NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: APRIL 14, 2015

Marc-André Hamelin is not just a wizard of the keyboard. Although the Montreal native made his mark with the virtuoso repertoire of the Romantic period, Hamelin has also proven his skills in the subtlest music of the Classical period, releasing three highly acclaimed volumes of sonatas by Haydn. Now he turns his attention to Mozart with a specially priced double disc of Mozart Piano Sonatas, offering further proof that he is one of the finest musicians of our time. But that is only one of two thrilling new additions to Hamelin’s discography. He has also teamed up with the world-famous Takács Quartet for an album of chamber music by Shostakovich, featuring the composer’s powerful Piano Quintet. Continuing in the chamber music vein, pianist Andreas Staier joins forces once again with clarinetist Lorenzo Coppola for a recording of sonatas by Brahms, cellist Ophélie Gaillard plays an album of Latin-inspired works, and tenor Mark Padmore teams up with fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout for a recording of songs by Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart. Anglophiles will rejoice over Nicholas Daniel’s album of English oboe concertos by Vaughan Williams and MacMillan and Stephen Layton’s new collection of choral music by Leighton with the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge. Non-classical releases this month are highlighted by the Jazz Village début of Push Up, a band that blurs the lines between jazz, funk and rock.

IMPORT Barthold Kuijken named this album Bach vs. Haydn because it aims to compare and contrast important works by two major composers that were written at almost the same time. C.P.E. Bach wrote his Quartets in 1788. They are considered to be among his very best creations; he was to die a year after they were composed. Haydn composed the Trios heard here in 1789, at the end of his period with the Eszterházys. The stylistic differences between the two are enormous. In Bach, we find Stürm und Drang (storm and stress) and Empfindsamkeit (sensitivity); in Haydn, alongside his typical wit and moving depth, we find elegance, charm and the cantabile quality of Viennese Classicism.

IMPORT Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856) was a Hungarian guitarist and composer. He lived and worked in Vienna, which had been home to various prominent figures of the guitar, including Diabelli and Giuliani. Mertz’s compositions, unlike that of most of his

contemporaries, followed the pianistic models of Chopin, Schubert and Schumann. On this recording, Raphaëlla Smits performs the grand fantasias Harmonie du soir and Le Romantique, alongside several other works, including Mertz’s transcriptions of six Schubert Lieder. Smits plays two historic French instruments as well as an eight-stringed guitar by John Gilbert.

IMPORT Pianist François Chaplin was a prizewinner at the Senigallia International Competition, was awarded the Mozart Prize and Robert Casadesus Prize at the Cleveland International Competition, and graduated from the Conservatoire National

Supérieur de Musique in Paris with a Premier Prix. He is currently a professor at the Conservatoire de Rayonnement Régional in Versailles. On this recording, Chaplin plays Schubert’s beloved Impromptus. Each one of these eight works is, in its own way, a microcosm of the Schubertian world – an echo of the Vienna that was so dear to him. They give proof to the brilliance of Schubert’s genius in all its intricate and astonishing complexity.

IMPORT George Onslow (1784–1853) was a French composer of English descent. His wealth, position and personal tastes allowed him to pursue a path unfamiliar to most of his French contemporaries – one that was closer to that of German romantic

composers. His principal output was chamber music and Onslow’s efforts expanded the audience for a genre that was not popular in Paris at the time. Amongst the many works he wrote, his String Quartets stand out for their unique spirit of invention. This recording by the Quatuor Ruggieri bring out both the intelligence and Parisian charm of these unjustly neglected works.

IMPORT This recording by keyboard virtuoso Olivier Baumont offers listeners a selection of some of the world’s best-loved compositions for harpsichord. The works chosen comprise essential repertoire for amateur and professional players alike. From Jean-

Philippe Rameau’s Tambourin to Handel’s Sarabande, this “greatest hits” collection includes works from a wide range of repertoire and styles, all performed by one of the most famous harpsichord players performing on period instruments today.

IMPORT A truly multifaceted musician, pianist Jean-Pierre Armengaud has not only pursued a successful international concert career, he has also instructed at many fine institutions and universities, taught master classes and authored several musicological

articles about French and Russian music. This recording from Bayard Music is offered in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the death of the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin. It features a selection of the composer’s works inspired by “mystical” themes.

