HARBOR HOUSE 2017
One of the things our campers like best about summer with Harbor House is the
variety of activities we provide. Our schedule has been carefully planned to give
campers a consistent structure without making the week routine. We are always on
the go, travelling across the island and Downeast Maine on our mini-buses in search
of something new to see and experience. Our knowledge of the local area lets us get
off the beaten path and enjoy out of the way locations where kids can have the whole
place to themselves. This not only leaves plenty of room for spontaneous fun, but
builds a sense of camaraderie that makes our camp special.
We believe summer is a great time for kids to exercise their imagination and develop
their creative side. In addition to more traditional arts and crafts activities we provide
projects which require critical thinking skills to solve practical problems. Building rafts
that can support a camper, models boats that can navigate a rocky stream, or toy cars
that move under their own power are just some the opportunities campers have to
be inventive and original. We also love to encourage kids with a flair for the dramatic.
Whether it’s putting on a skit with a few friends or showing off some new dance
moves our campers are always welcome to express their artistic talents.
Harbor House coordinates recreational sports leagues all year long, and offering
opportunities for youth to develop their athletic skills has always been part of our
summer programming. We also go beyond traditional sports activities to provide
every camper with the chance to play to their strengths. Whether it’s reaching the
summit of a mountain, leaping off a diving board for the first time or navigating an
obstacle course, at Camp MAX we maintain an active schedule that keeps kids moving
and challenges them to accomplish goals they can be proud of.
Thanks to a collaboration with the Southwest Harbor Public Library, Camp MAX also
offers an optional summer reading program as part of our camp schedule. Campers
can take advantage of our summer reading collection and earn special rewards
donated by local businesses.
Week 1 June 19- 23: This week we’ll head out with our buckets, nets, specimen trays and magnifiers as we explore pond life in the many freshwater sources around the island.
Week 2 June 26 - 30: The Olympics returns ahead of schedule as we revisit a popular theme from last summer. Campers will band together to represent their countries in a variety of challenges at venues across the island. There will be opportunities for everyone to contribute as their team goes for the gold.
Week 3 July 3 - 7: We’ll explore the nooks and crannies of the national park this week while working on this year’s Acadia Quest. The Quest, put together by Friends of Acadia, will challenge us to learn new things about the place we call home and allow us to give back to the park through volunteer work. Note: no camp on July 4th!
Week 4 July 10 - 14: Treasure maps, scavenger hunts, geocaching, hide-and-seek games - if it has to do with searching for hidden treasure we will put it on the schedule this week. There is also the option to attend the morning session of Future Trojans Basketball Camp this week (see the back for details).
Week 5 July 17 - 21: Our campers always show up with an impressive range of skills and this week each one will get a chance to shine. Singers, comedians, dancers, acrobats, magicians, artists, athletes – bring it on and show us what you’ve got while cheering on your friends during this week’s Camp MAX Has Talent celebration.
Week 6 July 24 - 28: Mount Desert Island is a great place to celebrate the arts, and we will get the creative juices flowing this week with a variety of projects and activities. Painters, actors, musicians - there will be something for everyone this week (even critics!).
Week 7 July 31 - August 4: There’s an impressive diversity of boats on our island: working boats, tour boats, pleasure boats, small craft, gigantic cruise ships, boats that are built here and boats which only stop by to visit. We’ll take advantage of all these opportunities to learn more about the variety of boats in the area, build some of our own, and spend as much time on, near, or in the water as the weather allows.
Week 8 August 7 - 11: It’s time to put our creativity, problem solving, and teamwork skills to the test as we tackle a series of engineering challenges as part of our Design Squad week. Campers will work together in groups to develop unique solutions to each challenge before sharing their creations with the rest of camp.
Week 9 August 14 - 18: During this week’s Double Dare competition campers will work together to answer trivia questions, tackle surprising challenges, and complete crazy obstacle courses. Which team will have that special combination of brains and guts to rise to the top? We’ll find out!
