasting.

According to the Gaylord National

Weather Service, Harbor Springs

is currently experiencing slightly

above average seasonal tempera-

with Bill Prall

Page 2With all the creative energy bouncing around town, its safe to

say the ideas are flowing, dreams are building, schemes are be-

ing discussed in coffee shops and corner bars. There’s a point

where ideas must move to action or they wither away, and local

resident Bill Prall knows step one is simple: write it down.

Downtown Harbor Springs lit up for the holiday season

last Friday night as the community gathered for the annual

tree lighting ceremony, and many captured the moment

with their cell phone cameras - true sign of the times.

The Water. It’s one of those phrases so

synonymous with this region that it almost

requires capitalization, as if its a proper name

in itself. Little Traverse Bay’s watershed is es-

sential to the way of life here, and protecting it

is a critical-- and often expensive-- business.

With the motto “for good, forever,” the Peto-

skey Harbor Springs Area Community Founda-

tion understands just how important it is to

have the resources necessary to be stewards of

this ancient, yet fragile natural resource, which

is why executive director David Jones is asking

folks to help reach a $250,000 matching grant

goal to put the newly created Little Traverse

Bay Watershed Protection Fund at $750,000.

The weekend following Thanksgiv-

ing is known for being a frenzy of

materialistic madness. Thanks to

Emmet County’s lack of shopping

malls and never-ending rows of big

business found throughout much

of America, shopping-- still a sig-

nificant part of the holiday week-

end-- is a personal, more meaningful

experience.

For small businesses in northern

Michigan, the emphasis on shop-

ping local is a trend that is becoming

more and more popular, causing old

stand-by phrases like “black Friday”

to be slightly less cringe-worthy.

Joanne Condino, of Three Pines

Studio in Cross Village which hosted

their community tree lighting event

on Friday, November 25, said that

they were encouraged by local dedi-

cation to independent artists and

their gallery.

“We were overwhelmed with the

support we received from some of

our full-time and summer residents

who purchased local artists’ works.
