ABOUT US

initial brief set and delivered by the client and run with deadlines and parameters as set in the industry.

The aim is to provide the students with an avenue in which they may experience the professional procedures and practices of an industry-based studio by allowing them to produce industry based jobs in a studio environment.

By taking students out of the classroom scenario and allowing them to work on industry set jobs, the Studio is not only offering another avenue for students to expand and diversify their learning environment and experience, but it also ties in with learning in the workplace and community.

What this means for you is that at any time, you can come in, brief us on your job, and the students will be able to produce your work within a short timeframe at reduced rates.

Come in, meet out team, see our facilities and see how our Design Studio can be of assistance to you and your organisation as well as obtaining a no obligation free quote for your project.

HATCH STUDIO METROWEST

The Design Studio is making a significant contribution to bringing industry and community into the learning arena, primarily through activities that involve students, industry and staff and external partners in real projects.

The Design Studio at Victoria University was launched 2008 Now under Victoria Polytechnic - a fully functioning graphic design consultancy and production house that involves students and staff in the generation of design work for both internal and external clients.

The Design Studio runs weekdays, 9am – 5pm, out of MetroWest 138 Nicholson Street, Footscray. The Design Studio is run by Beata Cranswick with graphic design students and ocassional digital media and visual arts students’ involvement when projects require their skills.

A rotating roster of students assist in the everyday running of the studio which include every day duties such as quoting, invoicing, through to the creative design and finished art for all jobs. All work is developed as per the

OUR MISSION

Its all about organization, even allocations of jobs, leadership, initiative, hard work and having fun with what you are doing.

PROFILEBeata Cranswick is the Design Studio Manager. Beata is responsible for providing overall project management as well as innovative design solutions all while creating learning in the workplace and community opportunities for our Graphic Design students to develop their skills in the workforce.Beata started her career in Sydney as a freelance Graphic Desinger for Australian Consolidated Press Publications, as a finished artist and illustrating for magazines. Back in Melbourne, she has worked as a graphic designer/art director and was a Director in a Public Relations company with clients from a broad work sector. Her last 16 years has seen Beata run her own design studio in South Melbourne, working on concept design through to the final print and web product, incorporating her skill in commercial photography. Her experience covers corporate and commercial print design, corporate identity, branding, advertising, and website design with clients from commercial, retail, health and government sectors covering a variety of multi-disciplined works.

HATCH STUDIO METROWEST

The design studios objectives is to offer students an opportunity to experience the professional procedures and practices of an industry based studio by allowing them to produce industry based jobs for both internal and external clients in a design studio environment.

Graphic design students having an active input in client projects make informed choices leading to successful design outcomes.Direct contact with clients is valuable and within a studio framework students are able to relax and experience for themselves, learn how to think strategically when designing a communication response in a learning environment where students are socially aware, adaptable, and ultimately able to consider all aspects of media and communication. In 2013 our services have grown to offer website and media design. Students interact in business in a professional setting and produce tailed and functional sites. Focusing initially to the surrounding community, with small businesses and individuals clients helping to further the community around them. Sizes of projects range from entire training online websites, to educational learning DVDs.

Beata joined us in late 2011 after having taught Advanced Graphic Design Diploma students and Applied Business Music students at Boxhill Institute. With a passion for innovative design and teaching, Beata is committed to sharing her design experience and quality teaching to enhance the experience of our Graphic Design Students to develop their skills for a smooth transition into their chosen career.

STUDENT OUTCOME

Its all about organization, even allocations of jobs, leadership, initiative,

hard work and having fun with what you are doing. I’m grateful for the

experience and feel I have benefited from it in many ways.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

I believe the design studio experience was a good one that has helped

me improve my “working under pressure” attributes and communication

skills among other things. I know these skills will be pivotal in the

industry so I’m glad these attributes were somewhat amplified during

my time in the design studio.

The experience gained from the studio helped me to be¬come more

organized and committed and showed me that in tough times some

sacrifices have to be made in order to get the job done.

