byrrch 18, 1970-

Three of our best circulated publications have recently publicized the newlyformed i.iid-India mission.

Although this new missionhas higher objects, its immediate objective is to rescue members of the Disciplesof Christ in India fromjoining the United Church ofNorth India.

The Indian brother who ismainly responsible for the .formation of this mission isDr. Vijai Lall. He is sponsored by the Osage ChristianChurch in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is presently touring inthe United States,

From what I have been ableto learn, Dr. Vijai Lall isa man of integrity, courage, faith and good character. Heis in a better position towork with the dissident Disciples than anyone else inIndia,

There is, however, a -cred^in some of the

things which have been saidand in some of the thingswhich have been done, and alittle clarification wouldbe very good.

For more than twenty years

JlT-U-- has been very•faithfully serving the Lord

in mid-India, yet he has

been mostly ignored in thepresent matter. Just howmuch of this was intentionaland how much unintentional,I have no way of knowing;but if unity and brotherhoodare to prevail between thesebrethren in mid-India, thenthere ought to be more cooperation between the two.

Should ximerican Ghurohes\o7send money to afield where

no --imerican on the field tosupervise expenditure?

This points out a^hnnpi^p.nn^ntinn Which exists be-'tWeen'missionaries and nationals on many of the worldsmission fields, mine too, that the nationals, and notthe missionaries, shouldhave control of the cash. Itmay be that a man of Dr.Lall's caliber will succeedadmirably in managing thefunds, but there is evidencethat some of his associatesare more interested in thecash that is to be deliveredthan they are in the faithwhich was once and for alldelivered.

No one appreciates betterthan I the blessing of x.mer-ican dollars on the missionfield: yet money is also theroot of evil as much thereas anywhere else. We go tothe field as evangelists andend up being bookkeepers. Wego to wage war on the devil

mission ]there is to be '

and end up sq.uabbling witheach other over the budget.

Several of us were told

that Dr. Yijal Lall and hisgroup only desired our handin fellowship and that thereWould be no large fund raising. Did we misunderstand?

)—-^Another confusing factorinvolved is

Council of Disciples yj3^fChr is t, hereaf-:fe£bE=E2£^redto as ICCDC. This organization contains some unscript-ural and unscrupulous elements which Dr. Lall and theliid-India 'mission do not endorse. Yet it is difficultto see where one begins andthe other leaves off. It maybe that the line has not yetbeen drawn. There is a real

sense in which it can beZsaid that the IGGDG is Dr.1^1*s mission field.<^he ICGDC has begun a

^ • «3 +-1.11 n-if . Struggle v^ith the UGIuS over(/property. On the surface itvSould look as though we

ought to support them intheir efforts to keep thoseproperties from going intothe Union Church. Judgingthe matter from equity, however, it does seem that theUGK'iS has rights over theproperties since it was theywho financed them and notthe ICGDC. Sven on techni

calities, the UGtiS seems to^ be> winning over~"^tre'""TG'CD'G" in

the courts. This " church

fight is also giving themovement a bad name all overIndia, Unfortunately, someof the members of the ICGDCconsider the possession ofthe church building in 3il-aspur and other propertiesas a matter of life and

death, I am given to under-\\stand that Dr. Lall is back-y )ing ICGDC in this matter.

The news items and statis

tics which have been published indicate that Dr.Lall hopes to rescue the entire membership of the ICCDCfrom the UCliS Disciples andChurch Union, Let us hopefor the best, but consider-.ir^ the cpmplexiy^s,

The i-iid-lndia l.iss-ion cannot be held responsible for Dr, iviurch^s remarks, and yet he formed his conclusions from materials supplied by them. Also, membersof MBa saw nothing wrong inDr. luurch's remarks. Let mesay definitely that the Lordhas had faithful laborers inCentral and Horth India |since before Dr. Lall wasborn. Details of ray return tripIndia will be appearing in Chris-tasian Magazine: the first installment is already on boardship on its way to you. Sufficeit to say here that I arrivedsafely in Kanpur on Sept. 2nd after a quick trip. I did not makeany stopovers enroute except tochange planes.

