37 Composed to a libretto by Amin Maalouf and premiered at Salzburg in 2000 in a production by Peter Sellars, L’Amour de loin was Kaija Saariaho’s rst opera. is reinterpretation of the medieval narrative of the life of the troubadour Jaufré Rudel tackles a number of highly topical themes: love from afar, the virtuality of ideal love, and relations between East and West.

“One of the recorded marvels of our time... Jacobs is a terri c guide in Mozart, drawing playing of great air from his Freiburg band. Gardiner's Gramophone Award winning Arkiv set has held sway in Idomeneo for 17 years but I think it’s about to get a serious run for its money.” – GRAMOPHONE

Je an -Bap t i s t e Lu l l y i s considered by many scholars to be the father of French opera. This groundbreaking, multi award-winning 1987 recording launched a revival of interest in the genre and a veritable explosion of new recordings of French baroque music in general. Lully’s Atys is a tragédie en musique based on Ovid’s Fasti. The fi ve act opera, offering a timeless story of love and jealousy, was premiered in 1676 at the French royal court in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Over twenty years later, Les Arts Florissants’ performance of Atys remains a touchstone in the interpretation of French Baroque opera. Available for a limited time at mid-price in a deluxe CD+Book presentation, this release is timed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Les Arts Florissants.

“Few lovers of baroque opera will be disappointed with this latest recording by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants. What ensures the success of

this performance as much as anything is Christie’s lively rhythmic sense, and his informed handling of French music of this period...

This is a major achievement.”— GRAMOPHONE

As well as being a virtuoso pianist, Beethoven was also a competent violinist — an experience he put to good use in his ten sonatas for violin and piano. Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov have long cherished the project of recording them all. A behind-the-scenes documentary fi lmed on this occasion (and included in the set on DVD) gives an insight into these artist’s careful efforts to get as close as possible to the composer’s original intentions.

Composed in 1827 and fi rst performed privately for members of Schubert’s circle, Winterreise initially received a mixed reception. Now acknowledged as the greatest song-cycle ever penned, the work (here played in the original keys) receives a profound and probing reading from tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Paul Lewis, and marks the launch of a Schubert recording triptych.

78 Minutes / All Zones / Format 16:9 / 5.1 DTS PCM Stereo 2.0 / Subtitles: French, English, German 4 Elements / 4 Seasons combines the dance suite Les Éléments by Jean-Féry Rebel and Antonio Vivaldi’s concerto cycle The Four Seasons — two nearly contemporary works based on themes of nature — to create a fascinating choreographed concert. The result is nothing short of a new mode of performance practice that expands and enhances the audience’s connection to the traditional concert setting. Violin soloist Midori Seiler and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin are joined by Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola, a long time member of the dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests, who choreographed the orchestra and dances with them these early examples of program music. Clemens-Maria Nuszbaumer adapted the works for two small string orchestras that are placed directly across from each other on a large stage, each with a harpsichord in the continuo group. Live concerts in Europe of 4 Elements / 4 Seasons have been met with universal acclaim and this DVD vividly captures the raw power and excitement of what is defi nitely a groundbreaking musical event. Kurt Weill’s orchestral suite for wind orchestra debuted shortly after the première of his Threepenny Opera. Toch’s Egon und Emilie is a satire on opera based on a charmingly mischievous libretto by German poet and humorist Christian Morgenstern. Schulhoff ’s jazz oratorio HMS Royal Oak was inspired by an actual event dating from 1928 when a violent quarrel arose among three offi cers about music played by a band in the offi cers’ mess. The Ebony Band was founded in 1990 by Werner Herbers.

Music of the roaring 20’s

Upon its original release this disc was highly praised by Gramophone, which said, “Czech ensembles have long had a lock on recommendable recordings of Dvorak’s chambers music, and here’s one that goes to the head of the list. This fi rst recording made by the Talich Quartet in the West illustrates their absolute mastery of the works of Dvorak. More than any other ensemble the Talich manages to bring out not only the quivering immediacy of this music but also its profound roots. Sombre, full of contrast, extremely tense and dramatic, this version by the Talich Quartet is incomparable to any other, its pathos lending a very tragic colouring to the work. Amazing!”

Dutton presents a selection of rare and unrecorded Delius with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by David Lloyd-Jones. It includes the early tone poem Hiawatha in Robert Threlfall’s performing version and a trio of concertos brilliantly performed by violinist Philippe Graffi n and Sarah-Jane Bradley (viola). The program is rounded off by Sarah-Jane Bradley’s glowing reading of the viola version of the Caprice and Elegy.

To complete their survey of the ballets of Richard Arnell by conductor Martin Yates, Dutton presents the fi rst recording of the charming Harlequin in April and the fi rst stereo recording of Arnell’s best-known ballet, the tuneful Punch and the Child. The disc is completed by the second of Arnell’s violin concertos, the Concerto Capriccioso, here brilliantly played by Lorraine McAslan.

Susan Gritton’s solo recital with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins is focused on orchestral songs by Elgar and John Ireland. This enchanting and pioneering survey marks the fi rst time so substantial a survey of Elgar’s orchestral songs has been presented in one program. The nine John Ireland songs include the title piece Her Song from 1925, which makes a touching lyrical foil to Elgar’s exuberance.

