Angela Hewitt’s recordings of Schumann’s solo piano works for Hyperion have been acclaimed by critics everywhere... Now she turns her attention to the works for piano and orchestra in a stunning release which includes the beloved Piano Concerto in A minor - one of the most treasured concertos in the repertoire - and two other works also written for Clara Schumann.
“Her awareness of counterpoint and her skill at putting it across suits Schumann’s colourfully woven textures to perfection.”

Angela Hewitt plays Schumann
Street Date: June 12, 2012
Concerto recordings dominate this month’s top classical releases, with offerings from Channel Classics, Hyperion and Praga. Violinist Rachel Podger returns to Vivaldi, joining forces with Holland Baroque on an SACD featuring the 12 concertos of La Cetra (p.6). The 57th volume in the always surprising Romantic Piano Concerto series looks northward with a recording of works by Swedish composer Adolf Wiklund played by pianist Martin Stürfalt (p.13). Praga launches a new series of SACD remasters of recordings by Sviatoslav Richter with a disc of Rachmaninov Piano Concertos recorded before the pianist began his international career (p.21). Helicon Records offers a very special release of a live recording of Mahler’s Symphony No.9 featuring the great Leonard Bernstein conducting the Israel Philharmonic (p.10). Other classical priorities include the third volume in Marc-André Hamelin’s stunning series of Haydn Piano Sonatas (p.11), a new recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 and Leonore Overture No.3 with MTT and the San Francisco Symphony (p.25) and an SACD remaster of Jordi Savall’s classic recording of Bach’s Orchestral Suites on Alia Vox (p.4). On the non classical front, the legendary Cuarteto Cedrón offers a delightful new disc of tangos and other Argentinean music (p.32).

IMPORTGoussan Aljanian, tenor soloist of Saint James Cathedral (Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem), is one of the world’s fi nest exponents of Armenian Church music. An expert in the musical and cultural aspects of the genre, Reverend Aljanian is able to bring out the unique mystical and spiritual fl avors of the Armenian musical art. On this new CD from Ad Vitam, Reverend Aljanian offers the listener a selection of traditional Armenian Easter hymns.
IMPORTEstablished in 2006, the period instrument ensemble La Petite Symphonie specializes in music of the eighteenth century. Led by artistic director and keyboard soloist Daniel Isoir, the ensemble offers their own unique perspective on the music of Haydn, Mozart, and other key composers from the period. Their interpretations focus on the spirit of chamber music that is present in most of the period’s repertoire. On this disc featuring three great piano concertos by Mozart, Isoir directs from the keyboard, in this case, a copy of a fortepiano by Johann Andreas Stein, the maker preferred by Mozart.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDCalled Ouvertüren in Germany because they began with a large-scale overture à la française, Bach’s Orchestral Suites feature a unique synthesis of the French and the Italian styles. The Leipzig Cantor did not content himself with creating sets of amiable dances — he revived the genre in his own manner, accenting the contrasts, refi ning the orchestration and introducing the sorts of contrapuntal elements that made the composer famous. Two centuries later, these joyous works are considered an indispensable treasure of the Baroque. This SACD reissue from Alia Vox is a follow up to the label’s recently released set of the Brandenburg Concertos. The multi-channel remastering enables us to fully enjoy the hearty, colorful and cheerful performances of Le Concert des Nations and Jordi Savall.

IMPORTThis is the fi rst-ever recording of Le Paradis perdu, a long-forgotten oratorio by Théodore Dubois (1837-1924), composed in the early 1870s. Winner of the Concours Musical initiated by the City of Paris in 1878, Le Paradis perdu is loosely based on episodes from Milton’s Paradise Lost. It is performed here by the choir Les Cris de Paris, accompanied by soloists of the ensemble Les Siècles, conducted by Geoffrey Jordain.
IMPORTOn this disc from Aparté, the acclaimed cellist Ophélie Gaillard pairs Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto with the complete music for cello and piano by Franz Liszt. The result is a fascinating juxtaposition of two very different worlds that combines passion with an expression of the mysteries of life. For the Schumann, Gaillard is accompanied by the National Radio Orchestra of Romania under the young conductor Tiberiu Soare. For the second half of the disc, Gaillard is joined by pianist Delphine Bardin (winner of the coveted Clara Haskil Prize).

agenda has been focused on music by Mozart and Bach. This release of the La Cetra concertos marks her very welcome return to music by the Venetian maestro, a composer with whom the violinist has a clear affi nity. As with La Stravaganza, there are many jewels in this set, some of which place even higher technical demands on the soloist. Several of the concertos also include fascinating and exotic experimental effects. Podger is supported here by the young and energetic Holland Baroque Society, whose innovative performance style and keen scholarship makes them a perfect partner in this repertoire. Bringing together some of Vivaldi’s best music, played by some of the world’s fi nest performers, this Channel Classics disc offers listeners a joyful, energetic and inspiring musical experience.

