year. The following students gained an Excellence or

Merit endorsement. (photo back page)

Year 11 Merit – Bethany Clark, Grace Doak, Miriam Lass-ing, Katie Rolls, Lukas van der Werff, Jack Sanko, Sienna

Stuijt, Max Saathof

Year 13 Excellence – Ezra Palmers

Year 13 Merit – Jacob Doak, Ryan Field, Sam Stanton

Welcome back to what I hope and pray will be another

full and rewarding year for your child here at Hastings Christian School. A special welcome to all our new fami-

lies. We look forward to getting to know you and pray that you and your children will enjoy the blessing of being

a part of the HCS school community.

We also welcome three new staff to our school this year.

Emma Nicoll joins the secondary school technology team and will support the work of Karen Major in the de-

livery of the food and fabric programme. We are also blessed to have two new teacher aides join us this year.

Marie Moore (mother of Teani in B2) will work two after-

noons a week with four of our primary school classes and will assist in teaching about the Maori culture and lan-

guage. Marie has a real passion for helping the students at our school appreciate the heritage, language and cul-

ture of the indigenous people of New Zealand.

Lois Morton (grandmother of Christopher Morton in B2)

returns to HCS as a teacher aide after many years living in Australia with her husband Brian. Lois was our learning

support teacher over ten years ago and brings a wealth of teaching experience from both her time in NZ as well as

teaching at a large Christian School in Australia. Lois will

primarily work with our year 5-8 classes in E block.

Another staffing change this year involves our current teacher aides who will all be swapping levels. Carolyn

Sanko will return to working in the junior and middle

school while Willie Koster and Annemiek Meinsma will move to the E block to support the teachers and students

there.

Sadly the holiday period did not see the normal flurry of

building activity here at school that we had hoped. The proprietor of our school had planned to have a new pur-

pose built prefab for the delivery of the fabric pro-gramme ready for the start of the school year. However

due to a hold up with the building consent process our

building will not be completed till at least the end of term one. While we have been able to make internal arrange-

ments for this term we would still ask that you join us in praying for this situation.

2016 looks set to be an exciting event filled year. Already

our year 13 students have been on camp, which from

all accounts sounds to have been one of the most suc-cessful to date.

A few other notable events taking place this term include

a year 8 camp at the Guthrie-Smith Outdoor Pursuit

Centre for a three-day camp (they left today), an Art Deco mufti day, a Home and School picnic dinner

event, an athletics House team competition and an exciting opportunity to have in our school for three days,

Richard Edlin, a man that is at the forefront of Christian Education. More information about all these and other

events can be found in upcoming newsletters.

Our prayer as a teaching staff is that your child will not

only grow in knowledge and character this year as we partner together with you in their education, but that they

will develop into young men and women who think bibli-

cally, serve faithfully and live wholeheartedly for the Lord.

Scholarship Results Congratulations to Ezra Palmers who gained

Scholarship passes in three subjects: Maths with Statistics (outstanding pass), Maths

with Calculus and Physics. This is a

fantastic result and we wish Ezra all the best as he takes up further study at Waikato

University.

Blazers The current blazer material is now out of production. We will

need to source a new material soon but would like to keep

as many of the current blazers for use for the next few years as we transition to the new material. If you have a blazer at

home that is no longer required or you were saving for a younger sibling, could you please email or see Daphne so

she can possibly match you up with someone who needs a

blazer for this year.

Wanted Parents, if you have unwanted newspapers at home that you

would like to get rid of, we can use them in the multiroom.

Please drop them into the office or multiroom. Thanks.

Library Help Do you have a few hours spare (either Monday, Tuesday or

Friday morning) where you could help out in the library with displays and processing books? Please contact Faye if you

can help.

Calling Employers

STAR for senior students Year 12-13 2016 This year we plan to run a STAR programme for selected

year 12 & 13 students. Star is an acronym for Secondary

Tertiary Alignment Resource. The school is allocated a sum of government money to buy in distance learning

programmes and/or place students in work places or complete a course at the local polytech either in school time

or during holidays. With this in mind we would like to create a register of employers from the parent body who would be

willing to take HCS senior students on work experience

placements. Work placements could be as short as a one or two day ‘look and see’ visit, through to a more long term

arrangement eg. one afternoon a week over a school term. If you think you could help please contact the school office

or Mike Pudney.
