Today’s Requirements

• As we move to fully digital and hybrid systems in both standard and high definition formats, the requirements for processing are increasing.

• On a worldwide basis, high definition is becoming more and more prevalent — with the use of wide screen and surround sound becoming more popular in home theatre environments.

• Because the requirements for processing are increasing, demands for more functionality are increasing in parallel

Page 5: Harris Software Systems NAB2006 Plan

#5 assuredcommunications™ Apr 10, 2023

Increased Functionality Required

• Increased functionality includes:– Up, down, cross and aspect ratio conversion for use in hybrid

facilities.– Analog, digital compressed and embedded audio.– Multi-channel audio for surround sound and multiple language

applications.– Advanced audio processing such as decompression and

compression.• This processing (especially audio compression) requires

increased video delay for proper lip sync.– SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol).

• This popular protocol, which is used in the telecom industry for monitoring equipment, has become an important requirement in the television industry.

Page 6: Harris Software Systems NAB2006 Plan

#6 assuredcommunications™ Apr 10, 2023

Increased Functionality Required

• Increased functionality includes:– The ability to take legacy analog signals into the digital domain

(with the best processing at the best price).• This step is important — especially before upconverting and

compressing video signals.– Interfaces for high definition including optical fiber and DVI.

• ~ Optical fiber is required for long cable runs (>100m / 300ft.).• ~ DVI is becoming more popular as an interface into LCD and

plasma type picture displays.

– Intelligent input processing for alarming and auto-switchover —

for purposes of reducing downtime.

Page 7: Harris Software Systems NAB2006 Plan

#7 assuredcommunications™ Apr 10, 2023

Increased Functionality Required

• Increased functionality includes:– Increased use of metadata:

• Digital video and audio are the data “essence” of a program signal.

• In today’s facilities, there are many forms of “data about the essence” (or metadata) that travel along with the video and audio signals.

• Requirements vary — in some cases, a transparent metadata pass-through is required. In other cases, you may wish to change the metadata.

– Dual power supplies for increased reliability in critical situations.– Front-to-back forced airflow.

Page 8: Harris Software Systems NAB2006 Plan

Options – SDTV Noise Reduction

• SDTV Noise Reduction– Improved NR over DPS-575– 3-Dimensional SDTV Digital Noise Reduction– Impulse noise reduction, Gaussian random noise reduction,

compression blocky-ness and mosquito artifact reduction, and sharpening and softening of images

– Particularly effective for the reduction of satellite noise, the impulse noise reducer automatically detects impulse noise and applies the median filter when necessary

– The recursive 3D directional filter removes Gaussian noise and compression artifacts, which include blocking artifacts and mosquito noise

– The directional softening/sharpening filter can be used in various applications. For example, the softening filter can be used as compression pre-filter to reduce mosquito noise. The sharpening filter can be used to enhance picture appearance

– For MPEG pre-processing applications, this option provides entropy reduction prior to encoding.

Simulcast Mode

• Simulcast mode allows you to choose any two inputs and switch between them using a GPI (General Purpose Interface)

• For X75HD units, you can switch between HDTV and SDTV inputs. There is four to six frames of black between switches, sufficient for non-critical on-air or for backup on-air use.

• Audio is switched quietly at the same time

X75 Audio Capabilities

• Three audio options available– 8 channel internal processing– 16 channel internal processing– 32 channel internal processing

• X75-DPS-575 and X75SD modules use the 8 channel option

• X75HD use the 16 channel option

• For the 32 ch option, use a X75SD or X75HD and add the option

• All have 4 group embed/de-embed

• If an audio option is not installed, embedded audio passes from SD-SDI to SD-SDI, but does not pass from HD-SDI/fiber to HD-SDI/fiber.

Control Architecture

• The X75HD can be provided with a local control panel or can also be controlled in the following ways:

– The built-in Web Server with thumbnail

– There are two 10/100-Base T Ethernet ports - one dedicated to control, monitoring and for streaming a low bit rate, low frame rate video only thumbnail. The other port is dedicated to streaming MPEG 4 CIF and AAC stereo video and audio for monitoring purposes.

