Junior high students do well at festival By BROOKLYN O’HARE The Oberlin junior high music students did well at the Junior High Music Festival held last Wednesday in Colby. Oberlin finished with one advanced performance by Kade Grafel on his piano solo, 27 Is and four IIs. Receiving Is on their vocal solos were TyLynn Peterson, Tabor Er- ickson, Carmen Winder, Meghan Davies, Kaitlynn Fisher, Sierra Hendrickson and Miranda Long. Receiving Is on band solos were Kade Grafel, sax; Alexandra Water- man, clarinet; Ara Marine-Single- ton, clarinet; Sierra Hendrickson, flute; Daniel Lerew, snare drum; Luke Koerperich, snare drum; Emily Larson, trumpet; TyLynn Peterson, clarinet; KeAnn Jacobs, trumpet; Tabor Erickson, trombone; and Mason Ahlberg, trombone. Luke Koerperich and Daniel Lerew also earned I’s on their piano solos. All three vocal ensembles re- ceived Is. This includes the aseventh grade girls’ ensemble, the seventh and eighth grade boys’ ensemble, and the 8eighth grade girls’ en- semble. The seventh grade girls’ensemble includes TyLynn Peterson, Si- erra Hendrickson, Jillian Peters, Miranda Long, Tristen Davis, Jenna Long, Carmen Winder and Ashley Treese. Both the woodwind ensemble and the brass ensemble received Is. Scholars take sixth at state meet By EMILY BADER The Oberlin Red Devil Scholar Bowl team placed fifth at the State Scholar Bowl held Feb. 11 at Ell- Saline High School in Brookville. Representing Oberlin were se- nior Nolan Henningson; juniors Miki Dorshorst, Matthew Helm and Elizabeth Nedland; and fresh- men Caleb Koerperich and Sierra Lohoefener. The team’s coach is Marlene Moxter. Twelve schools qualified for the state tournament by placing in the top three of their regional the week before. Competing at the 2A State Tournament were Eskridge - Mis- sion Valley, Onaga, WaKeeney- Trego Community, Ellinwood, Leavenworth- Immaculata, Inman, Syracuse, Howard-West Elk, Win- chester-Jefferson County North, Prairie Village-KC Christian, Ells- worth and Oberlin. The teams were divided into two pools with six teams in each pool. The top three teams of each pool would continue to the finals. In pool play, Oberlin won three rounds and lost two. In the first round, Oberlin defeated Mission Valley 40 to 10. Oberlin fell to WaKeeney in the second round 90 to 30. Oberlin then won rounds three and four, defeating Onaga 30 to 20 and Ellinwood 40 to 10. The Devils faced Immaculata in the last round of pool play, losing 40 to 30. With a winning record in pool play, the Red Devils were able to ad- vance to the championship round. In the final rounds, Oberlin won their first two matches against Jefferson County 30 to 10 and WaKeeney 60 to 35. The Red Devils lost their next three rounds: Prairie Village 50 to 35, Inman 40 to 30, and Immaculata 60 to 40. Inman took first, followed by Prairie Village, second; WaKeeney, third; and Immaculata, fourth. Oberlin, fifth; and Jefferson County North, sixth. “I feel the team did a great job,” said Nolan. “We were really com- petitive and happy we made it this far.” After the tournament, Principal Ben Jimenez and Activities Director Joe Dreher received a letter from John Phillips, the athletic director from Immaculata High School. Mr. Phillips wrote, “Although every team there performed well and represented their school excel- lently, I was most impressed with your students. Not only did they perform well in the academic part of the event, but their sportsman- ship and friendliness did not go unnoticed. “Obviously, our schools are far apart, so scheduling any regular season contests with you is a long shot to say the least. But if we ever see your school’s name on any post-season schedule, I can assure you that we will look forward to competing against a school that has students with such great character and sportsmanship. . . “Your students and coach should be proud of themselves for the way they represented your school..” Classifieds help you sell your stuff.
