As ever we have spent the last 12 months beavering away to bring you the best that the international street arts circuit has to offer. Believe it or not, this three day event takes a whole year to prepare, plan and develop. Our small team works hard to bring you an exciting, unexpected and fun-filled programme, packed full of the best street arts and artists from all around the world.

Although Hat Fair started as a hatting festival we now also have a large and diverse programme of artists who are paid to appear at the festival. We also invest a lot of money in the creation of new work so that we can continue to bring you cutting edge performances.

Most of our events are completely free, and have been for the last 38 years, but increasingly it is becoming more and more difficult to maintain the levels of funding required to stage an event of this scale.

This is where you can help. You can show your appreciation to some of the artists by throwing some money in their hats but you can also play a part in keeping Hat Fair on the streets by giving the Festival a fiver!

Were expecting 40,000 to visit Hat Fair over the weekend if only 5,000 people gave us 5 we could raise 25,000 to invest in an even more fabulous and surprising show in 2013. Play your part, and Gimme Five!

Hat Fair opens on Friday with activity in all city centre zones from 12am-5pm. The brilliant evening event Invasion, from Dutch company Close Act, will be held in the Broadway from 8.30-9.30pm.

Saturday sees a fantastic high-octane Hat Fair mix of performances in all city centre zones from 12am-6pm, with a Tea Dance running from 6-9.30pm in the Broadway. Spectacular evening entertainment Waterlitz from French company Gnrik Vapeur, will be held at King George V Playing Fields, Bar End from 9.30-10.30pm.

On Sunday a gentler mood prevails as Hat Fair moves to Orams Arbour for a relaxed family day of engaging shows from a range of wonderful performers. Events will begin at midday and run until 5pm, followed by a fabulous evening finale from fabulous Square Peg Circus, based on the story of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, at River Park from 7-8pm.

Outside The Brooks is a great place to go for your favourite hatting acts.

Inside The Brooks the all-weather space has a brilliant performance from Upswing on Fri (4pm + 7pm) and Sat (12pm + 4pm) and you can look out for Hat Fair sponsors BOSI and their Sweet Smell of Success unit inside the Brooks.

Cathedral (Outer Close & Inner Close)A Hat Fair favourite, the Cathedral Outer Close is the heart of the festival playing host to a variety of high octane shows and workshops on Fri (12pm - 5pm) and Sat (12pm - 6pm).

This year the Cathedral Inner Close will host not one but two new shows from Tumble Circus and C12/Shaun Parker.

And on your way in and out of the Cathedral Close, look out for Arts & Crafts + Fairtrade stalls running down from The Square.

Big Dance 2012 Great Hall/Law Courts, Sat 12-6pm

The UKs biggest outdoor dance event of 2012 comes to the Hat Fair. Managed by Hampshire Dance, Big Dance is the ultimate dance experience and you are invited to join in! Workshops in a wide selection of dance styles are available, come and try your hand at Zumba, street dance or West Coast Swing and be wowed by outdoor performances, free-running demos and dance theatre displays. There is something for everyone and the whole familyif you want to dance, want to watch dance or even once danced at Uncle Johns wedding COME AND GET INVOLVED!

Hatting After 38 years the tradition of Hatting is alive and well at Hat Fair. After all its how we got our name! There are 4 hatting pitches this year in the city centre where you can come and see all manner of dare devilry and shenanigans from trick cycling to hula hooping and hand balancing to musical mayhem. Please remember, these performers come to Hat Fair from all over the world for FREE and rely on your generosity to make their appearances worthwhile. The Family Picnic Orams Arbour, Sun 12-5pm On Sunday Hat Fair moves to the Arbour for a brilliant fun filled family day. Enjoy a multitude of fabulous performances, sample the delights of the food and arts and crafts stalls and see the best local talent flex their performing muscles on The Peoples Stage.

There will also be a hatting pitch on the High Street outside Natwest Bank on Sunday.