The days since then have beenhectic as I have tackled last

year's backlog as well as presentresponsibilities. For a week Iwas laid up with the flu. Fortwo weeks I was the guest of theBernel Getters in Madhya Pradeshwhere I preached eight sermons intwo conventions.

I was successful in sheddinghalf of the work of the BibleSociety Kanpur Branch. Insteadof being fully secretary, I amnow only Corresponding Sec'y.Since the departure of theRempels in March, 19^9j the workof the branch has been going downhill.

lave made some improvementsin our Boys' dormitory includingan extra bathroom. At the moment, however, only one boy, Yohan, isin residence. Good news has Justcome that three of our former

residents have now found goodJobs.

As the date for Miss Dolly Chit-wood's furlou^ neared, I spentmore than three days at the Income Tax Office to clear her dues

before she left the country. Dealings with the I.T.O. have alwaysbeen frustrating.

Two pairs of tourists broughtus a breath of fresh air: Chaplain and Mrs. G.C. Fisher whom I

have known for 30 years, and myNebraskan friends, Virgil and La-verne Marshall.

October's receipts were $1245which included $500 from the PateFund. This is particularly encouraging considering that allthe contributions sent in October

were sent in after my return toIndia. I must admit that I was notexpecting it because my faith wastoo small.

Evangelist Joe Garraan of Revival-Fires is at present touring India. We are expecting him to visit Kanpur on Dec. 28-30, Next summer weare expecting the Reggie ThomasTeam.

Church attendance always increases just before Christmas. The church in Swarupnagar has nowentered that period of annual enthusiasm.

After some trial

have managed to getClass organized fornoon at 4, The songin Hindi. Some Sundays the Attendance is good and sometimes itisn't. The time conflicts withthe afternoon services in thecity's three largest denominational churches. This diminishes

our prospects a little bit butotherwide it is a very convenienttime. We have begun our BibleStudy with the gospel of Matthew.

The slides which I showed lastyear are available with cassetterecording from Mr. Richard Cajneron,2688 Vanderhoof Rd., Barberton,Ohio - 44203. He also has the projector and is available for speaking engagements.

One of the orphan boys whomwe helped raise, came severaldays ago asking me to help himget a driving license. It was afrustrating conversation becausehe had no clear idea of justwhat help he thought we couldgive him.

This is a complaint which someof our friends have had with us.

They have wanted us to be moreexplicit about our needs. Our"we will appreciate all the helpyou can give us" has not beenvery challenging to them.

In order that our work can be

/"adequately supported, we willneed a monthly income that neverfalls below S600 in any month.Let it go over this but don'tlet it go under.

My remaining in India does notdepend on this. However, unlesssufficient funds are forthcoming,we will have to close down some

of the work we are doing here.If this happens, we will say itwas the Lord's will.

Most of you laiow that our expenses increased when Mr. and Mrs

TELL US ABOUT KANPUR - RALPH HARTER

Situated on the bank of the Ganges River in northern India is a large city calledKanpur, sometimes spelled Cawnpore. Itis not a tourist center and some touristmaps do not show it at all. For those whohappen to stumble on the place, Kanpur hasmany surprises.

For one thing, visitors, whether Indianor foreign, are never prepared for the sizeof the city or for the mass of people in thestreets. Kanpur is the seventh largest citym India and has a population of more than1 1/2 million people.

Kanpur has no skyscrapers but some ofits buildings are imposing: the ReserveBank with it's brass doors, the Medical College, the new post office, the Life InsuranceCorporation Building, the railway stationwith it's domes and turrets, and the six-storied office building of the Oriental Fireand General Insurance Company. The tallest and most dominant structure in the city, rivalling in beauty the Taj Mahal itself, isthe new and modern Radha Krishna Temple.

The people of India are movie-mad, andthere are many palatial theaters in the cityto keep them entertained. On the other hand,Kanpur is not a cultural center and there arefew concerts, plays or art exhibits. Thereare thousands of restaurants ranging fromgood to very bad, but decent hotel rooms arein very short supply. An Ol3anpic-sizedswimming pool is available to all but thesports of cricket, soccer, hockey, tennis, badminton and kite-fljdng are more popular.

