Hardin County Resource Guide 1.1 1 02/2012
HARDIN COUNTY RESOURCE GUIDE
The Hardin County Resource Guide is designed to help individuals, families and service
providers locate needed resources in Hardin County, Kentucky.
This guide was developed as part of the Hardin County Model Court initiative, which is
working to decrease the time youth spend in foster care by improving services for youth
and their families through better collaboration between Family Court and the community.
Hardin County Model Court is one of several model courts in Kentucky funded by a
grant from the Court Improvement Program. The Court Improvement Program is a
federally funded project to improve court practice in child abuse, neglect and dependency
cases.
The Department of Family and Juvenile Services of the Administrative Office of the
Courts oversees Court Improvement Program initiatives for Kentucky.

Court Designated Workers (CDWs) have given a second chance to thousands of
Kentucky youth by helping troubled young people avoid formal court appearances
through diversion programs. The diversion process teaches young people to be
accountable for their actions and encourages them to avoid other encounters with the law.
CDWs process juvenile complaints against youth under age 18. CDWs are in a position
to influence children and teens who are in trouble. These complaints fall into two
categories, status offenses and public offenses. Status offenses are noncriminal forms of
juvenile behavior, such as running away from home, skipping class, tobacco offenses or
exhibiting beyond-control behaviors at home or at school. Public offenses are defined in
the same terms as adult charges.
CDWs utilize uniform criteria to determine if a juvenile is eligible to participant in the
diversion program or must be forwarded to formal court.
CDWs collaborate with the juvenile and their parents to define the diversion agreement,
which usually consists of restitution, community service, service learning projects,
curfew, educational seminars, referrals to counseling, drug/alcohol assessments and/or
mental health services.