Overall my experience in the studio was great, I’ve had many

moments in my life where design had made a mark and this

was one of them, I felt that I really do want a career in design.

I feel that this experience is very beneficial to students, I think what I got

out of this program the most was to create work with a professional end

work, I feel from now on with all my future works I will be expecting the

quality and more which I produced in the last two weeks.

Client Survey results in best practice categories 2009-2013

Victoria University Library Annual Report 2013 5

cLienT survey resuLTsThe 10th Library Client Survey was successfully administered during August 2013. There were close to 3000 participants, mostly undergraduate domestic students who access Library facilities at Footscray Park and St Albans campuses.

The Library performed strongly across all of the 33 survey questions, including in seven of the 10 factors that are most important to students and staff. Clients’ overall level of satisfaction increased by 0.7 to 80.7%.

When the survey results were benchmarked against the other 38 academic libraries in the comparison group, the Library was ranked in the top quartile of the Service Delivery and Facilities & Equipment categories. This is a very positive result, given the challenging operating environment. The chart below illustrates that the Library’s performance in all of the best practice categories has improved since the previous survey and significant improvement has been achieved in the Facilities & Equipment category since 2009.

Also noteworthy is the increase in overall satisfaction levels in five of the seven campus libraries since the 2011 survey. This is a very positive result, even more so for the larger campus libraries which are heavily used and closely scrutinised by a large number of clients. Plans are under way to increase the number of quiet study spaces at Footscray Park and Queen Street, and options are also being developed for additional acoustic protection at sites where noise levels are excessive.

The Library appreciates the time taken by clients to complete the survey and provide thoughtful suggestions about the ways we can improve. We will continue focussing on quality improvement so that we can constantly deliver a high quality learning experience for our students.

Library capabiLiTy frameworKRefreshing staff capabilities is an objective of the Library strategic plan. To support this, a Library Capability Framework that identifies the core capabilities required of Library staff at different HEW levels was developed. The framework was developed by Jenny Fafeita, Quality Improvement Coordinator, in collaboration with members of the Library Senior Leadership Team, and draws on capability frameworks from other public sector organisations. The Library’s core capabilities are: customer service, communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork, professional knowledge (including IT skills) and problem solving, initiative and innovation. The framework is being used to assist with recruitment and prioritise professional development opportunities.

new e-resourcesThe following databases and journal collections were added to the Library collection during 2013:

The Library also subscribed to mobile apps that enhance the reading experience when browsing digital journals, magazines and newspapers on iPads. BrowZine provides an easy way to browse, read and monitor scholarly journals from open access journals and the Library’s subscription databases. The PressReader app enables readers to connect with digital replicas of newspapers and magazines from the Library’s PressReader subscription and download them to their iPad while within range of the University’s wi-fi network.

The Footscray Technical School, location in Nicholson Street provided

and encouraged excellent sporting facilities and opportunities for

students of the school.

All sporting activities available were managed by Mr Fred Reid, the

sports master, who excelled with this responsibility.

In 1938, three sporting teams (Football, Cricket and Baseball) won

premierships in the inter-technical schools of Melbourne competitions.

This feat was noted as a record within the competition history.

As a result, the title “Class of 38” was created. In the following year

(1939) the football and cricket teams also won premierships. Group

photographs of the teams were taken, framed and proudly displayed

in the school passageway.

Likes to drink 2011

Addiction to the consumption of alcoholic drink; alcohol dependency.

“See all they do is drink” Mary said to Jenny, to which Jenny replies, “But mummy, everyone at the pub is drinking!” Mary slaps her daughter and her daughter starts to cry.

Full-blooded 2011

Of unmixed race.

“I received an Indigenous Arts Grant to put on my last exhibition” Daniel explains to a stranger at the bar. “But you’re not Aboriginal!” the stranger replies. Later that year Daniel decides to put on a photographic exhibition that responds to the stereotypes that non-Indigenous people have about Indigenous people.