Gnrik VapeurKing George V Playing Fields > Waterlitz, Saturday, 9.30-10.30pm

Rounding off Saturday night in unforgettable style, French company Gnrik Vapeur bring their new show Waterlitz to Hat Fair. This breath-taking event centres on Omni Ideal X, a giant totem constructed from shipping containers. Close Act > Invasion Friday 8.30-9pm Dutch company Close Act kicks off 2012s Hat Fair evening entertainment with an Invasion of giant beasts from

prehistoric times. Large animals move through the audience. A mythical world comes alive. Animal voices resound. A dark figure appears, followed by prehistoric birds flying overhead and the creatures spread out on all sides, leaving people confused, unsure whether to run away or follow. The chaos is stopped by a magical song that attracts animals and calms them down! The audience stills. A unique experience. www.closeact.nl

This year Abbey Gardens will be a relaxed space to eat and chill out in. Weirs Walk Fri & Sat(between the Bishop on the Bridge & Blackboy pubs)Tilted Productions watery show, Seasaw, will find itself at home in the gardens along the river. Seasaw is inspired by the relationship between humans and water. Childhood memories of waterside holidays, thoughts on water pollution and global warming, all can be found in this entertaining and challenging trail of performance art and physical theatre vignettes.

Performances inspired by the history of Winchester, at six of the citys historical sites. Meet at Orams Arbour and walk to The Great Hall, site of the first performance.

Enjoy this brilliant mix of performances from the Chesil Youth Theatre, Kings School, Winchester University, Henry Beaufort School, Peter Symonds College and the New Era CC Arts Company - plus clowning along the way. Small Wonders at The Discovery Centre, Theatre Royal & Abbey GardensFri 6 & Sat 7 July 10.00am to 4.00pmHat Fair in association with Theatre Royal Winchester and The Discovery Centre is proud to present Small Wonders, a day of activities, entertainment and performance for pre-school children and their families. Rime is a newly devised circus show based on Samuel Taylor Coleridges epic poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, with thrilling acrobatics, song and story. Combining circus with theatre and dance, award-winning Square Peg Circus use group acrobatics and human towers, Chinese poles, ropes, flips and tricks to tell this beautiful haunting tale. Rime is co-commissioned by the National Theatre and is the companys first full-length production.

The Waggon BandA collective of musicians and

performers, The Waggon Band came together over a campfire for a folky jam in Hampshire. Hat Fair and the University of Winchesters Street Arts DegreeOver the last three years Hat Fair has consistently contributed to my degree, providing opportunities we may never have had without its presence.

The partnership with ZEPA has meant we have been able to visit other countries to learn about their culture and what street arts are like in other countries. I have been able to benefit from seminars in Amiens, perform in Arras and take part in workshops in Brest, to name a few.

All of our experiences in France have shown us how important this relationship is between countries in Europe and therefore how valuable ZEPA is. Last year ZEPA supported The Emerge festival in Eastleigh. In the festival, street arts students were able to showcase acts we had been developing as part of our Transcultural Studies module. Some of the acts even went on to be

booked for other festivals after being seen at Emerge.

Since the start of the degree we have been given opportunities to take part in Hat Fair. Opportunities have encompassed everything from volunteering to stewarding and even performing with professional companies or with our own projects.

Participation in Hat Fair has provided us with an insight into the world of professional street arts and the placement I have been doing over the last month has confirmed that the direction I wish to take is totally worth it! Hat Fair is an essential part of Street Art and having it as a central part of our degree has been key.

The ZEPA network (European Zone of Artistic Projects) aims to develop street theatre throughout the region covering Southern England (Brighton, Southampton, Norfolk and Hampshire for England) and Northern France (Pas-de-Calais, Picardie, Normandy and Brittany). Supported by the European Commissions Interreg IVA France (Channel) England programme, its objective is to share resources, skills and experiences to jointly develop cross-border activities and projects from 2008 to 2012.