IMPORTAlthough much of the repertoire on this disc was originally conceived for large orchestra, the chamber versions offered here shed new light on familiar territory. In 1918, Arnold Schoenberg founded his Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen (Society for Private Musical Performance), whose mission was to promote contemporary works. A great admirer of Mahler, Schoenberg created a chamber version of the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen for the Society, while his student Erwin Stein penned a reduction of Busoni’s Berceuse élégiaque. Reiner Riehn, who completed Schoenberg’s chamber version of Das Lied von der Erde, wrote this arrangement of Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder for chamber orchestra. The disc is completed by Mahler’s rarely heard Quartettsatz for piano and string quartet. Contralto Sara Mingardo is accompanied by Musica Aurei conducted by Luigi Piovano.

ADVANCE REVIEW“ Mingardo is a natural partner for this work with her extraordinarily rich contralto depths and interpretive capabilities. She delivers Mahler’s literally breathtakingly long lines with effortlessly poised legato control. Her vocal tone is another delight, its warm bloom creating a lovely counterfoil to the viscerality of her accompaniment... one of the most expertly compiled and emotively performed you’ll find around.” — BBC

IMPORTThis rare gem from the archives of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra features a live recording with the great conductor Leonard Bernstein. Mahler was one of the composers that Bernstein focused on with great intensity in the last years of his life. This performance of Mahler’s deeply emotional ninth symphony adds a new facet to our understanding of the special relationship between these two greats of musical history. The performance was recorded live at the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv in August, 1985.

IMPORTHyperion presents a third double-volume release in Marc-André Hamel in’s much-pra i s ed s e r i e s o f Haydn’s keyboard sonatas. Haydn wrote around sixty keyboard sonatas and this selection of eleven focuses on those from the 1770s, including the great C minor sonata from the composer’s ‘Sturm und Drang’ period, with its dynamic contrasts and virtuoso demands. These are bookended by three from Haydn’s earliest output from the 1750s, most likely penned for his young female pupils to play, and the D major sonata written during the second of the mature composer’s triumphant London visits in 1794. In all these fascinating, idiosyncratic works, Hamelin wears his renowned virtuosity lightly, while playing with understated wit and the elegant, immaculate musicianship that has come to defi ne one of the greatest pianists of our time.

IMPORTJean Mouton was a Renaissance French composer and choirmaster, much acknowledged but more rarely recorded, who wrote a body of music that is both technically inventive and immediately appealing. Here Stephen Rice and The Brabant Ensemble perform a selection of Mouton’s eight-part music, two four-part motets, and his only fi ve-part Mass setting, the Missa Tu es Petrus. Sheer compositional skill aside, all these works demonstrate Mouton’s vivid and original imagination.
IMPORTAfter almost a decade, Hyperion is delighted to welcome back the world-famous St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir under its new director of music Andrew Carwood. Joined by the St. Paul’s Mozart Orchestra and a quartet of renowned soloists, Carwood leads sparkling performances of a selection of Mozart’s sacred music. Although they were commissioned to be sung at church services in Salzburg, all these compositions are suffused with Mozart’s typically unerring sense of dramatic pacing and a sensuous, operatic treatment of solo lines, as well as crisp and energetic choral writing.

IMPORTVolume 57 in Hyperion’s inexhaustible Romantic Piano Concerto series turns up another discovery — the music of Swedish composer Adolf Wiklund. These little-known but lusciously tuneful works are characterized by big-boned symphonic gestures reminiscent of Rachmaninov, all tempered with the Nordic clarity of Grieg. Wiklund’s two piano concertos are central to his output, and in fact they enjoyed considerable popularity in Sweden until as recently as fi fty years ago, when modernist sensibilities deemed them unfashionable. These glittering performances from Martin Sturfält and the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, directed by brilliant violinist-turned-conductor Andrew Manze, are bound to bring this unfairly neglected music back into general currency.

IMPORTBritish countertenor Iestyn Davies is one of the fastest rising stars on the concert and opera circuit. Following his highly acclaimed recording of Porpora cantatas, he returns for a second solo album with a selection of arias written for Gaetano Guadagni — the fi rst ‘modern’ castrato, famed all over Europe for the lyric purity of his voice and his powerful, naturalistic acting style. Not only did he enjoy a close artistic relationship with Handel, but Guadagni effectively created the role of Orpheus in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. For this recital, Davies is joined again by the renowned period-instrument band Arcangelo, directed by Jonathan Cohen.

