From the Rabbi’s Desk

Rabbi Cutler

Shalom

Now that the High Holidays are over we should focus on what is the mission of Beth Israel. I would like

to look at one aspect on how we define who we are. As I mentioned in my sermons on Yom Kippur, formal Jew-

ish education and the preparation for bar or bat mitzvah ceremony has little to no value for many young people.

The consequence is that we are losing a generation of young people who have limited or no concern about the

future of the Jewish people. The Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony is anachronistic as symbol of a "rite of passage"

into adulthood. Unless we postpone Bar and Bat Mitzvah well into our 30's, when some of us finally leave ado-

lescence and approach adulthood, we will not quite get the "rite of passage" right. There is no relationship be-

tween receiving a Jewish education and real life.

The Bar or Bat Mitzvah who literally run off the bima with a sigh of relief, gifts in hand has become a

symbol, not of the taking on of responsibility, but of the retreat from responsibility. It is, for many, a huge, neon

exit sign from being a Jew. Therefore, Jewish education failed to transform them into moral human beings, to be

God-like, to see the necessity of having a Judaism in the future.

We as American Jews live in a world of competing values. The ultimate value that we hold dear is what

can I gain, bat mitzvah gifts, etc. These values are the antithesis of the one Jewish value -- holiness. The message

of Kadosh is lost, to a whole generation - if not several generations.

How can Jewish education compete in a sophisticated technological world? How can our children

discern information when there is so much and it is immediate? Technology is amoral and the message of

Kadosh is lost in SMS, short messaging service, or text messaging via mobile phones. How do we guide our

students in a new world where technology is about functionality, humans serve technology, and the ideals of

Kadosh are lost? Technological values are the antithesis of the Jewish value that human beings are created in the

image of God.

Jewish education is not an extracurricular activity. Jewish educators spend too much time trying to

devise the right formula for teaching students what they need to know about Judaism. We make sure they know

about the holidays, the basic Bible stories, rituals, prayers and Israel and of course, we make sure they are

prepared to Torah and Haftarah for their bar or bat mitzvah.

But through this the message is lost. Teaching them facts and even Hebrew is a means, not an end, and

hence secondary. Jewish education needs to be reconstructed with only one primary goal: to form our children

into moral human beings, to teach them to how to be Jews. Morality formation, teaching our children how to

act holy, needs to be the center of all Jewish education.

The first task is to infuse them with a sense that God is the source of morality, and that good and evil are not

about personal taste. The average Bar or Bat Mitzvah is devoid of God and sanctity.

(continued on next page)

Page 3: HaRuach€¦ ·  · 2017-10-03Contact Barbara Hendel at 610-321-2559 or barbarahendel@yahoo.com. 2 ... Arlana (cantor), arol (violin and piano), Roberta (flute), James (piano), and

3

The average Jewish education may be Hebrew-centered or even observance-centered, but it rarely is God-

centered. Many Jewish parents are unable to say to their child, “God loves you” or “Look at that gorgeous sunset,

isn’t God amazing?”

The second task is to instill children with a sense of worthiness and acceptance, to make them feel positive

about themselves. We must create a religious school that is a haven that no child would ever be ridiculed by other

children or adults and all children and adults will show mutual respect. Religious school must have a zero-tolerance

policy for not allowing slurs, derogatory remarks, bullying, etc. We will act God-like with each other. We need to

act in compassionate and caring ways. Religious school must be a holy place.

Finally, the marked success of a Jewish religious school is to impart the children with a love for Judaism and

that can only be accomplished if they love themselves and this happens only in a safe and loving place and God is

the center. Our children will want to learn more about the facts of Judaism if they love God and themselves.

And none of this can be accomplished without parental and adult involvement. Religious school is not

public school where you drop your child off and they return home knowing things. Religious school is about

morality-formation not retaining facts. Parents must be involved at home as well as at the synagogue.

Because, one of the greatest challenges that our children will face when they are a true bar or bat mitzvah,

an adult on their own, is how they will make moral decisions in a world with an overabundance of information and

competing value systems. How will they know to make the ‘right’ decision?

We all have a stake (those of us that have children and those of us without children) in religious school. We

all have a stake in nourishing our students spiritually, intellectually and emotionally.