IMPORT Following Saint Bernard of Clairvaux’s initial impetus in 1115, Cistercian abbeys sprang up in almost every corner of Europe and the order is still very much alive today. This recording presents a musical history of these communities through the

ages. It is a history that moves from Gregorian chant to songs performed in various living languages after the Second Vatican Council. These are either sung a capella or accompanied by an organ or zither.

IMPORT Live Music Now – a charitable organization that promotes the work of young artists – was founded in 1977 by Yehudi Menuhin. Live Music Now Scotland débuted in 1984, and 2014 marked its 30th anniversary. The charity has kept Menuhin’s vision

alive in ensuring that all members of society have access to the enriching experience of live music. This disc features some of Scotland’s finest artists perfoming recent commissions by some of the country’s brightest composing voices – William Sweeney, Eddie McGuire, Alasdair Nicolson and John Maxwell Geddes.

IMPORT Better known to most listeners as a performer and conductor, Dominique Vellard is also a talented composer. As one might expect, Vellard’s compositions are highly influenced by his connection to both the content and the styles of

the sacred music he has performed over his long career. His writing is primarily contrapuntal, born of his familiarity with Medieval and Renaissance repertoire. On this recording, the men’s voices take the role of traditional chantres, or cantors, while the women’s voices expand the music’s rich sound palette.

IMPORT The two Clarinet Sonatas, composed in 1894, were Brahms’s last chamber works. Knowing that he could count on the virtuosity of their dedicatee, the prodigious clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld (1856-1907), Brahms enthusiastically exploited all the expressive possibilities of the instrument. On this recording, clarinetist Lorenzo Coppola and pianist Andreas Staier find the perfect balance between the technical brilliance and the remarkable range of emotions present in these Autumnal works.

IMPORTDuring his lifetime, Reinhard Keiser was a celebrated opera composer. What is less well-known is his influence on the nascent genre of the Passion Oratorio. Keiser’s St. Mark Passion of 1717 clearly shows the composer’s operatic background as well as his firm grasp of dramatic and melodic diversity. J.S. Bach so admired the work that he performed Keiser’s St. Mark Passion in both Weimar and Leipzig. This release featuring the combined forces of Gli incogniti and the Ensemble Jacques Moderne conducted by Joel Suhubiette offer a fresh look at this seminal work of the sacred repertoire.

IMPORT SpiriTango Quartet’s first album, released in 2013 on the Polymnie label, was dedicated to the famous Astor Piazzolla. With this new recording, the quartet have chosen to draw attention to some of his lesser-known tangos, and to take their first

dedicated. Many scholars have ranked it among the composer’s finest scores. Some also say Shostakovich intended the work as a “tragedy to triumph” symphony, in the tradition of Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler. IMPORTOnce described as “one of the greatest living Bruckner conductors,” Georg Tintner studied conducting with Felix Weingartner at the Vienna State Academy. In 1938, Tintner left Austria and moved to New Zealand, where he became a citizen

in 1946. In 1954, he was named resident conductor of the National Opera of Australia, and he is credited with pioneering televised opera in Australia. This release from Testament features a previously unpublished BBC broadcast from June 1970 of Bruckner’s Symphony No.5. Surprisingly, this was his first performance of the work, and it was also the LSO’s first performance of its original unedited score.

IMPORTThis BBC recording of a concert from June 1963, never before released, is notable on several fronts. Not only is it a document of a magical evening of music-making, it marked a rare London meeting of superstar artists best known in America, (and who

were unable to make recordings together at the time due to contractual exclusivity). A capacity crowd at London’s Royal Festival Hall were treated to a program that included the legendary pianist Artur Rubinstein playing Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto, as well as Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ Symphony and Sibelius’s Symphony No.2 performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra led by Eugene Ormandy.

IMPORTThe compositions of Isaac Albéniz were deeply inspired by popular music. On this recording, which transcribes Albéniz’s piano work Rumores de la Caleta, guitarists Pedro Soler and Philippe Mouratoglou reveal the essential relationship between the classical language of the composer and that of traditional flamenco. Soler provides the spirit of the golden age of flamenco while Mouratoglou brings the rigor and formalism of classical training. Together they reveal a ‘cante primitive’ that combines passion and poetry in equal measure.