Our house is located in one of the bettersections of the city named Swarupnagar (Swa-roop-nugger). By the time you cross the cityand reach Swarupnagar, you will be very depressed at the filth of the city and the povertyof the people; although here and there youreye will be refreshed by beautiful Indian ladies gracefully wearing their beautiful saris.Through it all, you will wonder how the masses of people get enough to eat. You will ponder whether or not it would be possible toreach them all with the Gospel of Christ.

The Gospel of Christ is being preachedin different places in Kanpur. Bibles, NewTestaments and smaller portions of Scriptureare sold in large quantities, and some aredistributed free. The Bible Society has anactive branch in the city. Bible correspondence courses are easily available and are verypopular. Yet only one out of every 300 personsin the city claims to be a Christian of any kind.

There is only one congregauon of theRestoration Movement in Kanpur. This wasestablished by us in 1953. The congregationdoes not own a church building, but it holdsits Sunday morning services in a hall whichit rents for two hours a week. I am active

in the work of the local church, but the churchis independent of the mission and autonomous.

The mission work is centered at the Ekk-

lesia Press, 7/131, Swarupnagar, two milesfrom downtown. This was formerly the residence of Frank and Marie Rempel who livedhere for ten years before returning to Canadain 1969.

Ekklesia Press is involved in four main

activities: printing, publishing, Bible andbook sales, and a free lending library. Twomen are employed full time (often over time)in the one-room printing shop. The printingmachine itself is a small one brought to Indiamore than 40 years ago by Sterling Rothermel.Frank Rempel resurrected it from oblivion, fixed a motor to it, and set it going again formany more years of Christian service. Alltype is hand set.

Two periodicals are published at EkklesiaPress: Christasian in English and Jeevan-Deep in Hindi. The former is available toAmerican readers at the rate of $2 for threeyears. Mr. Lawrence Lazarus is the publisher of the Hindi paper and he is usually to befoimd at his desk working on some article ortranslation.

The bookstore was begun by LaVon Harterin 1954. Several years later, due to persistent public demand, the library section wasopened. The library has since proven to beour most effective evangelistic tool. At different times of day, different persons workin the book store and library, easily handlingboth departments at the same time.

At our place we also have a small dormitory for teen-aged boys. Many of these boysare orphans from the Kulpahar Kid's Home.Others come from Ragaul where Mrs. Rothermel labored for 50 years. These boyscome to the city seeking jobs or to take someoccupational training. During the months thatthey stay here, we put forth every effort toestablish them more firmly in the church.

The church in Kanpur is very fortunate tohave the help of Mr. Victor Walter. Mr. Walter is employed by Mr. T. G. Rash and is in

(continued on next page)

charge of the India Bible Institute whichmajors in Bible correspondence courses. In addition to this, Mr. Walter serveswithout pay as one of the pastors of theSwarupnagar Church of Christ. Mr. andMrs. T. G. Rash lived and worked in Kan-pur for several years and their influenceis still being felt.

At Ekklesia Press there remain tworooms for my living quarters and two guestrooms. Any of you are welcome to visitus at any time. We cannot offer your luxurious accomodations, but we can saveyour money and show you what India is allabout. Kanpur is easily reached by air ortrain.

At present (Dec. 1970) I am 46 yearsof age. I first left the USA in 1946 aftergraduating from the Cincinnati Bible Seminary. On the way to India, I stopped off atLondon, England where I studied for ninemonths at the Missionary School of Medicine. I was married in India in 1949 to La-Von Eagley. Mrs. Harter has been livingin the U.S. since 1955.

I am the missionary of the First Churchof Christ, Clinton, Ohio. The bank accountsare in the name of the church and the eldersof the church are the overseers of the mission work. What movable properly we ownis the property of the Clinton church. Wedo not own any immovable property in Kanpur. Ekklesia Press is operating in rentedquarters at the very reasonable rent of $52a month.

There have been many indications duringthe past 23 years that the missionary era inIndia is coming to an end. We do not knowhow much longer God intends for us to workin India, but it is our firm conviction that allof our missionaries remaining in India shouldbe upheld by fervent prayers and adequatefinances.