The Canadian pianist Leslie De’Ath follows the success of his first Billy Mayerl anthology for Dutton, which was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone magazine, with a second volume of this delightfully tuneful, syncopated music. In addition to familiar numbers such as Bats in the Belfry, he ranges across Mayerl’s career from the Piano Exaggerations of 1926 to the late Waltz for a Lonely Heart of 1956.

The latest volume of Dutton’s Cecilia McDowall edition presents choral music and an orchestral song cycle under the sympathetic baton of George Vass. McDowall has a distinctive style that speaks directly to listeners, instrumentalists and singers alike. of special note are her Canterbury Mass (commissioned by the City of Canterbury Chamber Choir) and two delightful, unaccompanied choral pieces including the carol Now may we singen. A lovely and distinctive collection.

Violist Roger Chase and pianist Michiko Otaki follow Chase’s pioneering Dutton recording of viola concertos by Stanley Bate and W H Bell (CDLX 7216) by celebrating the Tertis tradition, again playing Lionel Tertis’ own Montagnana viola. Works featured here include Bax’s Concert Piece, York Bowen’s Melodies a Sonata by Bliss, and Rubbra’s Meditation on a Byzantine Hymn ‘O Quando in Cruce’.

Reconstructing the musical entertainment that took place in Neapolitan palaces, Antonio Florio leads La Capella dei Turchini as they continue the musical journey through the treasures of Naples they began for Opus 111. Tenor soloist Pino de Vittorio is a member of the early music ensemble Cappella della Pietá dei Turchini, also directed by Antonio Florio. With this group he has toured extensively performing Renaissance and Baroque repertory of Naples. Repertoire on the disc includes vocal and instrumental works by Giuseppe de Majo, Nicola Ugolino, Leonardo Leo, Niccolo Grillo and Nicola Fiorenza.

In this latest volume from The Cardinall’s Musick’s acclaimed Byrd series, the composer’s overtly Catholic agenda is clearly displayed. All of the music on this disc is drawn from the fi rst volume of Gradualia published in 1605. The music is a world away from the dark broodings of the Cantiones Sacrae from 1589 and 1591. In these later publications Byrd achieves a fusion of styles, mixing the energy, wordpainting and rhythmic vitality of the secular madrigal tradition with the spirituality and liturgical context of words from the Mass and Divine Offi ce.

The two works recorded here have an interestingly close musical relationship that is belied by their radically different sound-worlds. Prokofi ev’s fi rst work for cello and orchestra was abandoned by the composer after an unsuccessful premiere, and the full score remained unpublished for years. However, a performance by Mstislav Rostropovich persuaded the composer to pen a dramatic revision of the original concerto. The resulting Symphony-Concerto is now acknowledged as one of the composer’s late masterpieces. Both works are played here by the young German virtuoso Alban Gerhardt.

Ownership of the ML Lutebook has been attributed to a number of court musicians since its discovery in 1912, but it was the name ‘Margaret’ occasionally scrawled throughout the copy that caught the imagination of lutenist Elizabeth Kenny. Kenny connects the manuscript with similar ones belonging to Jane Pickeringe, Margaret Board and Lady Ann Blount, where a remarkable level of virtuosity was associated with private performance by women. It includes works by Dowland, Johnson, Bacheler and others and summons up an exhilarating musical world infl uenced by the court. Kenny, one of today’s fi nest lutenists, performs this entrancing collection with aplomb and fl air.

Recorded and released in the anniversary year of both Handel and Haydn, Hyperion presents an effusive celebration of the two composers, performed by an artist whose renditions of 17th- and 18th-century keyboard works on the piano have received the highest possible acclaim. Angela Hewitt’s trademark clarity of line, singing tone and instinctive musicality are perfectly suited to the urbane elegance of the works recorded here. In a fascinating and personal booklet note, Hewitt takes the listener through her own childhood experiences of the works of Handel and Haydn that led her to select the works for this disc and includes an interesting discussion of historical performance practice. This is an enchanting release that will delight Angela’s legion of fans.

Stravinsky’s bal let music c o n t a i n s s o m e o f t h e composer’s most dazzling inspirations, and his work with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes brought him to international

attention before the fi rst world war. But it was through his collaborations with Diaghilev’s protégé George Balanchine that Stravinsky evolved the individual ‘neo-classical’ style of his own that is arguably his greatest contribution to the musical language of the twentieth century. Contemporary audiences were thrilled by the innovative nature of these works. Walter Terry wrote in the Herald Tribune at the premiere of Agon that it was, “quite possibly the most brilliant ballet creation of our day.” Five of Stravinsky’s ballets have been recorded on two discs (the second to be released in January) by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under maestro Ilan Volkov. Volkov’s mastery of a range of Russian music is well-represented on Hyperion and has been greatly acclaimed on the concert platform.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDValery Gergiev is joined by two outstanding singers for his latest LSO Live release featuring Bartók’s one-act opera. Despite being one of the greatest ever interpreters of the role of Bluebeard on stage, this is Sir Willard White’s fi rst complete recording of Bluebeard’s Castle. His Judith is the outstanding young Russian-born, Berlin-based mezzo Elena Zhidkova. Sir Willard performs extensively around the world during 2009 including appearances at The Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala in Milan. Elena Zhidkova will appear with the LSO and Gergiev at the BBC Proms and make her debut at the Mariinsky Theatre. Bartók’s only opera is a dark and intense work, involving only two characters. Bluebeard’s young bride persuades him to open seven doors in his castle in order to let light into the grim interior. Behind each she fi nds increasingly disturbing sights, until behind the fi nal door she discovers Bluebeard’s former wives and learns her fate.

“It is difficult to resist Valery Gergiev in full flow. He summons such reserves of power and commitment from the LSO that one cannot help but be swept along.”

Soli Deo Gloria is proud to release the third installment in their successful Brahms Symphony series featuring John Eliot Gardiner and his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. The recordings from this series are drawn from Gardiner’s two-year Brahms and his Antecedents

project which not only celebrated Brahms the composer, but traced the roots from which Brahms drew his creative inspiration. No other composer of the 19th century had such a close and informed relationship to music of the past and for this reason, great choral works by composers as varied as Bach, Schütz and Mendelssohn are performed alongside Brahms’ compositions. This album features Brahms’ grand, heroic third symphony alongside choral works including his setting of Schiller’s dirge Nänie and Goethe’s dramatic ballad Gesang der Parzen.

“Gardiner’s Brahms will appeal to those who want performance to spring from intellectual curiosity and musicological investigation.”

Wergo’s Earle Brown Contemporary Sound Series focuses on the extraordinary world of contemporary and avant-garde music that fl ourished in Europe, the United States, Latin America and Japan in the 1960s and early 1970s. Recorded between 1960 and 1973, the original eighteen LPs that comprise this series have been highly sought after in the secondary market since 1978 when they were discontinued. These rare and historically important recordings of international avant-garde music have been carefully digitized and remastered by the Earle Brown Music Foundation. Brown was a major force in the world of contemporary classical music He studied mathematics and engineering at Northeastern University, and attended the Schillinger House School of Music for techniques of composition and orchestration. His work with new notations, scoring methods and performance attitudes led to his development of graphic, improvisational and “open-form” scores. Wergo will release six 3-CD sets of these recordings between now and 2011. Each set will contain three CDs in jewel boxes including the original liner notes and cover art.

File in: World / Dusk-Core / Twi-FiLes Triaboliques are full of surprises, but the biggest of all is that it took this long to happen. rivermudtwilight, the breathtaking collaboration from multi-instrumentalists Ben Mandelson, Lu Edmonds and Justin Adams is the culmination of a decades-long, indefatigable quest by these voracious visionaries to absorb and utilize the planet’s panoply of sound. Having exercised their skills individually within numerous diverse settings, it was perhaps inevitable that this “meeting of the ancient guild of post-punk, Anglo, globetrotting string players reveling in idiosyncrasy,” as Adams describes it, would eventually come to fruition. The album comprises eleven exquisitely rendered tracks — most composed by the British trio — that employ a battery of conventional and exotic instruments, multilingual vocals and a seamless merger of international infl uences. These diablos of dusk-core offer new distressed string band music for the 21st Century. The Desert, the Delta, the Steppes and the Underground — all are united in what Mandelson likes to call “Triabolique Twi-Fi.”

File in: Cajun & ZydecoZydeco Feeling is among the strongest front-to-back offerings in the APO Records catalog. Accordion wizard Major Handyoffers raw, bare emotion, building and smoldering, the performance on each song

seemingly inspiring the next, and all from an artist few outside of southwest Louisiana will have ever heard. Handy is an artist of uncommon power and energy, someone who lays into each of his songs, not “overplaying,” mind you, just fl at giving it. Buckwheat Zydeco, the most commercially successful of today’s Zydeco artists, leads the backing band here. Buckwheat, known best on accordion, instead plays his fi rst and still favorite instrument, the Hammond B3 organ. Ace guitarist Paul “Lil’ Buck” Sinegal, unquestionably the best Zydeco guitarist of the last 30 years, is also onboard, blistering when appropriate without ever stepping on the groove. And top-call bassman Lee Allen Zeno anchors it all, capping what’s truly an all-star cast.

File in: Jazz Indian-born violinist and composer John Mayer’s groundbreaking recordings from the 1960’s with his band Indo-Jazz Fusions probably gave birth to the term “world fusion.” For this CD, the brand new First Hand label has remastered some of Mayer’s fi nest work. Even though Etudes was recorded in 1969, it still sounds remarkably current. In many ways, this kind of fusion has made a comeback in recent years. Radha Krishna is an unfl inchingly erotic musical play, featuring excellent sax work from Tony Coe. The Teak Project is a mesmerizing modern-day incarnation of John Mayer’s work, featuring none other than his own son, Jonathan Mayer, a virtuoso sitar player. He is joined by Justin Quinn on guitar and Neil Craig on tabla for a disc rich in hypnotic jazz improvisations. Their musical infl uences range from British folk to Indian classical to modern jazz.