La Dolce Volta presents two more essential reissues from the back catalog of the now defunct Calliope label. Originally released in the 1990s, the Talich Quartet’s highly-acclaimed set of Mozart’s complete String Quintets became an immediate staple of the catalog. Infrequently recorded or performed, these amazing works exemplify Mozart’s amazing command of texture, drama and emotional power in a chamber music setting. The Ensemble Philidor is featured in a collection of Mozart’s colorful music for wind instruments. From the early Divertimento K213 to the sheer perfection of the ‘Gran Partita’ Serenade, these works are integral to understanding Mozart’s genius.

Schubert’s fourth quartet comes from a time in the composer’s career when he was just forming his own personal style. Arriaga, the ‘Spanish Mozart,’ died at age twenty, three years after the composition of his third quartet. In it, Romantic freshness mixes comfortably with Classical formality. To explain the inspiration for this album the group said, “The sincerest tribute we could pay these three marvelous composers would be to allow ourselves to be guided by the sublime intuition they possessed at this moment in their lives.”
IMPORTAfter a highly acclaimed series of Brahms chamber music releases for Onyx, Britain’s preeminent chamber group the Nash Ensemble turns their attention to 19th-century Russian repertoire. Glazunov’s superbly crafted String Quintet of 1891 is coupled with Arensky’s two-cello second String Quartet, and Borodin’s unfinished Sextet for strings, written, according to the composer, in Mendelssohnian style ‘to please the Germans’ while he was in Heidelberg.

Here, Apekisheva makes her solo Onyx début with the work that brought the house down at her recent recital in London’s Wigmore Hall — Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. IMPORTThe Onyx début of distinguished violinist and conductor Augustin Dumay focuses on the music of Camille Saint-Saëns. The composer’s popular fi rst Cello Concerto is coupled with his superb but neglected Symphony No.1 and the late and rare double concerto for cello and violin entitled La Muse et le Poète. Dumay, music director of Japan’s Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, is joined by cellist Pavel Gomziakov for this unusual and fascinating program.
IMPORTThe third opera by the twenty-seven-year-old Sicilian Vincenzo Bellini, Il pirata marked an important step forward in his career. His fi rst score written for La Scala, Milan, it also represented his fi rst collaboration with Felice Romani, the leading librettist of the day — who would become his regular artistic partner. Il pirata was also the fi rst of Bellini’s works to reach an international audience. Its comparative neglect in our day is inexplicable. David Parry conducts this exceptional example of early romantic opera at its most dramatically potent. The 3CD set, a studio recording, comes with a lavishly illustrated book including a complete libretto and a comprehensive article and synopsis by Dr. Benjamin Walton.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDIn celebration of their twentieth anniversary, this essential release from Praga focuses on the artistry of the great Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter. In an all-Rachmaninov program, Richter is heard in the fi rst two Piano Concertos accompanied by the great conductor Kurt Sanderling in live performances recorded in the 50s — well before he began touring internationally. Praga’s hybrid SACD pairs remastered monophonic recordings of the concertos with four of Richter’s favorite Preludes recorded in stereo during his fi rst tour of North America in 1960. Praga has employed the best of today’s cutting-edge restoration techniques to present these important historical recordings in all their original glory.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis ambitious program by the Prazák Quartet and friends focuses on two key works by Arnold Schoenberg. The melodrama Pierrot Lunaire is a setting of poetry by Albert Giraud in which a singer/narrator delivers the poems in Sprechstimme style. It is paired with the Suite Op.29, one of the very fi rst twelve-tone pieces in classical sonata form. The work is one of Schoenberg’s lightest-textured and most attractive pieces. Haydn’s Seven Last Words of our Savior on the Cross was commissioned by the city of Cádiz in Andalusia for performance at a Good Friday service in 1786. Originally for string orchestra, the work was an immediate success and Haydn’s publisher soon issued a version for quartet and a piano reduction (the choral version dates from ten years later). Totally unprecedented in form, conception and content, the work is a marvel of western music and a prime example of Haydn’s genius.
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis hybrid multichannel SACD from Praga features a collection of ‘Rococo’ variations for cello and piano. In works that span several centuries, cellist Jeremy Findlay is featured in a program of works rich with virtuosity, humor and inventiveness. Two variations by Beethoven based on themes by Mozart are juxtaposed against works by modern composers Jirí Gemrot and Bohuslav
IMPORTClaude Debussy’s Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien is a fi ve-act musical mystery play that was produced in collaboration with poet and dramatist Gabriele d’Annunzio and designed as a vehicle for the great ballerina Ida Rubinstein. Unfortunately, in spite of Debussy’s transcendent score, the work’s fi rst production was not only unsuccessful, it was attended by scandal — the Archbishop of Paris requested Catholics not attend because the dancer playing St. Sebastian was a woman and a Jew. This new recording featuring the Orchestre National de France conducted by Daniele Gatti is a rare event.