When our children are faced with making moral choices, there will be no alternative moral system for

them. They will only know how to act Kadosh, holy, God-like. Then their Hebrew school WILL have had something

to do with real life.

SISTERHOOD SNIPPETS

I woke up this morning feeling a little bit overwhelmed: student registration tonight, lesson plans for Sunday, in-tensive preparation for an awesome concert at the synagogue, and an infinitesimal number of other everyday things. And, no, I cannot say "no" because I see it as my job to sustain Judaism through my teaching and syna-gogue activities. Besides, it is the September dilemma – the holidays just come at the wrong time so there are lots of conflicting obligations. Anyone else feel this way? I'll bet if I could hear your voices, I would hear a resounding "yes". So, what shall we do? We cannot let our enthusiasm fail in view of all the conflicting responsibilities. We can only know that, although we cannot complete the whole task, we also cannot desist from doing whatever we can. We, as members of Sisterhood, have a tremendously important job. All the things Sisterhood does to support the syn-agogue were featured in the September issue of HaRuach. We must realize that what you do sustains Sisterhood; the efforts of Sisterhood sustain the synagogue and the synagogue exists to assure the continuation of Judaism. You cannot always say "yes" to requests for help, but you can say "yes" at least some of the time, because all the "yeses" together form a bridge from not being able to meet our synagogue's goals to meeting them par excel-lence. Share your ideas, share your time; give in whatever way you can so that Sisterhood can move forward. We look forward to a year of enthusiastic contributions from each of you as Sisterhood continues to carry out its important legacy. Sisterhood Calendar of Events

Religious School Chai-lights Joan Sharp

Religious School Chai-lights

Our opening Sunday of Religious School on September 10th was a very special day. In addition to our welcome back

breakfast, our Religious School families participated in a special program to hang mezuzot that the students painted

last spring.

Before the mezuzot could be hung, the students who attend on Wednesdays learned about the klaf (kosher scroll)

that is inserted in the mezuzah case, and that the letter “shin” stands for the word “Shaddai,” which means God. That

is why you will often find a Shin on a mezuzah case.

A kosher klaf is hand-written in calligraphy by a scribe (sofer) on a small piece of parchment made from a kosher ani-

mal. It contains the Shema and the V’Ahavta, which remind us that there is only one God, and that we should love

God with all our heart, soul, and might, teach these words to our children, say them when we lie down at night and

when we rise, wear them as a sign on our arms and between our eyes (tefillin), and inscribe them on the doorposts

of our house and upon our gates (the mezuzah). There is also an additional portion from Deuteronomy on it.

A mezuzah klaf has 713 letters. If even one of these letters is missing or shaped incorrectly, the Mezuzah is invalid

and cannot be used.

Each student rolled up a klaf the correct way (with the letter “shin” on the back of the klaf facing the front of the

case) and put them into each of the mezuzot in addition to adding a backing to each case.

On that first Sunday, families were divided into 3 groups, parents and children together, to hang up the mezuzot.

Each group learned and recited the correct blessing for putting up a mezuzah, and the correct placement (3/4 of the

way up the right side, with the top leaning in as you would enter through the door). No mezuzot are placed on closet

doors or bathrooms, and the Sanctuary also does not need a mezuzah because the Torah is already in there.

Rabbi Cutler also brought in some of his own mezuzot to hang up, and we are so pleased that two mezuzot belonging

to Cissy Halpern were also hung up, appropriately on the Gift Shop door (since Cissy ran the Gift Shop for many

years), and on the Halpern Social Hall.

So next time you are in the synagogue, please look around at all the mezuzot that are on the doors in the building.

We had a wonderful community experience, in addition to fulfilling a mitzvah (commandment)!

We would like to thank the following families who generously donated money to pay for the klafim: Harrison, Keller,

Kuhn/Zeichner, McPhillimey, Parker, Schifter/Lam, Schonherz, Simon, Solomon, Steen, and Stern families. By making

their donations to the Cohen Enrichment Fund, all donations could be matched, in order to pay for the total cost of

the klafim.

Here are a few pictures captured of our mezuzah hanging that morning…

Preschool & Kindergarten News

Adrianne Liebman

There is so much going on at school during the coming month. We have settled in to our classrooms and

routine and are ready to add some special things in to the mix of our experiences here at Beth Israel.

