Responding to the need for permanent housing in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, this thesis explores the role of architecture in housing the homeless, specifically those suffering from drug addiction. This site is located in the Oppenheimer district where the decentralization of medical and social services creates an extensive support network for residents to utilize.

Extension of Semi-Private SpaceSite Division

This proposal contributes to the neighbourhood through a series of public and semi-public spaces, including a restaurant and resident training kitchen, as well as a roof garden and produce market. These spaces reinforce the connection between building residents and the community while providing areas for skills training and social interaction.

The second phase of this proposal responds to the site through an extension of semi-private space acting as a node of residential activity. The programme of this extension responds to the needs of both the residents and the community, including the proposal for an art gallery and daycare.

The primary residential entryway to the building is shared by patrons of the restaurant, creating a central gathering point on the ground floor. Slat partitions divide the public and semi-public areas while maintaining a visual connection between spaces.

This studio focused on the design of an NGO centre in the town of Leh, Ladakh, India. Our proposal introduced the preservation of Ladakhi building techniques through education and training. This led to the concept of an open floor plan that would facilitate a workshop on the ground floor with offices and a lounge on the upper floors. (This project was developed in collaboration with Ian Higenell)

Our material and precedent research led to the development of a central masonry wall, dividing the working areas and circulation corridors. In order to harness its thermal mass, we incorporated a radiant heating system into the wall’s cavity by capturing the heat loss of several chimney flues. The addition of niches in the wall also allow for seating and storage space.

The design for a school of experiential education began by determining the appropriate programmatic space for each discipline. These areas are divided from the circulation space by an atrium running longitudinally through the building. The classrooms and circulation are then connected to one another through a series of bridges that extend through the facade, creating nooks to display the students’ work.

The B1 pavilion assignment was to create a study hall on the median of University Avenue on Dalhousie’s main campus. Individual study carrels are found around the periphery with seating for groups in the centre and at either end. Two parabolic ridge boards create a skylight that runs the length of the building, connecting to the exterior walls through a series of timber rafters, mimicking the branches of a tree.
