TRAINEESHIP

● Either a compulsory or an elective part of the degree

● The traineeship included in the degree can be completed eitherabroad or in Finland, supported by university or the employercovering all the costs

● Students may apply for a subsidy for a traineeship that is part oftheir degree. Please see `Instructions for students´, section`Traineeships´ to find a list of the traineeship course codeseligible for subsidy applications,https://guide.student.helsinki.fi/en/traineeships


OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITSOF TRAINEESHIPS

The objectives of traineeships are defined by your own degree, soplease get to know the objectives before the traineeshipDuring the traineeship you can

• acquire information regarding different employment possibilites,search for your own path

• apply what you have learned in practice: learn new skills, learn howtheoretical learnings are applied in working life

• find a topic or material for your master´s thesis

A traineeship is an excellent opportunity to create contacts. Manystudents get employed by the same employer, where they´ve donetheir traineeship.

PREPARE FOR ATRAINEESHIP

• See to the employment agreement and the traineeshipagreement

• Acquaint yourself with the employer´s organisation before thebeginning of the traineeship

• Clarify your own and your employer´s objectives for thetraineeship

• Familiarise yourself with the learning objectives of thetraineeship course in your degree

• Keep a learning diary• Please ask further information about reporting the traineeship

from the coordinating teacher of your degree programme.


THE TRAINEE´S WAGE

● A trainee always agrees on his/her employment with theemployer, who pays the wage of the trainee

● The mimimum wage of the trainee is set by Kela, in 2018 itwas 1 189e/month

● A trainee has the same rights as any other employee workingfor the employer (sick leave, occupational health care, annualleave etc.)

Traineeship subsidy

UNIVERSITY FUNDINGFOR TRAINEESHIPS

● The subsidy is one way to get support for doing thetraineeship.

● The subsidy is not paid directly to the student, but isinstead used to cover part of the wage expenses for theemployer.

● The traineeship subsidy is 1 800€ per student for atraineeship lasting at least two months.

● The employer is entitled to invoice University after thetraineeship about the wage expenses (1 800€)

● The employer will pay the wage for the trainee. N.B!employment agreement

APPLICATION PERIOD

• No official deadline for the applications• The application period started on 1 November• Apply for the traineeship subsidy only after you have been

selected for a traineeship placement and if the employerrequires the subsidy

• N.B! Apply for the subsidy before the beginning of thetraineeship, the subsidy is not granted retrospectively

REQUIREMENTS FORTHE STUDENTS

All attending undergraduate students are eligible to apply if theymeet all of the criteria below:

● Bachelor’s students with 60 credits completed at the University ofHelsinki by the time of application.

● Master’s students at the time of application, if you meet the remainingcriteria below:

● The degree programme/degree you are currently completing includesa course involving a funded traineeship.

● You have not completed the course involving a traineeship which isincluded in your degree programme/degree.

● You have not previously used the University of Helsinki’s traineeshipsubsidy.

NB! Exceptional cases in which the funded traineeship is only inthe Master’s stage:● the Faculty of Social Sciences● general and adult education (Finnish- and Swedish-language

programmes) at the Faculty of Educational Sciences● geosciences/geology at the Faculty of Science● agricultural sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry

NB! Exceptional cases in which the funded traineeship isincorporated only into the Bachelor’s stage:● Master’s programme for teachers of mathematics, physics and

chemistry.

CRITERIA FOR THEPLACEMENT

● The traineeship placement can be in a company, central orlocal government, an organisation, an association, a foundationor a cooperative in Finland or abroad.

● The University’s traineeship funding is not available for atraineeship in which the University of Helsinki is the employer.

● The trainee must have a contractual or public-serviceemployment relationship, and the wage paid to the traineemust equal or exceed the minimum wage defined by Kela(1 189€/month in 2018).

CRITERIA FOR THEPLACEMENT

● The minimum duration is two months.

● The trainee must be offered expert duties and the traineeshipmust develop the student’s professional expertise and provideopportunities to learn new knowledge and skills.

● The trainee must have an appointed supervisor at the hostorganisation.

HOW TO APPLY?

1. Make sure you meet the criteria for applying for the subsidy.2. Once you have been selected for a traineeship placement,

notify Career Services by completing the relevant e-form.3. Career Services will check the information on the e-form to

confirm that both you and your employer are eligible for thefunding.

4. After completing the e-form, you will receive an emailconcerning the decision to grant you the funding. Attached tothe email will be a pre-filled traineeship agreement

5. Submit the traineeship agreement to your employer forsignature. You will receive detailed instructions via email.
