M.Thesis: Evolution of retail Interiors in India in last 15 years

Overview of 15 years

Concluding note:

The evolution of retail interiors in India along the last 15 years was primarily governed by the economic reforms and the changing consumer demographics. These key drivers of the evolution were further aided by other factors, which have directly or indirectly impacted the evolution by affecting the key drivers in some or the other way, or were an outcome of the changing key drivers, which then affected the evolution of retail interiors directly. The secondary factors like changing social frameworks, changing per capita income of the consumer groups, technological development, the introduction of international brands, Internet revolution and the social media were some of the factors, which have extensively aided the positive and rigorous change of the retail interiors in India along the last 15 years towards a more glocal identity. This has made retail design an innovative and service-oriented lucrative industry and evolved it into a hotspot for designers to express their creativity through various design innovations and taxonomical borrowings as the industry largely worked and will continue to work on creating unique identities along with creating contextual associations and communications with the consumers post introduction of the International brands due to FDI reforms. IMIAD Workshop Wood Group

Process About the workshop:A collaborative craft and design workshop hosted by CEPT University in 2015 for the academic year 2015-2016. This workshop was a compulsory workshop for all the students perceiving the master degree of IMIAD. The students from five different universities out of which four were from Europe and CEPT from India came together for a workshop that was hosted by CEPT University workshop and the theme of the workshop was collaborative craft and design. The workshop was divided into three parts the first was understanding of the craft and its practice in its original context. The second part dealt with understanding the crafts and its integrities through various hands-on experiences before the final stage which, was to explore the technique and come up with a unique prototype exploring the strength of the craft and its technique.

The workshop was a collaborative workshop and was conducted in collaboration with the CEPT students , International students and craftsperson’s followed by a public exhibition.

About Me

Professional Statement:My work as a junior architect in a moderate size firm for a year exposed me directly to the various attributes of getting a design to life. The direct contact with the client and the field made me analyse things in much depth and this started reflecting in my designs. Handling projects from the scratch help me deal with design problems at contextual and conceptual level, gave me knowledge of services, materials and specifications, the ways to present and express design ideas in graphical and written language, chalking out the project finances. This developed me into a multidirectional designer. My exposure to various typologies of projects at Carbon Space Mumbai and Em Square in Dubai have developed my thought process. The exposure to multinational firm and the intensive discussion wth my mentor pushed me to consider my 3rd-year dream of doing masters. The exchange semester in Switzerland exposed me to how the different culture can affect the way building typologies can vary in design. The long-lived interest in retail and fashion has pushed me to do my master's thesis on the evolution of retail interiors with an aim of finding a job related to the same.I hope an engagement with your company would help me achieve my long-term goal of becoming a good and responsible design professional.

I personally believe that as a person one always keeps on growing from one thing into other. As a teenager, I was always interested in architecture and five years of intensive training at my under graduation school allowed me to developed an inclination towards knowing things in detail. After working for a year this same quest for knowledge got me back to complete my masters in IMIAD at CEPT university. With the increase in exposure, I believe to come out as a better grown professional.
