  • 2Over the weekend well have a number of our volunteers out rattling buckets. Please give us a fiver, and well sticker you up to say thank you.

Cant make it to the Festival? Dont have any loose change? You can also donate to us from your phone. Give us 5 by texting the message HTFR12 5 to 70070.We hope you enjoy this years Hat Fair. Believe it or not, this three day event takes a whole year to prepare, plan and develop. Our small team works hard to bring you an exciting, unexpected and fun-filled programme, packed full of the best street arts and artists from all around the world.

Although Hat Fair started as a hatting festival we now also have a large and diverse programme of artists who are paid to appear at the festival. We also invest a lot of money in the creation of new work so that we can continue to bring you cutting edge performances.

Most of our events are completely free, and have been for the last 38 years, but increasingly it is becoming more and more difficult to maintain the levels of funding required to stage an event of this scale.

This is where you can help. You can show your appreciation to some of the artists by throwing some money in their hats but you can also play a part in keeping Hat Fair on the streets by giving the Festival a fiver!

Were expecting 40,000 to visit Hat Fair over the weekend if only 5,000 people gave us 5 we could raise 25,000 to invest in an even more fabulous and surprising show in 2013. Play your part, and Gimme Five!

Upswing > Red ShoesRed Shoes draws from fairytales grim and glorious. The set creates a forest of poles, a place beyond the normal, where strange things occur and strange people live, the home of magic and imagination. This playful work explores themes of loss, journey and transformation using dance, Chinese pole and other circus techniques. www.upswing.org.uk

Wet Picnic > The Birthday PartyWe all feel alone at some point in our lives. But what happens if that never changes? Focusing on the themes of loneliness and memory, The Birthday Party uses Wet Picnics trademark style of clowning and buffoonery to explore moments of heartbreaking honesty to darkened humour. The Birthday Party is an exploration of one mans realisation that he is totally alone. A Hat Fair co-commission. www.wetpicnic.com

The Big Dance CommissionEmerging dance artists from the south east have joined together to work with professional choreographer Bettina Strickler (ex co-director of award winning dance theatre company Protein Dance). Watch as they invigorate the site with references to its historical and social importance, interwoven with surreal, dreamlike images and a good dose of tongue-in-cheek humour.

The Waggon BandA collective of musicians and

performers, The Waggon Band came together over a campfire for a folky jam in Hampshire. From this came a gypsy folk jamboree, playing a mixture of old and new songs, originals and covers, sea shanties and pub songs, all with a dash of theatricality. Expect the macabre, the melancholic, and plenty of footstomping and instrument swapping!

  • Hat Fair and the University of Winchesters Street Arts DegreeOver the last three years Hat Fair has consistently contributed to my degree, providing opportunities we may never have had without its presence.

The partnership with ZEPA has meant we have been able to visit other countries to learn about their culture and what street arts are like in other countries. I have been able to benefit from seminars in Amiens, perform in Arras and take part in workshops in Brest, to name a few.

All of our experiences in France have shown us how important this relationship is between countries in Europe and therefore how valuable ZEPA is. Last year ZEPA supported The Emerge festival in Eastleigh. In the festival, street arts students were able to showcase acts we had been developing as part of our Transcultural Studies module. Some of the acts even went on to be

booked for other festivals after being seen at Emerge.

Since the start of the degree we have been given opportunities to take part in Hat Fair. Opportunities have encompassed everything from volunteering to stewarding and even performing with professional companies or with our own projects.

Participation in Hat Fair has provided us with an insight into the world of professional street arts and the placement I have been doing over the last month has confirmed that the direction I wish to take is totally worth it! Hat Fair is an essential part of Street Art and having it as a central part of our degree has been key.
