HARBOR RIVER BRIDGE REPLACEMENT Beaufort County Project Update 2019 – Summer PROJECT INFORMATION SCDOT will be constructing a new high-level fixed-span bridge and removing the swing-span bridge along US 21 (Sea Island Parkway) over the Harbor River in Beaufort County. The bridge provides the only means for vehicular access from the mainland to Harbor Island, Hunting Island, and Fripp Island. The proposed 3,340’ long and 65’ tall fixed span bridge, which can be seen in the rendering to the right, will replace the current swing-span bridge that was originally constructed between 1938 and 1940. PROJECT MILESTONES Construction Began Following the NPDES permit approval, construction began on April 22, 2019. Embankment Construction The Contractor began constructing the new roadway approach embankment this quarter. Causeway Construction Construction also began on the floating barge causeway that will allow the Contractor access via water for bridge construction. Foundation Construction The project features 2 types of deep foundations – driven piles and drilled shafts that have both commenced this quarter. CURRENT ACTIVITIES 2019 – Q3 SCDOT’s Design-Build contractor is preparing to pour the concrete pier elements on the inland end of the bridge (St Helena side) which will be the first visible structure of the new bridge. Once the first few piers are constructed, crews will begin installing beams, the first of which will arrive over road and then move to delivery by barge. Drivers will notice the roadway embankment rising over the coming months, higher than the final roadway surface in a process called surcharging. This process consolidates the subsurface soil in a very slow and controlled manner. US 21 Harbor River Bridge Replacement Project updates are prepared quarterly.
