Introduction
The history of the lumber unions in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia is a ninteresting yet hardly-studied subject . The developments which led to the formation of theInternational Woodworkers of America in 1937 affected the structure and subsequent courseof the union. Unionism arrived in the Peeific Northwest region of the United States a ful lten years before it took hold in British Columbia, and this affected the makeup of the seg -ments of the I .W.A. The Pacific Northwest's union experiences were inaugurated with craf tunionism and only slowly and painfully did it advance to industrial union status . In B .C .however, due to the ten-year lag industrial unions were in control from the start .
In B .C . the predecessor of the I .W.A . was the Lumber Workers' Industrial Union ( a one-time affiliate of the One Big Union ) . On April 4, 1936 the L .W.I .U . decided to affiliat ewith the American Federation of Labor ; they were to be grouped under the A .F .L .'s Carpentersorganization . Harold J. Pritchett was elected president of the newlyi.affiliated L .W .I .U. .Pritchett had first come into public prominence in 1931 when as a shingle weaver he had bee nelected chairman of the Fraser Mills strike committee .
There was a great deal of discontent with the A .F .L. in the lumbering industry on theWest Coast . Representatives of all locals in the newly-organized union met on Stetember 18 ,1936 and discussed the situation . The result of their discussions was the formation of th eFederation of Woodworkers ( known as the 1 .4 . . after July 15, 1937) and the man elected a spresident was Harold Pritchett .
Born in Birmingham, England in 1904, Harold Pritchett's parents emigrated to Canada in1912 settling in Port Moody, B .C . At the age of 15, Pritchett went to work in a sawmill an dwithin two years he was actively involved in the labour movement . As well as being the firs tInternational President of the I .W .A . Harold Pritchett served as President of I .W.A . DistrictCouncil No .l, secretary of the Vancouver Labour Council (CCL) and secretary of the B .C . Fed-eration of Labour . He was also a member of the C .1 .0 . Housing Committee . After having servedas International President of the I .W .A . from 1937 until 1940 Harold Pritchett resigned . Thiswas as the result of the denial of an entry visa into the U .S .A . due to his Communist affilia -tion.
In October, 1948 Harold Pritchett led an unsuccessful attemptte form the independen tWorkers' Industrial Union of Canada . After four tumultuous years the W.I .U.C . rejoined theI .W.A . .
The papers in this collection are mainly composed of the records of the I .W .A- . Inter-national and the I .W.A . District Council No.l from the years 1937 until 1950 . There are al-so lesser amounts of L .W .I .U ., L .S .W .U ., W.I .U.C . materials as well as a small compilatio nof Harold Pritchett's personal papers mainly from the 1950s to the 1970s .
The material has, been divided by the various organizational structures represented inthe collection as cane seen in the table of contents .