IMPORTFile in: JazzOriginally released in 2006 on Body & Soul, Look at Me Now was French singer Laïka Fatien’s first solo album. It was the work of an artist on the rise, and the record was hailed by the public and critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Produced by jazz specialist Gilles Pétard, the album features instrumentalists David El-Malek and Pierre de Bethmann providing wonderful accompaniment to sublimate the raw freshness of her singing. Fatien’s recent albums include 2010’s Nebula, produced by Me’Shell Ndegéocello, and 2012’s Come a Little Closer, arranged by Gil Goldstein and featuring trumpeter Roy Hargrove.

IMPORTFile in: JazzPush Up is a band that defies easy categorization. In their unique grooves, soul, funk, R & B, rock and jazz combine seamlessly in a hypnotic, colorful sound that simultaneously channels Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley and Funkadelic. Push Up exploded on the scene in 2010 with their Discograph album The Grand Day of Quincy Brown, a recording that told the story of the fictional character’s reflections on the meaning of life. The Day After takes up the story’s narrative, as Brown’s doubts, hopes and anger emerge. Push Up features the talents of jazz diva Sandra Nkaké, vocalist Karl Leury, slam poet Allonymous, Jean-Phi Dary on keyboards and Jî Drû on flute.

IMPORTFile in: JazzRecorded live in concert, Libres is the result of Karol Beffa’s and Raphaël Imbert’s mutual passion for freedom, both musical and intellectual. Pianist Beffa is one of the most gifted classical composers of his generation, a lecturer at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and winner of a Victoires de la Musique award in 2013. His works have been performed all over the world. Imbert is a self-taught jazz saxophonist, a talented improviser and researcher into music well beyond the sphere of jazz. On Libres, Imbert and Beffa become a single-minded duo where improvisation is a way of life, curiosity a philosophy and interaction an absolute necessity.

IMPORTFile in: JazzIn 2012, three white musicians living in France contemplated how to reinterpret the music of legendary blues master Robert Johnson. Very few jazz musicians have ever made the attempt, even

though those songs are part of the music’s cultural heritage. On this release, guitarist Philippe Mouratoglou, clarinetist Jean-Marc Foltz and bass player Bruno Chevillon offer a take on Johnson’s music that is both deeply personal and highly respectful.

IMPORTFile in: JazzSunday Morning by jazz pianist Bill Carrothers is a recording that comes straight from the heart. It brings together music of the church (where Carrothers learned to play the piano) and the cotton

fields of the American south. The result is something not quite jazz, not quite gospel and not quite classical, but something totally unique and glorious. Carrothers is joined here by his wife Peg Carrothers on vocals, clarinetist Jean-Marc Foltz, cellist Matt Turner, bassist Nicolas Thys and a full gospel choir.

IMPORT 180-gram Super Fidelity VinylFile in: Pop / RockReleased back in 1985 as a tribute to John Coltrane, Merci was the last studio effort by Magma, produced just before Christian Vander turned to his new project called Offering. Recorded from June 1982 to October 1984 at the Davout studios in Paris, Merci illustrates perfectly how Magma’s electric music moved unabashed towards a more acoustic and peaceful place. The album’s first four tracks introduce Magma’s early 80s rhythm ‘n’ blues beginnings, a swing machine of stunning melodic variety, drenched in soul, with ornate brass arrangements and a breathtaking choir. On the last two tracks, the music is stripped back to its essence, reaching inside the human soul looking for musical beauty in simplicity.

DOMESTICFile in: SoundtrackOrange Mountain Music presents the premiere recording of Philip Glass’s 1991 score to Errol Morris’s film A Brief History of Time, which explored the life and work of scientist Stephen Hawking.

This film marked the second of three famous collaborations between composer Glass and director Morris; the first was A Thin Blue Line and the third was The Fog of War, which won an Academy Award for best documentary. This 56-minute score for orchestra captures the ethos of Hawking’s journeys into the furthest realms of scientific thought and Morris’s probing cinematic style.

IMPORTFile in: SoundtrackArmand Amar is an Israeli-born French composer who grew up in Morocco. He won the 2010 César Award for Best Music Written for a Film for Radu Mihaileanu’s Le Concert. Amar’s latest score is for

Mediterranean – A Sea for All by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot. The film seeks to remind us about the sea’s history and inspire us to preserve it. The cradle of human civilization, today the Mediterranean region is home to 427 million people and 24 countries. In this film, shot entirely from the air, the Mediterranean is seen only from the sky, exploring even its most inaccessible countries such as Libya, Lebanon, Egypt and Algeria.
