•Harvard is the oldest institution of education in the United States. It was established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.•Harvard University came to its name because of it’s first benefactor, the young minister John Harvard of Charlestown. When he died (1838) he left his library and half of his estate to the institution established in 1636 by vote.
