Over the ages, the adage that “A picture is worth a thousand words”mistakenly set up a division between folks who prefer one over theother. For over 50 years, the Reminder has known that the two work
together, especially in the stories we tell as part of each week’s cover photo-graph. Go back to the original Chinese proverb from which the adageevolved, and one finds that the literal translation is actually, “A picture’smeaning can express ten thousand words.” That’s our intent when we offera photograph as an invitation to each week’s Reminder. We want to tug atyour heart, we want to preview a written story with each issue’s cover.Words and pictures can live in harmony because, together, they provide us ameans by which we bring you the best our county and surrounding areaoffers. This week, we review six of our best from the 52 chances we geteach year. We hope you enjoy our story . . . in words and in pictures.

The art of fishing is fishing instructor Ron Martin’s favorite sub-ject. He shares his passion with students in Hastings andLakewood schools each year by spending about eight hours in
the classroom teaching students the basics of the sport. Each May, thestudents take a field trip to local ponds to try their hand at the real thingand attempt to catch a fish or two, or three, then throw them back toswim for another day. Martin has been sharing his love of the outdoors— and his contagious enthusiasm for fishing — with students for thepast eight years. Pictured are Woodland students (from left) SophieDuits, Emilie Yonker, Jacy Hansen, Caleb Steed and Martin.

When they lay out the chess boards at the Hastings Public Library, JennaMiller, 8, is always ready to step into a royal world made up of kings andqueens and bishops. Her opponents need to be on guard because Jenna has
become one of a number of chess prodigies who are learning the game and perfect-ing their strategies thanks to the Hastings Chess Club which meets each Tuesday afterschool. The youngsters often stay on to test their mettle against adult players whocompete until 8 p.m. Here, Miller is playing against Leona Frost, 13, while, in thebackground, Rickie Bowerman, 9, is causing James Miller,11, to seriously considerhis next move. Chess is a game that, studies show, helps both children and adults, increasing mental ability for developing minds and fending off potential diseasessuch as Alzheimer’s in older players. Read about how one of the world’s oldestgames is helping to build a promising future in Barry County inside.

Baseball is more than a game for Middleville resident Tom Enslen(left) and his two sons Robby (center) and Tommy. They all say thegame has helped shape who they are on and off the field. The trio,
all born April 12, also share No. 12 on their college baseball jerseys —Tom, who played for Aquinas College, Tommy at Cornerstone Universityand Robby at Oakland University. The boys grew up playing ball and hear-ing stories from their dad’s days of playing the game. Now, they are start-ing to collect their own stories, including Robby’s catch that made ESPN’sPlay of the Day, and the divine intervention that seems to have directed areluctant Tommy back to the diamond. For more on the impact baseballhas had on the Enslen family, look inside.

Arare breed of small draft horses that originated with Gypsies and tracetheir lineage to the British Isles can be found on a 17-acre ranch inVermontville Township. WillowWind Stable, owned by Kim and Mandy
Kramar, is home to Gypsy Vanner draft horses. Only 3,000 of the breed exist inthe United States. Traditionally, Gypsy Vanners hauled the caravans of Gypsies, for whom the breed’s gentle nature and strong body type made it ideal for tran-sient life. The official registry known as the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society wasestablished in 1996 of which Kim Kramar is treasurer. One-week-old colt Azurenuzzles with Mandy (top, right). Fionn, (top left) is a five-star-rated stallion, andThe Alchemist, stallion, (bottom) recently achieved champion status at theMichigan State University Stallion Expo. With their long hair, flowing manes andtails and “feathers” that meet the road, the Gypsy Vanner breed is making itselfknown in its gentle way. (For more on this rare breed, see story inside)

Appreciation of the artistry in old things is only part of thereason Al Hackett of Hastings has assembled an impressivecollection of cars and the fascinating memorabilia that goes
with them. As a retired machinist, Hackett still spends hours eachday in his shop in Hastings, fabricating parts and reconditioning theoriginal work of craftsmen who built vehicles like this prized 1919Dodge Brothers conversion truck. Thornapple Kellogg fifth grade resource teacher Cindy Middlebushspent much of her summer helping students catch the reading “bug”and want to read all summer long. For the second summer, Middlebush
spent several hours each week delivering books to students in the TK district, making sure they had plenty of good material to read. As a teacher for 30years, Middlebush said she recognizes the importance of students continuingto read throughout the summer. The idea of the mobile library came afterattending a reading conference and hearing stories of mobile library pro-grams. She decided her 974 Volkswagen “Bug” was the perfect vehicle tobecome the “Book Bug.” Now as students return to school, she hopes theirreading efforts all summer have helped prepare them for a new school year. For more about Middlebush and the “Book Bug,” see the full story inside.
