Memorial Day 2013 is this Monday and was originally observed as aday of “prayer for peace in our world.” It has traditionally been a cele-bration to honor those who have served their country in past wars,both those who survived and especially, those who gave their lives toprotect our freedoms. Sadly, again this year, we have hundreds ofthousands of American soldiers in harm’s way around the world andthey must also be in our thoughts and prayers as we pay tribute thisday. However you choose to observe this day, by attending a churchservice, visiting and/or decorating a soldier’s grave, thanking a veter-an you know personally (a simple handshake will do) you can be surethat your efforts are appreciated by those you honor & their families.A very meaningful way to celebrate and show your support for our vet-erans is to attend or participate in one of the parades or other obser-vances around our county this weekend. In Hastings, the annualHastings Memorial Day Parade kicks off at 9:30am this Monday andstops at the various monuments as it marches through DowntownHastings and presents a brief ceremony on Courthouse Square. Jointhe parade and show your patriotism. The parade is sponsored by theAmerican Legion Post 45 in Hastings. The Hastings Exchange Clubwill pass out American Flags along the way for you to wave as theparade passes by. This is a solemn event and no political entries areallowed, no sirens, horns, pamphlets, political advertising, candy orother celebratory activities are allowed. For more information aboutthe parade or to enter a unit, call 948-8218. Other Memorial DayParades include Middleville (11am), Nashville (11am), HickoryCorners (10am), Prairieville, Caledonia (noon), Woodland (10am) andWayland (11am).1. The annual “Breaking Barriers 5K Walk/Run” is next Saturday,June 1 in Hastings. The walk/run starts at The Hastings ManufacturingCompany (325 N. Hanover) and travels the trails in DowntownHastings beginning at 8:30am. The money raised supports the freeclinic that provides free medical & dental care to uninsured adults(18+) in our community each Tuesday & Thursday from 5-7pm at theiroffice at 1230 W. State Street. The annual Hastings High School Alumni Banquet is nextSaturday, June 1, in the Hastings High School Cafeteria. The feature presentation during the Movie Memories &Milestones showing this Thursday evening (5-8 pm) is “RearWindow” starring James Steward, Grace Kelly and Teresa Ritter. Alllibrary programs are free and open to all.5. The second Gus Macker Basketball Tournament is looking forvolunteers to help put on the event.
