J Term Will Change Your LifeAt Hartwick, we know how valuable study abroad is, because weve seen it in action.Ive been leading J Term experiences to South Africa since 1997, and Ive seen rst-hand how those trips have affected my students.
Being abroad helps you to appreciate your own circumstances; to be grateful andhumble; to cherish your own family and communicate with them more. It helps youto think about what matters most to you, what you want, to choose a career andactually achieve it.
You will develop social skills with other group members and with the people of theother culture; you will be able to interact successfully with members of other cultures.Youll develop condence in yourself, courage, and pride because youve discoveredthat even though something always goes wrong, you can make it right.
Youll understand that you have the ability toendure, to persevere, and succeed in difcultcircumstances. Study abroad will inspire you tolearn more and more on your own throughoutyour life, and it will help you put meaning intoyour life.
During J Term, youll have the time of your life, and youll change your life. Once you go, youllnever be the same.

Ricky Scarabino 12 | History
My J Term experience was absolutely amazing. I traveled to South Africa, and weexplored the country in so many ways. I got to pet a cheetah, talk to dozens of citizens, bewithin 20 feet of elephants and lions, and even had a wildebeest tibia thrown at me by ababoon. I still have that tibia today. The natural landscape of South Africa is something
to which I will always yearn to return.

The Hawaiian Islands were constructed in thesame way that I had witnessed with my own eyes,ow by ow, layer by layer. This lls my dailythoughts with ideas of just how much time ittakes to construct a world so beautiful. I can saywith condence that as a result of HartwicksJ Term, I now live my life with a renewed view onjust how vast the age of the Earth is; I no longerbusy myself with the trivial worries of the smallerproblems in life.
Life-changingAfter J Term, youll never be the same
Hartwick students and alumni say their J Term experience changed their lives
forever. It gave them a new perspective on the world, or helped them discover theirown passion, career, and drive. Spending a month outside your comfort zone willdo that. It will challenge you in new ways every day, and change you in ways younever expected.
Off-campus J Term programs are demandingmentally, emotionally, and, often, physically. Yourfaculty leaders, the students going with you, and past participants will work together to get ready.Prep meetings start in the fall. Some courses likeArizona: Sustainability and Uneven Developmenthave an on-campus study component before travel; otherslike Contemporary Chinainclude
language, culture, and arts coursework in the host country.
J Term will ask a lot of you, so be ready. And be open. Ask any Hartwick student or alumnusjustone J Term experience and youll never be the same.
While youre at it, ask them what to pack. Absolutely everyone will tell you one thing: dont forgetyour camera.

Peru was the experience of a lifetime. I really learned a lot there. My oral
communication in Spanish improved and I learned a lot of new vocabulary - but thebest lessons were about life. I saw many things in Peru. We saw injustice and poverty. We saw people who were incredibly strong. We saw love. It is impossible for me toexpress everything that I learned in Peru. It is an adventure that I will never forget; myexperiences will be with me always.
ExperientialJ Term is about getting your hands dirty
During J Term you might gain clinical nursing experience in Jamaica and meet
the challenge of providing culturally competent health care to individuals andfamilies. Maybe youll begin to effect change when you work with NGOs(non-governmental organizations) in Ghana. Study in Madagascar, the only placewhere lemurs can be found, and home to two thirds of the worlds chameleonspecies, and six of eight baobab tree species.
Participate in religious rituals with the Qero people of Peru, the last remaining Inca community, and climb mountains to reach some of the worlds most important archaeological sites. Gain a new
perspective on island biogeography in San Salvador when you snorkel to coral reefs, sea grass, andmangrove lagoon habitats.

ValuableJ Term is much more than a trip
Yes, youll go places you never thought you would, and youll see things you never
thought youd see. But dont expect a month-long sightseeing tour. In many cases,J Term is about learning rst-hand of the struggles faced by our global neighbors, and working to help them improve their lives.
Whether its nursing in Jamaica, health advocacy in Thailand, or economic justice in Mexico,J Term often means gaining a real understanding of how other people live, and what it takes to tryto x the system.
Once youre exposed to these cultures and issues, youll never be the same. Once you get a global
perspective, it will inform your outlook for the rest of your life. At the same time, youll beshowing future employers and grad schools that youve got a lot to offer. In todayscompetitive marketplace, experience is currency, and J Term is a pot of gold.
Off campus, international, on campusevery J Term experience is an academic course, withgrading criteria, and academic credit. It becomes part of your transcript, your resume, yourcredentials. The outcomes are both quantiable and immeasurable.

We skipped the tourist attractions of Mexico.Professor Kate ODonnell got us right into thevillages in Chiapas. She does economic solidaritywork there, so she has connections with JolomMayaetik, a womens fair trade initiative. We
were able to work directly with the Mayan textileweavers. Because they speak the indigenousTzeltal and not Spanish, everything had to becommunicated through two translators. I learnedto distill my thoughts.