I n S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 1 , Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony launched the Orche s t r a’s m i l e s t one Centennial Season with a celebratory gala concert at
Davies Symphony Hall dubbed “Fanfare for a New Century.” The gala concert was broadcast nationally on PBS in March and April 2012 as part of their Great Performances series. The gala was hosted by Bay Area author Amy Tan and directed for television by Gary Halvorson and features one of the leading artists of our time, violinist Itzhak Perlman performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. The concert opens with Aaron Copland’s vivid portrayal of American prairie life, the Billy the Kid ballet suite and concludes with Britten’s orchestral showpiece The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Capping off the concert is an encore of Bay Area composer John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine featuring moving images of San Francisco projected throughout Davies Symphony Hall. San Francisco Symphony at 100 also includes historical documentary features narrated by Amy Tan highlighting the orchestra’s early beginnings, its rich history of touring and its commitment to young people and innovations in media.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis release from Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony features Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 coupled with the Leonore Overture No.3. One of his most stirring works and also one that he considered among his best, Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 was immensely popular from its first playing. Recently, its powerful second movement was used to great dramatic effect in the seminal moments of the Oscar-winning movie The King’s Speech. While Beethoven wrote only one opera, he wrote multiple overtures for it, and the third of the series fully captures the joyful outcome of the story. Both recordings were taken from live concerts held at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco.

IMPORTAccording to Vasks, the three works for violin and orchestra featured here represent the polarity between optimistic hope for a better future and an anxious concern for the modern world. All are performed by the exceptional violinist Alina Pogostkina, superbly accompanied by the Sinfonietta Riga under the direction of Juha Kangas.
IMPORTBrown explained his compositional process by saying, “mobility of the sound elements within the work and the graphic provocation of an intense collaboration throughout the composer-notation-performance process — were for me the most fascinating new possibility for ‘sound objects’ as they had been for sculpture and painting.” On this disc, Sabine Liebner performs important works for piano by Earle Brown. Of special note is the world première of the recently discovered Home Burial, written in 1949 and based on a poem by the poet Robert Frost.
IMPORTThe sixth and fi nal volume in Wergo’s acclaimed series of recordings, Earle Brown — A Life in Music completes the label’s reissue of the eighteen LPs of Earle Brown’s legendary Contemporary Sound Series, recorded between 1960 and 1973. The fi rst disc in the set contains works by Cage and Wolff from the early 1960s. Disc two presents violinist Paul Zukofsky accompanied by pianist Gilbert Kalish in works by Crumb, Yun, Wuorinen and Cage. The fi nal disc contains works by South American composers Gerardo Gandini, César Bolaños, Marlos Nobre, Oscar Bazán, Manuel Enríquez and Alcides Lanza, performed by the New Sound Composers-Performers Group under the direction of Alcides Lanza.

These three audiophile SACD remasters from APO feature one of the great musical talents of our time — Ray Charles. Best known for his work in the idioms of R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and even successful forays into country, Charles also recorded infl uential jazz albums. 1961’s groundbreaking Genius + Soul = Jazz was produced by Creed Taylor and includes arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. Ray Charles and Betty Carter, also released in 1961, features startling dynamics, with Marty Paich’s arrangements showcasing both punchy brass and lush strings. The showstopper, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” topped the R&B charts upon its release. In his live performances, one was likely to hear shades of blues, soul, R&B, jazz, gospel, country and more in a single evening, and sometimes in a single song. All of these subtle shades and styles are evident on Ray Charles Live In Concert.

IMPORTFile In: BluesBlues harmonica player Jean-Jacques Milteau has travelled many different roads in both the geographical and musical sense of the term. From China to South Africa, from Nashville to New Orleans, from Ireland to Mexico, he is a musician whose curiosity knows no bounds. He welcomes new acquaintances and is always ready for any musical experience that might cross his path. In 1973, Milteau released his fi rst recording for Le Chant du Monde, as part of the label’s “Special Instrumental” collection. The label also released Blues Harp in 1980 and Just Kiddin’ in 1983. This double album retraces those first recordings and explores how Milteau subsequently became a blues legend and a worldwide ambassador of the blues harmonica.