We will begin our very special “child-friendly” Shabbat celebrations this week. For those who don’t

know our routine, here is how we celebrate each week. The purpose is to make the time of Shabbat as a

very special time during our week as well as introducing some of the customs.

Each Friday, one child from each class is honored as the “Shabbat child” and they wear their own Shab-

bat Crown. We begin with Bim, Bam, Shabbat Shalom. We then turn and shake hands with our neigh-

bors wishing each other Shabbat Shalom. The Shabbat children are called up to the bimah to help us

lead, It’s Shabbat and I feel good !( Andi Joseph), followed by a round of Shimon Omer (Simon Says) in

Hebrew. We end with Hinei Matov U’manayim , which the kindergarten class comes up to lead. Do you

know that these words translated into English mean the following:

Happy are we to be friends when we live in peace together. Let’s all live in peace and learn to be friends

together.

We then return to the classrooms and recite the blessings over the candles, juice and challah in Hebrew

and English. We ask questions, some classrooms talk about what they are thankful for; and other class-

rooms share a mitzvah note- where the parent shares something that the child did that week to make

the world a better place. The parent/s of the Shabbat child also read a story to the class. It is really a

lovely experienec and a highlight of the week.

I am sure we will learn how to shake the lulav and have our snack in the Sukkah! We will certainly pa-

rade around the building with flags on Simchat Torah as well as get a close up look at the Torah! We

may even make very special classroom Torah’s out of paper towel rolls, paper and paper bag covers, and

of course tin foil for the crowns. We will also make edible torahs out of pretzel sticks, fruit roll ups and

pull and peel licorice strings!

The fantastic fives and kindergarten will be taking a trip to Highland Orchards to pick apples and pump-

kins.

The PTO will be meeting to work on raffle baskets for our Family Fun Night which will be a Troll Dance

Party on November 4th.

We will also hold our third literacy night. This is a fun family night where each of the classrooms have a

different story read along with very special activities related to the story . We have a fabulous turn out

for this event, and the teachers do a magnificent job coming up with really fabulous activities.

This is just a glimpse of some special things happening in October. Of course the days are filled with an

amazing array of activities that the teachers have planned.

BIC5 Justice, Justice You Shall Pursue

Once I was asked to choose a word or two or a verse to be written in a new scroll by a scribe with me as sponsor. At the time, I chose the words "Choose life". Now my decision would be different and I would choose the words "Justice, justice you will pursue, which we recently read in the portion Shoftim in Deuteronomy. I would choose this phrase because choosing justice, in a broad sense, means choosing life, and, as such, it may be considered the most important precept of Torah. Scholars question why the word "Justice" (tzedek) is repeated, and one explanation is justice must be pursued in just ways. I interpret this to mean bringing about equality by being fair, rather than by acts of rage or retaliation; by re-specting others, rather than exploiting them; by acting out of compassion and by communicating our values through kind and caring behavior. In view of the current hate crimes and demonstrations and the general challenging situations in the world, we need to be aware of how we pursue justice. BIC5 has several efforts underway to do just this. We continue to provide food, toiletries and paper goods to the needy. We are making progress with our plans to work with the interfaith community to assist local refugees, and we are organizing an opportunity for our congregants to participate in teach-ing English to refugees and immigrants. In addition, we have been helping each other within the synagogue commu-nity, and providing assistance to our adopted families and others in need. And, indeed many of you contribute gen-erously to causes or charities of your choice. In doing all this, we recognize that it is not fair for people to be under-nourished or have insufficient shelter or not be able to afford medication or health care. it is not fair for individuals to have to cope with life alone; especially the very young and elderly. Every time we pursue justice by helping oth-ers, we are contributing to creating a better world. Soon you will see a sign-up list for volunteers to assist in tutoring individuals or working with small groups to help them learn English and adapt to American culture. You can volunteer to help with a 3-hour session just once a year or you can share the responsibility with others on a rotational basis. For those who enjoy volunteering in literacy programs, there will be the opportunity to receive training, followed by teaching an individual immigrant for 3 hours a week. You will be hearing more about this opportunity to bring justice to the world. BIC5
