Comparison of Treatment Methods for Anorexia Nervosa
• I am investigating the different treatment methods for anorexia nervosa and their effectiveness.
• The success rates for anorexia nervosa are still not good, with about 10%-20% remaining significantly below healthy body weight and as much as 10% starving themselves to death
Brooke Harrison
• My hypothesis is that participants (1) receiving Mausdley model of family-based care will improve more than those undergoing in-patient care and (2) those on anti-depressant medication will improve more than those not on medications.
• Design: – My design is a 2 treatments (in-patient vs. family- based) X 2
drug (drug vs. no drug at all).– My DV will be measured of the Global Assessment of Functioning
scale from 1 to 100 (1 being worst and 100 being best). – 50 participants who meet the DSM-IV-TR criteria for anorexia
nervosa will be randomly placed into either in-patient or family-based care. Then they will randomly be selected to either take anti-depressants or no medication at all. The DV will be measured by a combination of therapist's opinion, weight restoration, and questionnaires.
Results• The DV for family-based care + medication
is 60, family-based care – medication is 55, in-patient care + medication is 50, and in-patient care – medication is 40.
• The results are positively correlated• There will be a main effect for both IVs• There will be an interaction• This data proves that family-based care is
most effective, especially in conjunction with medication
