HART technology The vast majority of measuring instruments installed in the last decade are equipped with a HART communication interface. Thus, HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transmitter) is a well established industrial standard that is proven in the field and which has an installed base of over 35 million devices.

HART is a “Smart” technology, i.e. it supports the simultaneous transmission of a 4...20 mA analog signal and digital communication over the same pair of wires:• The 4...20 mA analog signal is

used for fast transmission of the measured value

• The digital HART signal is used to read and write device data

•WirelessHART enhances the HART protocol by providing wireless communication

3HART protocol

HART commands HART is a master-slave protocol for point-to-point and multidrop communication. It determines how data are to be presented and transferred between master and slave.

The HART protocol defines three classes of commands:•Universal commands offer a basic

set of functions and are supported by all HART instruments.

• Common practice commands offer functions which are optional, but which are supported by many HART instruments.

•Manufacturer-specific commands allow access to device data that are not standardized in HART, e.g. linearization, advanced diagnosis functions.

Interchangeability The universal commands access approximately 40 standard data sets that are present in all HART devices. This supports the interchangeability of the field devices.

The data sets include•Device identification:

device tag, supplier, device type and revision, device serial number

•Device settings: upper and lower range values, upper and lower sensor limits, process value damping, last adjustment date

• Process variables: primary variable plus secondary measurements and multivariable parameters

HART protocol

Device descriptions The HART master knows which parameters a device supports through so-called device descriptions (DDs). Since DDs can only map simple functions, so-called electronic device descriptions (EDDs) are finding increasing use for more complex devices.

FDT (Field Device Technology) builds on device descriptions. Device information

carriers are so-called Device Type Managers (DTMs). FDT maps all device functions including enhanced diagnosis functions such as envelope curves for ultrasonic and radar transmitters.

Device operation Plant Asset Management systems use FDT or DD/EDD technology. FDT operating tools include:• FieldCare• PACTware•ABB Composer, Control Builder,

Fieldbus Builder, etc.• Invensys I/A Series•Other FDT applications

Endress+Hauser fully supports FDT technology and offers DTMs for all its HART devices.

DD/EDD operating tools include:•Asset Management Solution (AMS)• Process Device Manager (PDM)• Field Xpert SFX350/SFX370•Other DD/EDD applications

Endress+Hauser offers both DDs and EDDs for its HART devices and integrates them into the above mentioned tools.

HART integration HART devices are integrated into a control system via the 4...20 mA analog signal. The HART signal itself is used mostly for parameterization and diagnosis. This may be done on a point-to-point basis, or centrally from the control room.

When HART is used for Plant Asset Management, information must be gathered at regular intervals from the field device. This entails tapping the HART signal on the 4...20 mA line. Depending upon the system architecture involved, a number of solutions exist.

Solutions for device management•Direct access (point-to-point):

for parameterization and diagnosis, the HART signal is taken directly from the two 4...20 mA signal wires by FieldCare or Field Xpert.

• Remote-I/O or multiplexer: the HART signals can be accessed via a fieldbus system, e.g. PROFIBUS DP. Asset management is performed centrally, e.g. with FieldCare.

•HART compatible control system: a HART I/O card integrates the HART signals into the system (PLC/DCS). Asset management is performed by system tools.

• Remote access via Fieldgate SFG500 (PROFIBUS): a multiplexer or remote I/O allows parameterization, monitoring and diagnosis.