J Term changed my direction. It showed me that I wanted to do physical therapy. Being
with the people, helping them, let me see the difference I could make in someoneslife. I worked with a visiting nurse practitioner. She helped me understanding that theAkah of Thailand do not rest, they always go back to the elds; I helped her do healthpresentations. We demonstrated, in a culturally sensitive way, simple ways to preventinjury. I was inspired.
DeepOne month, one topic, serious learning
During J Term, Hartwick faculty and students dig deeper. When youre engaged
with a topic on a daily basis, you get focused and you get deep. You really knowwhat youre taking about, because youre spending all your energy on one intensemonth. Its really serious learning.
J Term is intense. The month of January is spent on one course and one course only. On-campusclasses meet every weekday, taking full advantage of the extended time together for in-depthstudy, discussions, practice, and projects. Off-campus programs typically begin at Hartwick withacademic and cultural preparation before the on-site experience begins.
When youre able to really dive in, you never know what the results will be. Youll probably learnmore than you thought you couldabout your course of study and about yourself.

I taught at Springbrook during J Term as an educational mini-practicum. It was a
requirement, which turned into much more. My students were unique in so many waysand have a way of igniting a spark of passion within me that is unmatched by any othervolunteering or work I have done. Because of my experiences, I decided to pursue acertication in special education at Hartwick, as well as a second masters degree inspecial education after graduation.
EssentialThe best thing youve ever had to do
J Term is a requirement at Hartwick (every student must complete two J Terms
during their four years), and thats because we take it seriously. Experientiallearninggetting in the eld or the lab and getting your hands dirtyis a crucialpart of what we do. Thats because we know its the best way to learn.
When you combine in-depth study with global experience, something incredible happens. Thatswhy Hartwick alumni always list J Term as one of the most important parts of their academiccareer. Thats why they use words like life-changing to describe J Term. Thats why it matters.

It doesnt seem that three and one-half weeks can change ones life, but I have seen
it happen so many times. I rmly believe this chance to study in an area accompaniedby the expertise of a professor well known to the students is an opportunity not to bemissed.

AppliedLearning means more when youre doing
Dont get us wrongtextbooks and classrooms are important. Theories are
critical and sometimes scholarly work is spent with your nose in a book. Butgetting out of the academic halls and into the world is what were all about.
If youre a biology major, it might mean studying tropical biodiversity and conservation by living ateld stations in the rainforests, cloud forests, and dry forests. Theres no better way to get to knowbiodiversity than to put yourself in the middle of it.
If youre a theatre arts major, it means seeing shows in London or on Broadway. It means meetingthe people who make them happen. It means thinking and talking deeply about what youve seen,
how it was done, and why its important.

We took what we had been learning in class and applied it to what we were doing andseeing. We werent just discussing a school play, we were critiquing Broadway.

PhenomenalExperience something incredible
Theres nothing like J Termin-depth, in-the-eld, in-country study with a small
group (usually around 15 people) of diverse students. Almost all J Term programsare open to majors and non-majors alike, so youll get a mix of interests and talentno matter where you go.
Nearly every off-campus program is open to new students; a few are First Year Seminars just forfreshmen. Somelike Geology and Natural History of Hawaiihave a course prerequisite offered inthe fall.

Living in the middle of the rainforest. Surrounded by the sights, sounds, and aromas of
this magnicent land. You couldnt experience that in a classroom. It was phenomenal.Living so simply, drinking in the world around me, allowed me the opportunity toget to know me. I learned who I had become. And in doing so I learned that I wantedsomething for my life other than being a researcher. And that is okay. I continue topursue adventure every day.

GroundbreakingDo real work in real places
At Hartwick, we place great emphasis on undergraduate students doing real-
world research. At most schools, these are the kind of experiences that arentavailable until youre a graduate student. J Term programs often mean workingclosely with your professor in an exotic locale, turning up real data, solving realproblems, and making real change.
Catherine Winters 14 | Environmental Chemistry
For myFood and Social Justiceclass last J-term, we had the opportunity to give back tothe community by volunteering at a local food pantry. The material we covered in class
and my experiences at the food pantry opened my mind further to the importance ofthe issue of food justice. Seeing rst-hand how poverty can impact a persons healthby preventing them from being able to afford healthy food was really eye opening andstrengthened my interest in urban agriculture, which brings access to local and healthyfood to food deserts.

My J Term journeyworking an archaeological dig at Pigeon Creek on San SalvadorIsland in the Bahamasrepresented not only my rst trip outside the US, but in fact myrst trip on an airplane. The experience fueled a lifelong passion for exploring the world.
During our dig, we uncovered many artifacts of the Arawak Indians. The mostsignicant was a ceremonial jade hammer from Mexico. This was an important ndbecause it helped prove the existence of previously unknown trade routes across CentralAmerica that included these tiny islands. I reect on that hammer and its discovery oftenwhen I consider the challenges of global businessopening new markets, developingnew ideas to expand our company, and nding new ways to operate when there is no
proven path.
What J Term taught meand what that hammer symbolizesis the value ofexploration, of expanding your horizons, of being actively curious about the worldaround you. The journey I began with J Term is still taking me to new places today.