– A remote panel

– Local and remote control panels associated with installed DPS-575s can control X75HD through the text menu system.

– For those who have adopted or may adopt the industry standard SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), an SNMP agent can be added as an option.

– Binary Protocol (EP Extended Protocol) is available for those who wish to write their own software application for controlling and monitoring X75HDs.

– The X75HD is CCS (Command Control System) compliant for use with Navigator, Pilot, Co-Pilot, RCP-CCS-1U and the Nucleus User Customizable Control Panel. A specific GUI (Graphical User Interface) has been developed for control, monitoring and diagnostics purposes.

X75OPT-STR MPEG4 Streaming Monitoring

• Monitoring a video signal from a remote location is difficult.• If an Internet connection can be provided from the remote location

to the monitoring station, the X75 has a built-in web server with control, monitoring and a small thumbnail for video.

• The small thumbnail has now been made larger, but it is not full motion, only a frame sent every 5-300 seconds (user adjustable).

Page 132: Harris Software Systems NAB2006 Plan

#132 assuredcommunications™ Apr 10, 2023

X75OPT-STR MPEG4 Streaming Monitoring

• For users who wish to monitor full motion video with a higher resolution than a thumbnail and audio, the X75OPT-STR MPEG4 Monitoring Streaming Module Option is now available.

• MPEG4 and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) codecs provide CIF (Common Image Format - 352 x 240 for 525 line systems and 352 x 288 for 625 line systems) resolution and audio (stereo 64kB) streaming for monitoring purposes

• Uses secondary Ethernet port

• The quality of the streamed image is such that lower 1/3 graphics and keyed logos can be seen without “mosquito noise” around the edges of the graphics (~200k/bits to ~1Mbit/s adjustable).

• Not for “broadcast” purposes. (ie: not MPEG4.1, AVC, AVI, JVT, MPEG4 Part 10 (H.264) or SMPTE VC-1 (WM9 or Windows Media 9)).

• Navigator software supports the viewing of multiple X75s over your control/monitoring/logging network.

• Apple QuickTime 7.0 can be used to view the signal, as well.

X75OPT-STR MPEG4 Streaming Monitoring

• X75s shipped before approximately November 1, 2005 need to go through a “bicycle program”.

• If you purchase the X75OPT-STR within 6 months from product release, you will get a free upgrade consisting of a refurbished X75 in their configuration with the X75OPT-STR installed. After 6 months, there will be a cost associated with this.

• For those who own a X75 shipped after Nov 1, 2005, they can order and install the X75OPT-STR in the field

X75OPT-V2A Video to Audio Timing Tool

• The Issues•  • Timing video with audio signals is difficult in today’s TV environment.•  • All devices should provide the correct video to audio delays so that lip sync is maintained.•  • This is not the always the case.•  • Issue #1: If you process video and audio together, the processes add

their own propagation times. A device should automatically add delay as needed in the video and audio paths so that lip sync is maintained (considering that “lip sync” was correct at the input).

•  • Issue #2: If you send a video and audio signal to a distant location, it is

ot known whether the video and audio signals have passed hrough different processes each adding their own processing times.

Page 137: Harris Software Systems NAB2006 Plan

#137 assuredcommunications™ Apr 10, 2023

X75OPT-V2A Video to Audio Timing Tool

• The Solution

• A simple means of verifying video to audio timing in a single location or from any location anywhere.

• The X75 was designed to automatically provide the correct audio delay when adding video processing tasks.

• With a free code update, all X75s will generate a video and audio test signal that is a robust, off-line test that can survive conversions such

as analog/digital, embed/de-embed, compress/uncompress, up/down/cross conversions.

• All X75s that have the V2A option installed allows you to record and playback the test signal on a tape or hard drive transport and then measure relative video to audio timing from any X75 that device is “listening”.
