Introduction

As leaders in the field of sterilization, our goal isto engineer and manufacture safe, efficient, quality sterilization products. We are certain youwill agree that this sterilizer meets our goal.

Regardless of how well a piece of equipment isdesigned, misuse, abuse, or neglect will deny itsowner the safe, efficient, quality serviceexpected. Often, misuse, abuse or neglect occursunintentionally because the operator is unawareof the proper operating and maintenanceprocedures. This manual provides you with theinformation required to properly operate androutinely maintain your sterilizer. The informationincluded in this manual applies to all modelsunless noted for specific models.

We urge you to read this manual carefully beforeoperating the unit, and retain it for futurereference.

Operation Overview

Hydroclave MC8 and MC10Steam SterilizerThe MC8 and MC10 sterilizer operates on theprinciple of heated water converted to steam in asealed pressure chamber.

What happens when the controls are turnedon?

• The chamber vent valve opens and theheater turns on to warm up the chamber. The items to be sterilized are placed on

Page 5: Harvey - American Instrument · Harvey Hydroclave MC8 Cycle Phase Indicators Cycle Select Switches. 13 GENERAL DESCRIPTION Figure 3 Optional Accessories Figure 2 Standard Accessories

5

the trays and the trays are placedinside the sterilizer chamber. (Certainparameters such as positioning andsize of the load must be observed forproper operation and satisfactoryresult.) Then, the door is closed andlatched, and the “START” buttonpressed to start the cycle.

What happens when the cycle starts?

• The water fill valve opens and theproper amount of water automaticallyflows from the reservoir into thechamber.

• The water in the chamber begins toheat. As the water turns to steam, thetemperature and pressure increase, forcing air from the chamber.

• When the temperature in the chamberreaches the proper temperature (121or 135°C) the exposure timer begins.During this exposure time, thetemperature in the chamber isautomatically maintained at either 121or 135°C, plus or minus about twodegrees.

• At the completion of the exposure timea solenoid valve opens, allowing thesteam and water to vent back into thereservoir. The steam reenters the

6

reservoir through tubing below the waterlevel in the reservoir. The water in thereservoir condenses the steam to aliquid for reuse in the next cycle.

When the one minute timed vent iscomplete an indicator light on the controlpanel lights to alert the operator that thecycle is complete.

Drying cycleAt the completion of the sterilization cycle, thedrying cycle automatically begins. This cyclecontinues until the selected time has elapsed orthe door is opened.

To restart a drying cycle that has been terminatedby opening the door; close the door (DO NOTLATCH) and press the “START” button.

Operator MaintenanceIt is important to establish the maintenanceschedule called for in the Operator Maintenancesection of this manual.

DailyBefore each days use: Check the water level inthe reservoir. Refill with distilled or deionizedwater if needed. Clean the door gasket and itsmating surface.

WeeklyClean the chamber, rack and trays once a weekto prevent a buildup of mineral deposits insidethe chamber. Normal tap water containschemicals and minerals, chlorine being themost common. Chlorine is especially corrosiveto the stainless steel chamber, trays and rackwhen water is turned to steam during thesterilization process. It is important to removeany mineral deposits regularly to ensure peakoperating efficiency.

Distilled or deionized water should always beused in the MC8 and MC10 steam sterilizer.Even when distilled or deionized water is used, some contaminants can collect in the chamber, rack and trays.

Clean the reservoir, reservoir filter and chamberscreen at least every 25 cycles. A clogged filterand/or screen will result in restricted water flowand prolong the time it takes to fill the chamber.

Maintaining a clean reservoir, filter andchamber screen is especially important. Foreignparticles, such as bits of oil, adhesives, amalgam, etc., can be picked up from itemsbeing sterilized and returned to the reservoir, clogging the filter and screen.

The daily and weekly maintenance should beperformed as outlined above to ensure long,trouble-free service. Failure to routinely performmaintenance procedures could result inprocessing delays or equipment down time andpossible equipment repairs.

Detailed maintenance procedures for thoselisted above and also other “as required” itemsare shown in the Operator Maintenancesection of this manual.

PrinterThe MC8 printer is a separate unit connected tothe sterilizer by a plug-in cable. The optionalMC10 printer is an integral part of the ControlPanel.

Non-RecirculatingWater AccessoryStandard MC8 and MC10 sterilizers dischargesteam back into the reservoir. For sterilizers withthe non-recirculating system, the distilled water isused to make steam in the chamber for one cycleonly. Used water (steam) is exhausted into thecooling tank which then overflows into thecollection bottle. The collection bottle is thenemptied when full.

An optional overflow tube is provided forconnection to the back of the cooling tank. Thisfeature allows the excess water to drain directlyinto a sink or drain (if available), eliminating theneed to periodically empty the collection bottle.

Recommended SteamSterilization Monitoring ProgramAll functions of the sterilizer should be monitoredto provide maximum sterilization assurance.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation ofHospitals and the American Dental Associationrecommends that biological indicators be used atleast weekly to check the effectiveness of steam

sterilizers to sterilize; i.e., to kill test organismsof a known high resistance. (Bacillusstearothermophilus is the recommended testorganism for monitoring steam sterilization.)

We recommend the use of process indicatorssuch as the B T Check Indicator within eachpackage of each cycle. For additionalassurance that minimum sterilizing conditionshave been achieved, a biological indicator suchas B T Sure should be used at least once aweek.

Filling ReservoirAdd distilled or low quality deionized water (mini-mum 0.5 megohm/cm, maximum 1.5 megohm/cm) to the reservoir up to the fill line. The MC8reservoir holds approximately 3 liters; the MC10reservoir, 4 liters. Do not overfill.

OPERATION

CautionUse only distilled or lowquality deionized water(minimum 0.5 megohm/cm,maximum 1.5 megohm/cm).Normal tap water containsminerals that will corrodesterilizer parts.

NoteBe sure reservoir drain valve isclosed before filling the reservoir.

WarningBurn Hazard: Do not add waterto the reservoir while sterilizationcycle is in progress. Steamvented into reservoir at end ofcycle could result in possibleburns.

The water in the reservoir couldbe HOT if multiple cycles havebeen run in succession.

OPERATION

Preparing Items for Sterilization• Clean and dry items thoroughly before

placing in the sterilizer. Ultrasoniccleaning is recommended to removestubborn debris.

• After cleaning, rinse instrumentsthoroughly with deionized or distilledwater. Inspect instruments to ensure thatall debris has been removed.

• Small bits of wax, oil, amalgam, etc., oninstruments can be dislodged duringsterilization and circulated through thesterilizer piping. This could eventuallycause partial restriction of water flowand the need for possible service.

• Unwrapped goods can be placeddirectly on tray liner in the bottom of thetray. Do not use paper towels.

• Open all hinged instruments.

• Uncover empty containers and placethem on their sides.

• Device manufacturers (i.e., manufactur-ers of handpieces and specialty items)instructions must be followed for propercleaning and sterilization of thosedevices.

Loading1. Place items to be processed in

appropriate trays or holders and place inthe sterilization chamber.
