VORWORT.
Sätzchen in doppelter Weise notirt.
Dr. S. Jadassohn.
PREFACE.
ihe present book is to be regarded as a suplement to my
Manual of Harmony: it containes a great many Exercises and
Examples in all keys — some easier and otliers more difficult than
those in the Manual — so arranged and invented, that the pupil
receive a perfect knowledge of all chords and practical exercises
in their connection and at the same time a thorough preparation
for the studies iu Counterpoiut.
The examples following in the second part are given as a
guide to the exercises contained in the several paragraphs. They
give many hints to the pupil as to the manner in which to solve
his own exercises. It will be of great advantage to him to ana-
lyze carefully the examples here given referring to those para-
graphs. The thorough-bass-figuring as well as the indication of
the degree-numbers of the chords and the course of modulation
must be added at the open space above and below the Bass. These
examples will give the most practical instruction for the improve-
ment of the melody iu Soprano and for the correct leading of
the other voices.
To make the survey of the examples, written in four different
clefs in the manner of a score easier to the pupil the first small
movements are written in different ways. The pupil in the be-
ginning can in this manner, write his own examples ; he will than
soon gain a ready survey of the reading and writing of a score,
written in four different clefs.
Leipzig, February 1891.
Dr. S. Jadassohn.

*) The »Open position« or »Close po-
sition« at the beginning of some of these
and of the following exercises is not to
be understood to mean , that the whole
exercise must be worked in the same
position. The position must change
according to the leading of the voices.

NB. III, § 20, Beisp. 63 u. die Anmerk.)
NB. The leading of the tenor and altofrom a diminished into a perfect fifth isnot to be found fault with, as the con-trary motion of the leading tone in thesoprano cover the fifths in the middlevoices. /Compare «Jadassohn, the Art toModulate« Chapt. Ill, § 20, Ex. 63 andthe remark.)
