Harcros Chemicals
A Brief Overview of the Organics Division
May 5th, 2008
Harcros Organics
Producer of Specialty Surfactants• Alkoxylates, Phosphate Esters, Functional Monomers,
Ether Sulfates, Emulsifiers, Emulsifier Blends, Calcium & Amine Sulfonates, Antifoams, and Custom Products
• Brand names are T-Mulz, T-Det, T-Surf, T-Tergamide, Foamer and Emulzymer
• 2 alkoxylation reactors - 8,500 and 4,000 gal.– Nameplate capacity is 65 MM pounds/year
Harcros Organics – Facts and Figures
• Located in Kansas City, Kansas
– On the same site as Headquarters
• Contribute approximately 10-12% of total corporate revenues
• Produce 40 MM lbs of product annually
• 24 hour operation (5+ basis)
• 53 employees
• Access to a diverse sales force.– 100+ members – a key advantage
Kansas City – Facts and Figures
• Located in the Midwest.• 2 MM people in the greater metropolitan area.• Missouri and Kaw rivers flow through the city. • renowned for beef and barbeque style• Agriculture is a significant industry.
– State crop is wheat.• Climate:
– Annual rain total – 40 in,– Annual snow total – 20 in.– At the top of “tornado alley”
Core competencies include:
• Ethoxylation
• Propoxylation
• Phosphorylation
• Sulfation (with sulfamic acid)
• Antifoam Formulation
• Custom Blending – Agricultural, T-Mulz blends
Industries That We Service
• Agricultural Adjuvants and Inerts
• Latex emulsion Polymerization
• Industrial and Institutional
• “Oil Patch” (oil and gas recovery)
• Building Materials
• Radiation Curable Films
• Water Treatment
• Epoxies
• Paint and Coatings
• De-inking (paper recycling)
Facilities:
• Ethylene oxide plant (EO)• Liquid Blending Unit (LBU) • Formulation Plant• Pilot Plant• Acid Plant – Strictly packaging
Ethylene Oxide Plant
• Conduct both ethoxylation and propoxylation• Emerson Delta V control system.• Also prepare calcium and amine sulfonates, ether sulfates and phosphate
esters.
Liquid Blending Unit
• Produce custom and T-Mulz blends• Package containers and tank trucks.• Manufacture ether sulfates and phosphate esters
Formulation Plant
• Produce silicone and non-silicone antifoams• Also produce, small quantity, value added
products.• White room packaging
Technical Resources
• Research and Development:– Two Ph.D. Chemists (surfactant focused).
– Three B.S. chemists.
– One process engineer.
– Over one hundred combined years of surfactant experience.
• QA Lab Staffing:– Five full time, trained analysts.
– Three shifts operating.
• Equipment Availability:– FTIR, UV/VIS, AA, headspace GC, HPLC, Auto-tensiometer, Coulter -
counter, viscometers (macro and micro), autotitrators, moisture balances.
Materials that we Ethoxylate or Propoxylate:
• Alkyphenols:
– Nonylphenol
– Octylphenol (PTOP)
– Dodecylphenol
• Iso-alcohols
– Isodecyl alcohol
– Isotridecyl alcohol
• Short chain linear alcohols
• Fatty Alcohols
– C12-16 (coconut)
– C16-C18
• Polyamines
– DETA/TETA
– aminoethylethanolamine
• Castor Oil
Antifoams:
• We produce silicone and non-silicone antifoams in separate areas of the formulation plant.
• All silicone emulsion antifoams, with the exception of one, can be made as food grade products. – Activities varies from 5-30%
• We sell many block polymers (Ethylene Oxide plant) as antifoams or defoamers.
• Out total antifoam production volume is 8 MM pounds.
Custom Blending
• Most of the custom blends that we produce are directed toward the Agricultural market. – These are referred to as EC’s, or “Emulsifiable Concentrates”.
– Most are “T-Mulz” products
• There are two kettles in our Liquid Blending Unit (LBU) that are routinely used for making phosphate esters and ether sulfates.
• Energetic agitation
• Excellent heat exchange properties
Phosphate Ester Products:
• The strength of this product group is their alkali/electrolyte tolerance.
• Our phosphate esters are based mostly on our own ethoxylates (both alkylphenol and alcohol).
• Use both polyphosphoric acid (115%) and phosphorus pentoxide.
• One of our products is a phosphated acrylic monomer.– T-Mulz 1228
Ether Sulfates
• We use sulfamic acid to prepare our ether sulfates. This sulfation method is mild, and yields products with low contaminant levels.– Current volume is 3 MM pounds/year.
– Most of the volume is directed toward oil/gas recovery
• We can only produce ammonium salts directly. However, with post-processing, we can produce sodium salts.– We produce one such speacialty product, Emulzymer N4SES-AQ
• Typical batch sizes vary from 4,000 – 90,000 lbs,
Technology Platforms
• Narrow Range Ethoxylates (NRE’s).
• Functional Monomers
• Agricultural products
• NRE ether sulfates
• Fermentation Defoamers
