Harvest Festival Leafield CE Primary SchoolSeptember 2014

Our Harvest Festival takes place in our local church. It is a time when we celebrate the food we have and share it with others.

Every child in school brings some food which is taken to the church and shared with people in the community.

To celebrate this special time of year, the children sing songs, recite prayers and readings and create artwork. Parents and members of the community come to share the celebration with us.

Class 4 found out that that the word harvest comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word haerfest which meant Autumn. The children learnt how to make a traditional harvest sheaf out of bread dough.

Making the breadHere are the finished breads before they have been baked.

Here are the baked breads.

Class 3 made posters with words related to Harvest.

Class 1 and 2 sang a song called Conkers and made conker headbands.

They also recited poetry.

Class 3 & 4 sang Everybody wants to rule the world by Tears for Fears.

The poem Diary of a Church Mouse by Sir John Betjeman depicts harvest time:
